HISTORY

Robin Gourley lived at this residence and was a well known boat builder, working for Howson & Murray and building his own boats including Roter class yachts.

Robert Gourley is mentioned as helping retrieve the bodies of two young children that drowned in 1908: (reference)

Robin built six boats in the 1920's and maybe 30's; the Mafalda built about 1928 for the Merendino family Fremantle fishermen), and Britannia, about 28 feet (owned for many years by a 'Blue' Munro). Britannia was a pleasure fishing boat but Mafalda was used for crayfishing from Fremantle until the 1960's and purchased by Tony Larard in 1969. There was another sister vessel Dorothy owned at Albany by a fisherman called Prideaux.

He still owned and sailed a yacht named Wangara in the 1950's. Robin's brother James was a boatbuilder and the other brother, Harry, although he built his own yacht Pioneer, was more of a house and building carpenter. ARCHITECTURE

Glasson Park is a small park with lawns, mature trees, half basketball court and children’s play equipment. The park is located on the corner of George Street and Glyde Street.

HISTORY

In the early days of the Colony George Pearse was given the land that became Plympton. He leased some land in the centre of Plympton to Forrest, Emanuel and Co. who used it as a slaughterhouse. They also operated a piggery on Canning Highway and there began to be complaints about the ‘noxious industry’- particularly when the East wind would blow the smells directly into Plympton.

1899 At a meeting of the East Fremantle Local Board of Health recently, a long discussion took place concerning an alleged nuisance caused on and near the Canning-road, east of Preston Point road, by the presence there of Messrs. Forrest, Emanuel and Co.'s stockyard and piggery. (reference). 1903 Slaughtermen’s work conditions: (reference)

This address lasted until 1934.

1933 Herbert Baker (1876-1951) operated Baker Bros-butchers from 1902-1933—a large butchery on George, Hubble and Glyde Streets, where Glasson Park is now. After a disastrous fire there in 1933, the land was cleared. (see more  information on Bakers life at fremantlestuff.info). He started a smaller butchers at 44 Hubble St. The block occupied by Baker Bros, is bounded on three sides by Hubble-street, George-street and Glyde-street, and is one block; south of Canning-road in the business section of East Fremantle. (reference)

1933 Spectacular Fire—Butchers' Plant Gutted Estimated Damage, £20,000. In a spectacular fire which destroyed the large butchering and ice-making plant of Baker Bros., at East Fremantle, late yesterday afternoon, damage estimated at £20,000 was caused within an hour. The fire brigades were handicapped by an inadequate supply of water, probably due to the unprecedented demand on the mains following the abnormal heat of the day. Many of the fire hoses could not be filled, and others delivered only small streams of water until Water Supply Department workmen cut off certain mains to increase the pressure. Detonations of bursting oil drums, which shot showers of sparks and burning material into the air, the temporary engulfing of surrounding premises under a pall of acrid black smoke, the destruction of a lofty condenser tower, which was converted into a mammoth torch, and the crashing of a 60ft. steel smoke stack above the engine room, were features of the conflagration, which was watched by big crowds. (reference)

Glasson Park was named after The Glasson family—Cornelius Glasson was an ex-councillor of East Fremantle (d 1912), (reference) and his son William Glasson was the secretary of the Coastal Dock, Rivers and Harbor Workers' Union (d 1959).

1953 Volunteers Lay Floor For Centre—A group of helpful people met at East Fremantle children's play centre yesterday to lay a floor. They hoped to make the Centre more comfortable for the 50 small children attending. Centre is a-building owned by East Fremantle Council—an old butcher's shop and freezing works at the corner of Hubble-st and George-st, East Fremantle. Centre, run by parents in East Fremantle, conducted an independent kindergarten and it was feared that the concrete floor would be a danger to the children's health in the winter. A number of parents volunteered to lay a wooden floor and the Perth firm of A Parkinson coped with the difficult task of attaching bearers to the concrete with a powder actuated "gun" which fires a bolt by an explosive charge directly through the wooden bearer and Into the concrete in one motion. By this method 2 men were able to fasten all the bearers in about an hour. Centre secretary M. D. Finlayson said yesterday. It is hoped to convert the building into a modern kindergarten. They would welcome assistance. (reference)

1938 Bleeds fatally before Child. Inflicting a long, deep gash in her thigh when she fell out of bed on to a china jug, 49 year-old Sarah Ann Sorrell died in Fremantle Hospital from haemorrhage on July 3. She had lain on the floor bleeding to death, with her five year-old son the only other occupant of the room. Today, in the Fremantle Courthouse, District Coroner H. J. Craig after inquiring into the tragedy, returned a finding of accidental death. Mrs. Sorrell's five-year-old son Leslie, youngest in a family of nine, who was alone in the house at the time of the accident, gave evidence. He was not sworn, but in answer to the Coroner said he went to sleep and woke up when he heard a bang. He saw that his mother had fallen out of bed, and a china jug was smashed. 'Mummie did not speak to me,' he said. William George Sorrell, wharf laborer, said that on the afternoon of July 2 he and his wife drank a small bottle of wine. When he left home about 7 p.m. she was showing signs of the liquor. On his return home about 10.45 his son-in-law told him that his wife had met with an accident. Going into the bedroom, he found her lying in a pool of blood. Police then arrived and his wife was taken to the hospital. He went to hospital early next morning, and remained with his wife until she died the same afternoon, but she was too weak to tell him what had happened. Sergeant Growder: Did you have any Quarrel? Sorrell: Not that day. We have had our little tiffs, but always thought the world of each other. She had some bruises?—Yes, I cannot make it out. She had none when I left...Deceased's son-in-law, Harold Dudley, told how he found Mrs. Sorrell lying on the floor of her bedroom surrounded in blood about 10.45 p.m. on July 2. He immediately telephoned for a doctor and the police.Questioned by the coroner as to why he had not done anything to stop the bleeding. Dudley said that he was not experienced in first-aid, and was afraid he might make Mrs. Sorrell's condition worse by disturbing her. Arriving at the house about 11 p.m., Detective Smith said he spoke to Mrs. Sorrell, who was very weak and semi-conscious. Twice she muttered: 'Fall out of Bed.' (reference)

Mrs. Sarah Ann Sorrell (49), of 125 Hubble-street, East Fremantle. William George Sorrell, worked as a lumper on the Fremantle wharves.

On arriving in this State he settled in Fremantle and had resided there for the past 42 years. He entered the service of the Gaols Department in 1895 and rose to the rank of principal warder, from which he retired after 26 years' service. He then took an extended trip to his homeland and on his return commenced business on his own account as a grocer in Dalgety-street, East Fremantle. He also purchased the wholesale Jute and Bag Store, trading under the name of Whitford and Co., Henry-street, Fremantle, and he was actively interested in both enterprises until the end of last year, when ill-health compelled his retirement.
