ARCHITECTURE

Federation Villa w Queen Anne / Gothic Influences

No 23 May Street is a single storey building constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width bull-nosed roofed verandah. The verandah terminates at the gable bay and is supported on timber posts. The gable bay features a pair of double hung sash windows. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by single pane double hung sash windows. Walls are limestone with brick quoins. The roofscape features several rendered chimneys.

HISTORY

1906 St.-Paul's Church, Beaconsfield.—On Saturday next the new Anglican Church at Beaconsfield will be consecrated by the Bishop of Perth… and the conception form by that description is more than fulfilled, the architect, Mr. Eales, having carried out his work admirably. Special care has been taken with regard to colouring. The thick green glass the long and narrow Gothic window to give the subdued light so necessary in this sunny land, while at the same time the building is relieved from being gloomy or depressing by the artistic night, blue Goth ceiling… the pews, which are being constructed by Locke Bros., of Fremantle, are to be stained green. It is a source of satisfaction to the vestry and congregation that all the work connected with the building has been done locally. The contractors are Messrs. Hooley Bros., whose work has given entire satisfaction. His Excellency the Governor has signified his intention of attending the consecration service… (reference)

1906  Public are warned against negotiating… cheque in favour of Mrs. Hooley for  £10, the same having been lost on October 10. (reference)

1907 At the request of Mr. Mahon, the Postmaster-General recently invited tenders for the removal and re-erection of the post office at Derby to a more suitable site. He has now informed Mr. Mahon that the tender of Hooley Bros. has been accepted for the work, and that the date fixed for its completion is August 27 next. (reference)
