Federation, Queen Anne Bungalow w Arts & Crafts Influences

No 19 Hamilton Street - ‘Alloway’, is a single storey house constructed in brick, limestone and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style with Arts and Crafts decorative motifs. The place has been simplified with later alterations. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gabled thrust bay and a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah extends across the gable bay and is supported on Tuscan columns. A wrought steel balustrade spans between the columns. The half-timbered gable bay features a pair of double hung sash windows. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by double hung sash windows. The southern part of the return verandah has been enclosed with glazed louvres. The roofscape features render capped chimneys. The original detail has to some extent been lost by rendering.

HISTORY

Captain Charles Severin Coalstad’s family came from Bunbury and lived in this house from 1918. It was said of Captain Colstead that "No finer sailorman ever used the port of Fremantle." (reference) (see Notable people)

1947 Engagement. Mr. Kim Beazley, M.H.R., the 29-year-old "baby" of the Federal Parliament, has announced his engagement to a West Australian girl. His fiancee is Miss Betty Judge, a teacher at Perth Modern School, who is also one of his constituents, being the only daughter of Mrs. V. Judge, of 23 Hamilton-street, East Fremantle, and the late Mr. T. C. H. Judge. The couple share a keen interest in educational developments. Before winning the Fremantle seat in the House of Representatives in 1945, Mr. Beazley was tutor-organiser for the Adult Education Board. Both are graduates of the University of Western Australia. Miss Judge, who also holds the Diploma of Physical Education from the Melbourne University, has taken a prominent part in the work of National Fitness in this State. She is leader of the Perth Junior Legacy girls' club. Miss Judge is the Australian title holder for the 880-yards women's championship. The marriage is planned for February. (reference)

The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a half-timbered gabled room surrounded by a wrapping hipped roof verandah. The verandah is supported on twin posts set on rendered masonry piers. The facade features a central set of casement windows. The entry door is on the north elevation under the return verandah. The roofscape features brick chimneys.

1934 Accident. The Fremantle traffic police are anxious to get in touch with the driver of a truck involved in an accident with a motor car in Canning-road, East Fremantle, on Sunday night. It is reported that the truck driver did not stop after the accident, as a result of which a woman and her child were injured. About 8 p.m. on Sunday Mrs. Ellen G. Burrows, of 28 Hamilton-street, East Fremantle, drove her car from Hamilton-street into Canning-road and was proceeding east. 1935 Death on May 2, at Albany, Charles Frederick, beloved husband of Ellen Georgina Burrowes, of ‘’Mee Dally’’, 26 Hamilton-street, East Fremantle, and loving father of Bride (Mrs. C.A. Jansson), Laurence, Bernard, Brian and Gabrielle; and grandfather of Marjorie, Stella and Veronica Burrowes, and Paul Jansson; aged 64 years. (reference)

1935 The funeral of the late Mr. Charles Frederick Burrowes, proprietor of the Caxton Press, Perth and Fremantle, and of ‘’Meg Dally’’, 26 Hamilton-street,East Fremantle, took place on Saturday morning. The cortege proceeded to the Fremantle Cemetery...Mr. Burrowes, who was born at Ennis, County Clare, Ireland, came to this State in 1910, and had been engaged in the printing business ever since. He was manager of the Fremantle Printery for 10 years, and then commenced business on his own account. He founded the Caxton Press in Fremantle, and later opened a branch in Perth. Friendly society affairs occupied his keen' attention, and he had been a member of the Star of the Sea Branch H.A.C.B.S., and the Brian Boru Branch of the I.N.F. for many years. Mr. Burrowes was keenly interested in trotting, and was a foundation member of the Fremantle Trotting Club. He was of particularly bright and jovial disposition, popular and highly respected. The chief mourners were Mrs. Burrowes (widow), Mrs. C. Jansson and Miss Gabrielle Burrowes (daughters), Messrs. Laurie, Bernard and Brian Burrowes (sons), and Mesdames L. and B. Burrowes (daughters-in-law). The pallbearers were Messrs. W. Christie (president of the Master Printers' Association), Aidan Bryan (president of the Fremantle Business Men's Association). J. M. Farrell (secretary of the Fremantle Trotting Club). F. G. Saunders (secretary of the Printing Industry Employees' Union), J. Dwyer (general secretary, I.N.F.), A. W. Collins (Brian Boru Branch. I.N.F. ), J. W. O'Brien (secretary, Star of the Sea, H.A.C.B.S.), and Bert Wade (Fremantle Printery). Members of the H.A.C.B.S. preceded the cortege from the cemetery gates to the graveside. 1935 Fremantle Printer’s Death. The late Mr. Charles Frederick Burrowes, who died yesterday at Albany, was the founder of the Caxton Press,with branches at Perth and Fremantle. Born in Ennis, Ireland, 64 years ago, he came to Western Australia in 1910, and served for some years wita printing establishments at Fremantle. Later he founded his own business at Fremantle, and subsequently extended his activities to Perth. For a number of years past he has resided at 26 Hamilton-street, Fremantle. He was a member of the Irish National Foresters (Brian Boru branch) and of the Printing Industry Employees' Union. (reference)

