1938 Few Clues To Help. When Nils Albin, of 43 Windsor-street East Fremantle, deckhand on the tug Uco, returned to his parked car at Victoria Quay Fremantle, late yesterday afternoon, he found a two months old baby boy and two parcels on the front seat. One parcel contained a woman's clothing and the other the baby's garments. The baby was alive and quite well. 2021- Bruce Abbott- My wife Bridget have been the residents since 1st February, 1969, when we were married, although we rented there until September 1969 when we purchased the property. We have been here for about fifty three years, making us the longest term owners by a long shot. We raised two sons here, who are now forty three years and forty one years of age.

I have a copy of a Newspaper advertisement from 1932 for the sale of the property which included a description of the house and stated that it was one half acre of land with a frontage to Gill street. This suggests that the house was built around that time. The house is setback about fifteen meters from the Windsor Road frontage, suggesting that the land, all half acre, was intact and had not been subdivided at that time.
The newspaper advertisement had hand written above the photocopy of the advertisement “September 1932, I purchased this house” however there was no name attached.

I also have a photocopy of the title deed after the land had been subdivided and when title was granted to the Hines family on September 1956. Furthermore I also have a statement of account from a real estate agent, indicating that the rear half of the property was sold in November 1956. Jame Hines was the vendor.

1964-Edwin Hines died and his wife Eva became the owner

1965- bought by joint tenants, Elsie Morrison and Eva Chalmers. Elsie Morrison lived next door at No 24 Windsor Road, until about 2009. I think that Eva Chalmers was the mother of Elsie Morrison.

1966 the property was transferred to John Adams, a waterside worker.

1967-Sept 1969 the property was sold to Brian and Theresa Beresford. Brian Beresford was a shearer and was forced to sell after he sustained a farming injury that prevented him from working as a shearer.

Sept 1969- Bruce and Bridget Abbott ( still resident in 2021) paid $14,000 for the property. They are still living in the house- July 2021.

No 26 Fraser Street is a single storey house constructed in steel framing, timber cladding and fibrous cement cladding with a low pitched roof and an undercroft. It is a fine expression of the Post-World War II International modern style. It is asymmetrically composed with a ‘L’ shaped plan. The eastern wing of the house is set parallel to the lot boundary with the western wing set at a slight angle to it. A skillion roofed verandah spans the internal elevations of the 'L' shape. The verandah features a steel balustrade and is supported on steel columns. A steel framed stair case leads from the undercroft to the verandah.

Boris Frank Zuvela, a draftsman in the Public Works department designed the house in 1957 and lived there until his death in 2005.

Boris Frank Zuvela was born in Fremantle 20.6.1930. His father Antun Zuvela (1896-1968) was born in Vela Luka, Korcula, Croatia and came to WA in the 1920s where he married Franica Vlasic (1907- 1998) in 1926 in Fremantle. His father later lived at 56 Preston Point Road from 1958-1968 with his brother Maxim (b 1940-also an architect, who worked alongside Brian Klopper in the Public Works Dept in 1962) and his wife Francis from 1958-1968.

Boris also had an older brother- Antonio/Anthony Zuvela (1927-2015) who was a teacher. He started at Beaconsfield Primary School in 1946 and was deputy headmaster at Willagee Primary school from 1955 and principal there from 1978-1980.

Boris gained a Architectural diploma from Perth Technical College and began working as a draftsman in April 1954. He married Eileen Patricia ‘Pat’ Chinnery in 1955. She was also a teacher. Eileen Chinnery was a teacher at Armadale Junior High school in 1954. When married -she worked as a teacher at Hilton Park, 1955, Willagee Primary school, 1956-1957, East Hamilton Hill Primary school, 1971-1973 and South Terrace Primary school 1975- 1980.

Boris and Pat had three daughters (Lindi (1959-2019 dec) and two sons.

Boris died of pancreatic cancer 15 October 2005, in East Fremantle, aged 75 and is memorialised at Fremantle Cemetery.

Paul Zuvela: “Some time ago I started a timeline of my life which includes many Fraser Street entries and I often revisit and am always astonished and proud at what we as a family did in the time available. Dad was a remarkable man as were his two brothers and sister in their own rights. I often state how lucky I was to be brought up in such a wonderful era.

The attached photo shows the original house (1955) that dad built completely by hand and before we added the North-East extension in 1972. 1955 was the year my eldest sister Fran (Pesich) was born.

Easton house can be seen situated behind and my understanding was the land was all part originally part of the Easton estate.

The staircase ran up the facing limestone wall to the entry shown and was moved to its current location when the extension was built. There is a significant amount of limestone work on the property which was hand carved out of the block and constructed with his stonemason father Anton’s help. Originally it was a 3 bed, 1 bath, 1 toilet with the extensions making it 6 bed, 1 bath, 1 toilet. Mum had what was originally bed 2 converted to a 2nd bath/en suite after dads passing.

While the house was always a standout in the street it must be remembered it was amateur built and was fully clad in asbestos fibre sheeting (it had its fair share of problems). Dad was a strong supporter of asbestos and we to this day still have the asbestos legacy in another house we built as a family in 1974 (Lancelin 1 of 2).

I often wonder how much dad was influenced/guided by the architectural division at PWD where he worked as Fraser Street was in stark contrast to everything that followed.

Dad was not a talker but a doer, an extremely practical man that despised waste at all levels and also at odds with the perception that government bodies attract in general. While dad was always quietly proud of his achievements it was his family he was most proud of. It has been interesting discussing Fraser street with mum as her memories now tend to be around the hardships they endured both financially and physically.

