Inter-War Bungalow w Federation Influences

No 26 Fortescue Street, ‘Glenlessie’' is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped tile roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah has been partially enclosed on the south elevation. It is supported on turned timber posts. A central gable on the verandah marks the entry. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and pairs of double hung sash windows. Sills are rendered and there is a rendered string course with rendered dressings below the windows. The roofscape features a pair of render capped chimneys and finials.

HISTORY

1927 Death on January 16, at her late residence, Glenlessie, Fortescue-street, East Fremantle, Elizabeth Jane Gracie, dearly beloved wife of Edward Gracie, loving mother of Muriel and Albert, and loving sister of Mrs. M. Hill (Swanbourne) and Alfred (Palmyra), and Ernest Ferguson (Victoria); aged 53 years. (reference)

1931 Storm. Mr. E. Gracie, newsagent, of Fortescue-street, was about to begin his morning work about 5 o'clock, and had just driven his horse and sulky through his front gate when the animal stepped into a pool of water and immediately dropped dead. Mr. Gracie sensed the cause and on investigating found that a broken electric cable had fallen into the pool of water. He was seated in the sulky and had a narrow escape, but his son, who assists him in his work was even more fortunate, as he had opened the gate and was standing only a few feet from the fallen wire. 1938 Birth on May 10, at Nurse Bathgate's, East Fremantle, to Mr. and Mrs. E. Gracie, of 26 Fortescue-street, East Fremantle—a daughter (Stella Ruth). Both well. (reference)

1943 Death on September 14, at his residence, 26 Fortescue-street, East Fremantle, Edward Gracie, dearly beloved husband of Rene, loved father of Albert (RAN), Rom, Stella and the late Muriel... (reference)

1951 The engagement is announced of Roma Ruby Gracie, eldest daughter of Mrs. I. R. Gracie and the late Mr. E. Gracie, 26 Fortescue-street, East Fremantle, to Harvey Neil, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Sloan, 237 South-street, Hilton Park. (reference)