1919 From The Mother Of A Little Patient Who Died Recently, Dear Aunt Mary, I have been wanting to write an appreciation of the Silver Chain and Nurse Talbot for some time. "No one-save a mother in like circumstances-imagine what a boom the services and advice of a trained nurse are in a lengthy and trying illness. Nurse Talbot has been to me daily for nearly nine months, to attend my only little boy, who is incurably ill, and her visits have been eagerly looked for by us both. It has been such a comfort to me, as it enables me to keep him at home, where otherwise he would have had a long weary spell in hospital. I think the Silver Chain is very fortunate in procuring the services of such grand woman as Nurse Talbot has proved herself to my family… (reference)

1920 C.B. Old Boys' Association. For the purpose of resuscitating the Christian Brothers' Old Boys' Association, a smoke social was held in St. Patrick's Hall on last Wednesday evening. There was an encouragingly large attendance of young men present, who enjoyed themselves thoroughly. The gathering was presided over by Mr. Hoey, who was supported by the Rev. In the 1930s the place underwent major alterations. Since then the place has been restored to reflect the original Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return bullnose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on chamfered timber posts with post brackets. The verandah is a replacement. The walls are limestone and all quoins are brick. There is a central door flanked by sidelights, a double hung sash window and a bay window. The bay window extends above the verandah and features double hung sash windows. The roofscape features a pair of render capped chimneys.

No 30 Hamilton Street is a single storey house constructed in painted brick with a ‘M’ format and gable corrugated iron roof. It is an expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The house was built in two stages. The front two rooms were initially constructed followed by two rooms to the rear. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a pair of thrust gable bays and a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah extends over the gable bays and is supported on timber posts. The verandah is a replacement. The half-timbered gable bays feature pairs of double hung sash windows. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights.

The gable features a set of casement windows. There is a central door flanked by a set of casement windows. Render has obscured the finer details.

HISTORY

1907 The quarterly meeting of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society was held on Wednesday evening, the 3rd inst., at the Rechabite Hall, Fremantle, when there were a large number of members present. The balance-sheet, quarterly reports, and auditors' reports were read and adopted… A female branch has been formed, this being the first Lodge of the Order to organise a female branch in Western Australia, and the departure, it was stated, gives every indication of being a great success. 1941 Eight year old Ronald Boyle, of 31 Hamilton street, East Fremantle, was saved from drowning by a woman near Fremantle traffic bridge today. The woman slipped quietly away afterwards before anyone could find out her name. She had gone to the boy's assistance in a boat. Mrs. Winifred Hamilton, of Attfield street, South Fremantle, told the police that about 2.30 p.m., while travelling across Fremantle traffic bridge in a motor car with her husband, she saw a woman trying to drag Boyle into the boat. The woman told her that the boy had fallen from a pile into the water and she had taken a boat out to rescue him. Mrs. Hamilton said that the woman appeared to be exhausted and left without giving her name. Boyle was taken by Mrs. Hamilton to the Fremantle Hospital, where he was detained for treatment, suffering from shock and effects of immersion. After recovering in hospital Boyle told the police that he was walking across the bridge with a boy who accidentally pushed him, with the result that he fell into the water. (reference)

1946 Three dwelling houses were entered and ransacked at East Fremantle on Friday night between 7 and 11 o'clock. They were those of John Brown of 93 Marmion-street, where a fountain pen, cigarettes and a pocket knife were stolen: John Coxon, of 101 Marmion-street, where £11 was stolen; and John William Taylor, of 31 Hamilton-street where £8 and 10oz. of tobacco were stolen. The homes of Coxon and Taylor were both entered through unlocked windows, but entrance to Brown's premises was gained by breaking the glass above the latch on a window and unlocking the latch... The place is largely obscured by later additions. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with gabled roofs and a part width flat roofed verandah to one side. The entry door is obscured by a garage. The garage is a later addition. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.

