HISTORY

1929 Fremantle District Council A.L.P. There was a good attendance of delegates at the fortnightly meeting of the Fremantle District Council of the A.L.P., held at the Trades Hall on Tuesday evening. The President (Mr. A. V. Hughes) occupied the chair, and Mr. Frank Rowe, M.L.A., officiated as secretary in the absence of Mr. J. W. Burgess, who is on holiday leave. (reference)

1929 Municipal Elections. Wednesday was nomination day for the annual municipal elections throughout the State. For East Fremantle there will be no elections. Messrs. Frank Rowe. M. L. A. and Mr. A. Staton, endorsed Labor candidates were returned unopposed for the Central and West Wards respectively, and Mr. George Pearse was given a walk-over for the East Ward, which is the aristocratic portion of the municipality. 1930 Political Points. Howls From the Hustings and Campaign Personalities Hubert Parker and Frank Rowe are making a merry mill of it in North East Fremantle. This in the old days was a Labor pocket borough, but portion of the Cottesloe beach end has been tacked on to it and it's not quite the same proposition now. (reference)

1930 Campaign Notes. Mr. Frank Rowe, M.L.A., Labour candidate for North-East Fremantle, assisted by the Minister for Works (Mr. A. McCallum) and Mr. W. H. Kitson, will open his campaign at the North Fremantle Town Hall to-night at 8 o'clock. (reference)

1930 Political Personalities. Mr. Frank Rowe.—Although he may lay claim to only about three years of Parliamentary life, Mr. Frank Rowe, who is again the Labor candidate for North-East Fremantle is probably as widely-known an industrialist as any in the metropolitan area. Frank, as he is to everybody except in the august precincts of Parliament, where convention and Parliamentary usage demand that he be "the honorable member for North-East Fremantle"- is known to all ranks in the three Fremantles and also in shipping and waterfront circles throughout Australia as a sturdy champion of the workers. For 25 years without a break: 1902 to 1927-he was secretary to the Fremantle branch of the Waterside Workers' Federation but his connection with that office began many years before the federation came into existence… (reference)

1930 Labor Advertising. On April 12th. Vote Labor As Follows. Rowe For N.E. Fremantle. Mr. Frank Rowe was for over twenty years General Secretary of the Waterside Workers' Union, and was prominent in every activity which resulted in improvements to their wages and conditions in life. Largely due to his efforts is the fact that Fremantle has an up-to-date Ambulance Service. His past record and his experience in industrial affairs are such as to make his services of great value to the community in a Parliamentary capacity. (reference)

1930 The Election Campaign. North-East Fremantle. Down Fremantle way, Mr. Frank Rowe, in his campaign, will be the centre of interest, as he is the only Fremantle member who is being opposed, and therefore the full strength of the opposition's guns will be played on him, and will bring the entire movement of Fremantle women and men into the fullest active service in order that he may retain his seat. Labor in Fremantle can surely prove that when its stronghold is challenged, only one thing can happen, i.e., a stronger hold than ever. Fremantle Labor women can safely be trusted to make things hum in the North-East Fremantle electoral district. (reference)

1930 Fremantle News and Views. Labor Defeat At North East Fremantle.—Mr. Frank Howe's defeat by the narrow margin of 13 votes in a poll of 5095 caused consternation at the North Fremantle Town Hall, the chief polling place, on Saturday night, where a large body of Laborites waited patiently until nearly midnight for the final result. The North Fremantle box was counted first. This gave the Labor candidate a lead of 639 votes, which was never overtaken until the conclusion of the count, when the postal votes were counted…(continues) (reference)

1930 Shadows: Do They Cast Refection?  Interesting Telephone Book Entry. Do coming events cast their shadows before? Here is an interesting entry in the telephone book, which was issued this month, November 1930, by the Post and Telegraph Department:—"ROWE, Frank, secretary F. L. Union, 10 Irwin-street, East Fremantle, FM-2907." And during the past month or so Mr. Frank Rowe has been working on the wharf as a lumper. A previous entry in the same telephone book announces:— "FOX, T., secretary Lumpers' Union, 239 Marmion-street, Fremantle, FM-2750." So it will be seen that the position with regard to the secretaryship of the Fremantle Lumpers' Union is hazy—that is if one were led by the telephone book. Is it casting a shadow? Is Mr. Frank Rowe toiling as a lumper to fit him for nomination for the position that the Post and Telegraph department has already conferred upon him? Time- and the lumpers themselves - will only tell. (reference)