The other photo is the letterbox dad made originally and which I replaced with an identical version before mum sold in 2019. Regards Paul Zuvela 2022 (PBZ <pzuvela@bigpond.com>)

No 26 Fraser St sold December 2019 for $1,100,000 and July 2020 for $1,200,000

Amazing story ... I was googling the house owned by Stojan Marinovich, also from Vela Luka, in mid 70's near the South Freo primary school… I’m sure Antun and Franica would have know my grandparents BACICH in Chester St, Beaconsfield. Dinko Hrvat, correspondence 2022.

26 RIVERSIDE DRIVE, EAST FREMANTLE JETTY NO 9.

History

Although this site, known as the Oyster Beds is not Heritage listed it was placed on the East Fremantle Council’s Municipal Inventory on 15 Aug 2006.

Before it was an oyster farm set up by the first Greek immigrant to WA, Athanasios Auguste -it may have been the site of an earlier oyster bed…

Early Oyster beds; In December 1892 Charles and Charlotte Tolland opened a London Ham and Beef Shop in Barrack St., Perth. The shop was on the east side of Barrack St, 4 shops short of Hay St, next to Stein & Co (which became Bon Marche arcade).  From March – July 1893 the shop seemed to specialise in oysters, which came from Dirk Hartog Island. On 22 November 1893 they advertised: ‘Oysters! Oysters! OYSTERS! Just arrived. Brisbane Oysters at TOLLAND'S, Barrack street’. The Tolland’s purchased these oysters from J Stevens, a wholesale oyster dealer, ‘late of Melbourne’, who brought with him a large consignment of Brisbane oysters.

By March 1894 the shop had been taken over by J (aka Isaac or Ikey) Stevens and had become the Stevens Oyster Saloon. Soon after, to fix a general complaint that oysters were scarce and inferior  Stevens started growing oysters at ‘north’ Fremantle (The West Australian, Fri 20 Sept 1895). He ran the Oyster Saloon (Stevens & Millet) in Barrack St until June 1896 when it was taken over by the Sydney Oyster & Fish Co (Phalangas & Co). Ikey Stevens then moved to High St Fremantle and opened the Pioneer Oyster Saloon, adjoining the Town Hall in Fremantle. In 1898 he sold the Saloon and the Oyster beds, which were described as being in EAST Fremantle:

He came to Fremantle first in 1886, and then again in 1904, having returned to Egypt to marry Panaula Komninos. They had nine children. The restaurant in Fremantle was originally called Auguste's Oysters Beds and they also ran an Oyster Saloon in Perth.

Barry Martin, a well known West Australian diver was responsible for building the pylons- around the late 1960s/early 1970s- on which the Oyster Beds restaurant stood. He also loaned the owner at the time, Dawn Davies, diving helmets and other diving paraphernalia as decor.

HISTORY

1939 East Fremantle Sanitation. The contractor having given notice to end the sanitary pan service, the East Fremantle Municipal Council held a special meeting on Thursday night as some houses in the district are still served by the pan system. Previously the general purposes committee had met but, owing to the urgency of a decision "and the possibility of its recommendations being unacceptable to the full council," it had thrown the onus of decision on the council. On the motion of Cr. Ulrich, seconded by Cr. Gustafson, it was decided that all owners of unsewered properties be served with a notice to connect or to lay down septic tanks within 14 days of service of the notice, and, in the event of failure, that action be taken against them and the properties condemned. The council also decided to warn the Government departments concerned of the council's decision relating to condemnations. (reference)

HISTORY

1917 Wife Desertion. Husband Elopes With Niece. A case of more than ordinary interest, particularly to the older residents of Fremantle, was brought before the Fremantle Police Court yesterday. The complainant was Mrs. Hannah Thomas, who proceeded against her husband, Theodore Thomas, for desertion and asked that an order for separation, maintenance, and costs should be made against him. Mr. F. G. Unmack, who appeared for the complainant, told the Court how Thomas had associated himself with a young girl named Miguel and with her had left his home and proceeded by train to Port Augusta, where he was arrested. Mr. C. A. Mayhall appeared for the defendant and opposed the application.

The complainant stated that she was married at Fremantle in 1899 to the defendant with whom she lived happily at Rockingham until her niece, Bertha Miguel attracted her husband and caused a break between them… The first trouble over the girl Miguel occurred in Easter, 1916, when witness reproached her husband for his conduct. He then denied that there was anything between him and the girl. On three occasions when she reproached him Thomas caught her by the throat and on another occasion he slapped her face… On Sunday October 14, she drove to Hamilton Hill with her husband and on the way he told her that he had settled up things and that she could get along on her own as best she could. She asked where he was going, and he replied that he did not know but that he would never return to her. He promised to write to her, but had not done so, and she did not see him again until he returned in custody. She claimed maintenance of £3 a week… Having heard that her husband and the girl Miguel had lived together as man and wife she had determined never to be reconciled to him.

Constable Gregson said that on the previous evening he served a witness summons on Bertha Miguel at No. 26 Irwin street at about 10 o'clock. She was in the front bedroom with the defendant Thomas and both were attired in their night clothes. Joseph De San Miguel told the Court of an interview which he had with Thomas and his sister Bertha, in which the defendant said that he was going to get a divorce and marry the girl. His sister was 18 years old when she left with Thomas. Bertha Miguel, sworn, said that she went away with the defendant Thomas on October 15, arrangements having been made three weeks previously. They intended to go to Sydney for a trip and travelled as "Mr. and Mrs. Wilson" by the trans-Australian railway. They stayed at the Metro Hotel, Coolgardie under that name. Thomas told her that he intended to be divorced from his wife and would marry her. The statement of Constable Gregson regarding the previous evening was correct. She had been given £200 by Thomas and a fair amount of jewelery… Mr. Unmack asked the Bench to make an order for the maximum amount and this course was adopted, the order of the Court being judicial separation with maintenance of £2 10s. per week, and costs amounting to £6 13s.
