Simple Federation Bungalow

No. 18 (previously was no. 32) Silas street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a good expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The place is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width skillion roof verandah, supported on turned timber posts. A small gable has been added to the verandah. A render band runs across the front facade at sill level.

HISTORY

1939 Fremantle is to have another musical festival this year. The announcement was made on Saturday night when the Fremantle Musical and Dramatic Club held its opening meeting for the year in the Wesley Hall, Cantonment-street. The club held a small festival last year, the first ever held in Fremantle Cultural music in the State owes much to the splendid foundations laid in Fremantle in the early days, and Saturday night's music reflected a high standard. The evening was the first of the evenings for the year. They will be held on the first Saturday of each month...The programme was contributed by artists from Perth as well as Fremantle. Late Federation / Early Inter-War Bungalow Porch House with Arts & Crafts Influences

No. 26 (previously was no. 44) Silas street was a residential dwelling from earlier than 1910. In 1949 the original dwelling that stood on this site was demolished and the construction of a new residence was completed in 1953. It is a single storey house constructed in brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a good expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The place is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and part width hipped roof verandah. The gable bay features a set of three casement windows under a sunhood. The verandah is supported on part rendered brick piers. A brick balustrade runs between piers.

HISTORY

1928 Accident. Mr. F. R. Peterson Not Blamed. On February 6, Mr. F. R. Peterson, the well-known Fremantle photographer, was unfortunate enough to collide with a child, Norman Gore, eight years of age. As a result of the collision the child died, and the inquest was held on Tuesday last by Mr. H. J. Craig, R.M., who delivered the-following verdict: "That Norman Gore came to his death at Fremantle on February from injuries caused in a collision with a motor car driven by Frank Reinhold Peterson; in Canning Road, East Fremantle, on the same date. That the injuries were caused accidentally." Evidence disclosed at the inquest indicated that the accident was not the fault of Mr. Peterson, who did everything possible to avert the collision. 1940 Arrest. Two men were arrested by Detective Sergeant Flanagan and Detective Woodcock on Saturday afternoon and charged with having raped a girl at Canning Bridge on Thursday. They were James Allen Hunter (23), married, naturalist, of Moss-street, East Fremantle, and George William Casley (35), married, machinist, of Silas-street, East Fremantle. They were allowed bail. 1940 Accident. Sixteen-year-old Sydney Empson, of Curedale-street, Beaconsfield, fractured his right leg when a bicycle he was riding collided with a motor car early today. The accident occurred at the intersection of Lefroy and Hampton roads, Beaconsfield, about 7.40 a.m. Mervyn Neil (27), of Burt-street, Fremantle, who was a passenger in the car, received a laceration over the right eye. He was discharged after treatment at Fremantle Hospital. The driver of the car was G. Casley of Silas-street, East Fremantle. (reference)

No. 30 (previously was no. 50) Silas street is a single storey house constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped corrugated iron roof. The place is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by sidelights and sets of three casement windows. The facade features a full width broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported square timber posts with a decorative frieze. There is a gablet over the verandah entry.

It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The place is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features full width skillion roofed verandah supported steel posts. The verandah is a replacement.

1927 Suggestion For Settlers(To The Editor.) Sir, The extreme heat takes my thoughts to the wives and babies of group settlers, whose shacks have iron roofs.