1938 The Late CR. George David. The hearse was preceded from the cemetery gates to the graveside by drivers, fare collectors and other employees of the various omnibus companies in uniform. The coffin, over which rested the Union Jack, was borne to the grave by Inspectors W. Kennedy and R. Walker, and Messrs. C. Richards, T. Williams and H. D. Pearcy (foremen) and Clem Spry (drivers), of the Metropolitan Omnibus Company. At the conclusion of the service at the graveside the last post and reveille were sounded by Bugler Beasy, of the Royal Australian Artillery, Fremantle, and a poppy was dropped by a representative of the Returned Soldiers' League, with the words, "Lest we forget." He was particularly well known for his fostering of junior football and the club owes no small part of its success to his enthusiastic scouring of the Fremantle districts for prospective players. He gave the Brown Medal for the "best and fairest" player in the Fremantle Ex-scholars' Association. He… was a keen supporter of junior tennis. At a meeting of the WA. HISTORY

1933 Not Quite A Don Bradman - A man who is very proficient in his own art—S.P. bookmaking—is Fred McKenzie, side-kick of Joe Vick. And Fred thought it was just as easy to excel in one art as in another, and so it came about that he begged, and was given, a place in the Bookies' cricket team, which played, and beat by seven runs, George Booth's Drivers' team… Yes, Fred looked the part - and one could quite believe his confreres who said it cost a "pony" to fit him out. Then Fred endeavoured to show his prowess as a cricketer. He certainly did know which way to hold the bat — but to hit it was another matter. And as a bowler - well, he was a corker. He kept running into and knocking down the wicket—at the wrong end! As a fieldsman he was even worse. "Ye gods," said the books, "this time we did back the wrong horse. He's the best worst who ever appeared a cricket field." (reference)

1946 Street Betting - Another Gaol Sentence -'I am not going to go back on my word from this bench- If I say a thing I mean it,' said Mr. F. M. Read, S.M., in the Fremantle Police Court, when sentencing Frederic James McKenzie (37), clerk, of Irwin street, East Fremantle, to 14 days' imprisonment for having obstructed the free passage of traffic in Bannister street, Fremantle, on July 13. Mr. Read recalled that he warned McKenzie on a previous occasion that he would be liable to imprisonment should he appear again on a charge of obstruction… McKenzie, who pleaded not guilty. Plainclothes Constable Griffiths said that he saw the accused standing, with two other men, on a footpath in Bannister street. One man handed a slip of paper to McKenzie, who put it into his pocket and walked away towards Market street. About 10 persons were in the street at the time. The accused was causing obstruction to pedestrian traffic. Betting tickets, racing programmes and £83 6/9 in cash were found on him when he was arrested. Mr. Slattery said that his client had made only one transaction in the street and was not making a business site of the place. At the conclusion of the transaction he walked away and traffic had not been sensibly impeded… (reference)

1946- SP Appeal Fails - Gabled for 14 days on a traffic obstruction charge on July 22 last, Frederic James McKenzie (37) of Irwin Street, East Fremantle, in the Criminal Court today unsuccessfully appealed against his conviction and sentence… Evidence was given that he was seen standing in Bannister Street for about half a minute, was seen to accept a bet, and had betting slips in his possession when arrested… (reference)

1938 Obituary. John Edward Styants. The death occurred at the Merredin Hospital on Saturday morning last of Police-Sergeant J. E. Styants after a short illness in that institution. The deceased, who was only 50 years of age, had been a sufferer for some considerable time, and after having been stationed at Bunbury for some 20 years, was transferred to Merredin about twelve months ago, in the hope that the drier climate would restore him to good health. This was not to be however, as during the past few months he gradually became worse, and a stroke which he received about a fortnight ago eventually proved fatal. As a police officer, he was highly thought of by his superior officers, and carried out what he considered to be his duty without fear or favour. In his younger days he was a keen axeman and athlete when he was engaged in the timber industry, being an expert feller… Those at the graveside included representatives from the Masonic Lodge, Druids Lodge and- the Police Department. The deceased leaves.a widow and three sons, one of whom is, a constable at Geraldton. His brother is a member of the Legislative Assembly, representing Kalgoorlie... (reference)