1933 By the unanimous request of the members of the East Fremantle Council, Cr. John Munro nominated for the position of Mayor, rendered vacant through the death of Mr. J. F. Allen,and was elected, unopposed. Mr. Munro has represented the East Ward of the district on the council continuously for the past seven years, and has latterly filled the office of town treasurer. His association with East Fremantle extends back over 20 years, and he has been actively associated with practically every social welfare movement in the district. At present he holds the well as the president of the East Fremantle Unemployed Relief Committee. The sport of tennis has claimed his interest, and he is one of the foundation members and a life member, as well as the president of the East Fremantle Tennis Club. He is an elder of the Presbyterian Church, a director of the Fremantle branch of the British Sailors' Society, an organisation which tends to the social welfare of seamen while in port, and a member of the committee of the Shiplovers' Society. The election of Mr. Munro is well merited, and he has many well-wishers for a successful term of office. (reference)

The retiring Mayor of East Fremantle (Mr. John Munro) was entertained by the councillors in the East Fremantle Council Chambers last Friday night to afford them an opportunity of expressing their appreciation of his services to the municipality, and to make a presentation...Mr. Munro expressed regret that pressure of business forced him to relinquish office, and he praised the work of the councillors, the Town Clerk (Mr. H. HISTORY

1941 Death on April 24 at Fremantle Hospital, Mr. Henry Lee Knapp, of 34 Hamilton-street, East Fremantle, passed away after a brief illness. His demise came as a shock to his many friends and associates. The funeral took place on Saturday last at the Crematorium, Karrakatta, where an Anglican service was conducted by the Rev. Canon E. M. Collick, in the presence of a large and representative gathering. The late Mr. Knapp was born in Maryborough (Victoria), and came to this State 41 years ago. A painter by trade, he was employed by the Fremantle Tramway Board and was associated with them for 36 years. In private life he was connected with almost any organisation formed for the benefit of the public in general his principal activities being: Member of Fremantle Hospital Board, treasurer of the Fremantle United Friendly Societies Council. Past Grand Master of the I.O.O.F., life member of the Rebecca Lodge I.O.O.F., and a member of the R.A.O.B., where at the time of his last illness he was occupying the chair in Fremantle Lodge Orient No. 2, G.C.A. Mr. Knapp was of a cheerful disposition and was honoured and respected by all who knew him and was always willing to give advice or assistance in any charitable work in progress... He leaves a widow and three sons to mourn their loss. (reference)

It is a very fine expression of the Federation Filigree style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return bullnose verandah. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts with fretwork friezes. A timber balustrade spans between the posts. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and bay windows. The bay windows extend above the verandah line and feature pairs of double hung sash windows. The half-timbered gables sit above the bay windows. The roofscape features tall chimneys with rendered chimney caps. There are additions to the rear of the house.

The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with fretwork friezes. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. The thrust bay features casement windows, sunhood and a jetted gable with timber fretwork. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and casement windows. The roofscape features rendered chimneys and dragon finials and cresting. The walls are brick with render string courses and there are dressings under windows.

The walls are limestone and all quoins are brick. The roofscape features tall chimneys with rendered caps.

No 38 Hamilton Street “Wonga Burra” is a single-storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Queen Anne style. The place has been somewhat altered. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full-width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts that rest on piers. Part of the verandah to the north has been enclosed. A diagonal gable bay faces the street corner. The bay features double hung sash windows. The front door is located on Fletcher Street under the return verandah. The door has a hopper and sidelights. The Fletcher Street facade features single pane double hung sashes. There are three gables along Fletcher Street. The roofscape features tall rendered chimneys.
