ARCHITECTURE

No 14 Bedford Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War California Bungalow style. The front elevation was symmetrically planned with a central gabled roof porch and sweeping barges set on masonry piers. An addition has been added to the west making the elevation asymmetrical. There is a central door flanked by casement windows. The windows are protected by tiled sunhoods. A garage has been built to the boundary on the west elevation. The roofscape features finials.

HISTORY

Research on the history of this property is currently under way by the Museum of Perth in partnership with the Town of East Fremantle.

There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights. A concrete stair spans from the verandah to the garden.

The verandah has been partially enclosed with weatherboard cladding. The verandah is set on timber posts with a simple frieze. It has a central door and hopper light flanked by a double hung sash window. The gable bay features a set of three casement windows under a sunhood. The roofscape features three render capped chimneys.

1950 Super Truck Overturns. Phillip Ernest Cockroft of 21 Bedford Street, East Fremantle, driver of a semi-trailer unit loaded with superphosphate was lucky to escape injury when his vehicle overturned after failing to negotiate a bend on Brookton-Aldersyde Road, just before 10 o’clock on February 10. Cockroft, who was travelling alone, failed to notice the bend, which was approximately one mile from town, as he approached and consequently had to suddenly swing his vehicle to follow the road. The semi-trailer portion slid in loose sand on the outside of the bend, swinging the vehicle from the road formation and causing it to overturn, the vehicle was fairly extensively damaged, although Cockroft was not even scratched and was able to walk to town for assistance. It is an expression of the Federation Bungalow style that has been modified. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width, return hip roofed verandah. The verandah has been partially enclosed in rendered brick. It terminates at the gable bay and is set on steel posts. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a double hung sash window. The gable bay features a pair of double hung sash windows.

1941 Consolation Prize of 2/6 to Mrs. Deary, 35 Bedford St., East Fremantle, W.A. Cauliflower Souffle with Bacon. One cauliflower, salt, paprika, thin slices bacon, 1 tablespoon butter, 1 tablespoon flour, 4 tablespoons grated celery, 3 eggs, salt and pepper. Put alternate layers of lightly cooked cauliflower and bacon into a well-buttered baking-dish and cover with a souffle mixture made as follows: Melt butter in saucepan, add flour, mix well, then add 1½ cups milk. Stir till it boils, simmer 4 minutes and add 3 egg-yolks and grated cheese, salt and pepper to taste. Mix well, then fold in stiffly-beaten whites of 3 eggs and pour over cauliflower in dish. Bake in moderate oven 30 minutes (do not open the door until mixture is ready to come out). Serve immediately. (reference)

1925 Assaulting a Chinaman. John Francis Winzar pleaded not guilty to a charge of having assaulted Ah Tin on board the s.s. Gorgon, at Fremantle. on March 17. Mr. P. W. Martin appeared for the complainant, and Mr. F. G. Unmack for the defendant It was stated for the defence that the defendant, who was second engineer on the Gorgon, found the complainant smoking on board the vessel, which was loaded with oil, smoking being prohibited on this account. The defendant interfered, and a scuffle ensued, in which the complainant fell and sustained certain injuries. Defendant was fined £1, with costs. (reference)

1951 Left 50£; Son to challenge will? An only son, whose mother left him £50 from her £11,996 estate said he may challenge her will. The son is John Francis Winzar, 53, a machinery inspector, Mr. Winzar said he and his mother, Mrs. Ethel Gertrude Mary Winzar, had been estranged. "In the last months of mother's life we were reconciled and became the best of friends," said Mr. Winzar. "Friends have told me she in-tended altering her will. "She died from a heart attack before she could do so." Mrs. Winzar left her only daughter, who lives in England, a life interest of £7000. Mrs. Winzar directed that the money be paid to three English lifeboat services on the death of her daughter or her daughter's children.