Hamilton, Albert Wyndham Walker pleaded not guilty to a charge of having permitted a vehicle, used to transport food, to be used for the transport of offensive matter. Health Inspector Dow prosecuted and Mr. L. A. Coleman appeared for the defendant. The evidence for the prosecution was that, on May 22, a lorry bearing the name of Walker and Holmes, Ltd., loaded a number of live sheep at the West Australian Meat Works, at Robb's Jetty, and later picked up some ice from the freezing chamber. The sheep, which were alleged to be in an offensive condition were loaded in with the ice. Mr. Coleman submitted that the charge had not been proved as ice was not a food as defined by the Health Act, and the prosecution had not proved that the defendant was actually connected with the firm of Walker and Holmes, Ltd. The contract provides for the supply of the first quality beef, mutton, lamb, pork and veal. Some 2,000 men will be provided for. A feature of these contracts is the insistence upon only the best meat being supplied, three officers being specially appointed to supervise the matter and submit the supplies to a very careful examination. The firm of Walker and Holmes have no fears in this direction, however, it being their policy to supply only the best. It is gratifying to know of the part played by a local firm in this direction, the order having been secured in the face of keen competition from other butchers. (reference)

HISTORY

1917 Wife Desertion. Husband Elopes With Niece. A case of more than ordinary interest, particularly to the older residents of Fremantle, was brought before the Fremantle Police Court yesterday. The complainant was Mrs. Hannah Thomas, who proceeded against her husband, Theodore Thomas, for desertion and asked that an order for separation, maintenance, and costs should be made against him. Mr. F. G. Unmack, who appeared for the complainant, told the Court how Thomas had associated himself with a young girl named Miguel and with her had left his home and proceeded by train to Port Augusta, where he was arrested. Mr. C. A. Mayhall appeared for the defendant and opposed the application.

The complainant stated that she was married at Fremantle in 1899 to the defendant with whom she lived happily at Rockingham until her niece, Bertha Miguel attracted her husband and caused a break between them… The first trouble over the girl Miguel occurred in Easter, 1916, when witness reproached her husband for his conduct. He then denied that there was anything between him and the girl. On three occasions when she reproached him Thomas caught her by the throat and on another occasion he slapped her face… On Sunday October 14, she drove to Hamilton Hill with her husband and on the way he told her that he had settled up things and that she could get along on her own as best she could. She asked where he was going, and he replied that he did not know but that he would never return to her. He promised to write to her, but had not done so, and she did not see him again until he returned in custody. She claimed maintenance of £3 a week… Having heard that her husband and the girl Miguel had lived together as man and wife she had determined never to be reconciled to him.

Constable Gregson said that on the previous evening he served a witness summons on Bertha Miguel at No. 26 Irwin street at about 10 o'clock. She was in the front bedroom with the defendant Thomas and both were attired in their night clothes. Joseph De San Miguel told the Court of an interview which he had with Thomas and his sister Bertha, in which the defendant said that he was going to get a divorce and marry the girl. His sister was 18 years old when she left with Thomas. Bertha Miguel, sworn, said that she went away with the defendant Thomas on October 15, arrangements having been made three weeks previously. They intended to go to Sydney for a trip and travelled as "Mr. and Mrs. Wilson" by the trans-Australian railway. They stayed at the Metro Hotel, Coolgardie under that name. Thomas told her that he intended to be divorced from his wife and would marry her. The statement of Constable Gregson regarding the previous evening was correct. She had been given £200 by Thomas and a fair amount of jewelery… Mr. Unmack asked the Bench to make an order for the maximum amount and this course was adopted, the order of the Court being judicial separation with maintenance of £2 10s. per week, and costs amounting to £6 13s.
