No 23 Allen Street is a single storey house constructed in brickwork with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a fine simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is set on timber posts with an arched timber frieze. There is an offset front door with hopper and sidelights. There are two sets of three casement windows across the front facade.

HISTORY

1921 A Sudden Death. Mary Bushby, a married woman, who lived at 23 Allen-street, Fremantle, died suddenly at about 9.30 p.m. on Friday. A post-mortem examination was conducted at the Fremantle morgue on Saturday, and yesterday the District Coroner (Mr. W. A. G. Walter, R.M.) opened an inquest, which was adjourned. It is said that the deceased was subject to fits. (reference)

No. 23 (previously known as No. 57) King Street is a single storey cottage constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped corrugated iron roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and bullnosed roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts and follows the line of the building on the front elevation. A decorative frieze and vertical timber balustrades span between the timber posts.

HISTORY

1930 Christmas Eve Fatality.—An inquest was conducted at Fremantle yesterday concerning the death of Donald Sylvester Campbell (29), poultry farmer, of Melville, who was killed on Christmas Eve on the Canning-road, when the motorcycle he was riding and a Fremantle tramcar driven by a namesake, Albert William Campbell, came into collision. The deceased man was the first to give the alarm to the police on the night of the sensational shooting at Palmyra. A verdict of accidental death was returned by the Acting Coroner (Mr. G. W. Shepherd, J.P.), who stated that no blame was attachable to anyone. (reference)

No 23 May Street is a single storey building constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width bull-nosed roofed verandah. The verandah terminates at the gable bay and is supported on timber posts. The gable bay features a pair of double hung sash windows. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by single pane double hung sash windows. Walls are limestone with brick quoins. The roofscape features several rendered chimneys.

1906 St.-Paul's Church, Beaconsfield.—On Saturday next the new Anglican Church at Beaconsfield will be consecrated by the Bishop of Perth… and the conception form by that description is more than fulfilled, the architect, Mr. Eales, having carried out his work admirably. Special care has been taken with regard to colouring. The thick green glass the long and narrow Gothic window to give the subdued light so necessary in this sunny land, while at the same time the building is relieved from being gloomy or depressing by the artistic night, blue Goth ceiling… the pews, which are being constructed by Locke Bros., of Fremantle, are to be stained green. It is a source of satisfaction to the vestry and congregation that all the work connected with the building has been done locally. The contractors are Messrs. Miss Judge, who also holds the Diploma of Physical Education from the Melbourne University, has taken a prominent part in the work of National Fitness in this State. 1930 Accident Volunteer Cadet Shot. Rifle shooting practice at the Swanbourne Rifle Range had a dramatic sequel at Fremantle yesterday afternoon, when a member of the cadet volunteer forces, Thomas Robinson (16), of Glyde-street, East Fremantle. was accidentally shot in the side by a companion. The victim was hurriedly removed to the Fremantle Hospital by the St. John ambulance. It was found that the bullet had passed through his body. It was reported to the Fremantle police that Robinson was returning home from Swanbourne in company with Leonard James Nicholl (16), of, Hubble-street, East Fremantle, and Gordon McAlphine (17), of Wood-street, East Fremantle. The boys were carrying .303 military rifles, which they had used during the day at the range. While walking along Point street, Robinson found a £1 note, and as he picked it up, Nicholl took his gun from his shoulder and playfully pointed it at Robinson, demanding that he give him the money. The gun then exploded, and Robinson dropped to the ground, the bullet having entered his right side... (reference)

Federation / Interwar , Georgian Bungalow

No 23 Windsor Road is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah terminates at a gable bay on the north elevation. It is supported on turned timber posts with post brackets. A vertical timber balustrade is set between the posts. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and windows. The windows are double hung sash windows with sidelights. The roofscape features a pair of tall render capped chimneys.

1910 Some Neighborly Amenities. At East Fremantle. Man gets the worst of it. At the Fremantle Police Court this morning, before Messrs, P. J. McLaren and S. Thomson, J.P.'s, Peter Mahon was presented on a charge of having assaulted Bridget Brady on July 22 at East Fremantle. Mr. Frank G. Unmack appeared for the prosecution. Bridget Brady, a married woman, said that she lived next door to Mahon in East Fremantle. Last Friday she saw him throwing sand over her children. She tried to protect them, and then he threw stones at her. (reference)

No 23 Moss Street (Lot 36) is a single storey house constructed in tuck-pointed brick and rendered brick with a corrugated iron roof. It has historic and aesthetic value for its contribution to the Woodside area’s high concentration of predominantly Federation period houses and associated buildings.

HISTORY

1912 The funeral of the late Mrs. Theresa Hanna, wife of Mr. T. Hanna, of the Atlas Engineering Works, Fremantle, was attended by a large number of relatives and friends...The chief mourners were Mr. T. Hanna (husband), Miss L. Hanna (daughter), Messrs. Charles E., William, and Henry Hanna (sons)... Among those present were Mr. Jas. Haydon, representing the Iron Masters' Association, and several representatives of the United Ancient Order of Druids, and the whole of the employees of the Atlas Engineering Works. (reference)

1921 A Child’s Claim Fails. The case for the defence was concluded today in the action, in the Supreme Court, before Mr. Justice Burnside, in which Bridget Flanagan. a little girl of eight years, through her father, sued Henry Hanna, a manufacturing engineer. Manna's motor car knocked the child down in Bellevue terrace, Fremantle, on October 12 last, and it is claimed that permanent injuries were sustained, and that the accident was due to negligence on the part of the defendant. The defence sought to establish that the defendant was guilty of no negligence, and that the child, while playing 'hide and seek,' ran into the car. After a retirement of about an hour the jury returned a four to two majority in favor of defendant... (reference)

No 24 Alexandra Road is a single-storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with an ‘M’ format corrugated iron roof. It is an expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a gable bay and a full-width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah extends over the gable bay and is supported on steel posts. A steel balustrade spans between the posts. There is a central door flanked by windows. The verandah has been extended south and modified to fit a basement level garage. The roofscape features a rendered chimney. There are rendered quoins to the original openings. The gable has been simplified and verandah detailing lost.

No 24 Windsor Road is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. There is a substantial two storey addition to the rear. It is a very fine and unusual expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a full width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah terminates at gable bays at both ends. It is supported on timber posts. A timber balustrade spans between the posts. The gable bay extends above the verandah and features roughcast render detailing and a set of four casement windows. The entry door is located on the north elevation under the return verandah. The roofscape is a key part of the styling and features gables and tall rendered chimneys. The place sits on limestone foundations. The lower walls are face brick and upper walls are rendered.

William Alfred Murphy (1 March 1858 – 11 October 1929) was an English-born Australian politician. Murphy moved to Fremantle in Western Australia around the time of the conclusion of his New South Wales parliamentary term. He worked for the Customs Department for eight years before going into business as a customs agent. He was Mayor of Fremantle from 1907 to 1909, and was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1910 to 1911, representing the electorate of Fremantle. He spent much time assisting charitable causes at Fremantle, where he was for some time secretary of the Ugly Men's Association. When he died he lived at 94 Hampton Road, Fremantle. (reference)

Murphy, known in the “Government Gazette," as " Billy," and who will be known to posterity as Fremantle " Weak," has given up ball punching, and decorative fireworks as recreations, and taken on bowls.
