No 14 George Street is a single storey residence constructed of limestone with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a good example of a Federation Bungalow style house partly restyled in the Inter-War period. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by picture windows with casement and awning lights. The facade features a full width bullnose roof verandah supported on timber posts.

1935 Stone Jetty. History Sought of a Swan River Landmark. A few weeks ago Mr. N. Mauger, of Datatine via Katanning, wrote seeking the history of Stone Jetty, situated in the Swan River, near Rocky Bay. The matter was referred to Mr. F. I Bray, of the State Archives Board, and that gentleman wrote to several old residents asking for information. Mr. T. E. Groves, of 14 George-street. East Fremantle, was one of the gentlemen appealed to and he replied as follows:—"I remember the Jetty 60 years ago. It comprised a few logs held together by stone. Whitfield Bros. used to cart the cap stone to the end of the road and it was wheeled in barrows along the jetty into boats-flats we used to call them-and it was taken to Perth for road-making. In later years the jetty was built up to take the oyster shell for road-making at Point Walter. I believe what we called Stone-road, which led to the jetty, is called Shell-road now.” (reference)

Late Victorian / Early Federation - Georgian / Decorative Free Classical

38 Sewell Street (previously was no. 88) and 78 George St is a single-storey corner shop constructed in rendered masonry and limestone. There are low-pitched roofs behind a classically derived parapet wall. The shop is designed as a corner building, with its entrance set on the former and flanked by display windows. Over the opening is a bull-nosed roof verandah on timber posts. Above the shopfront there is an entablature with an elaborately decorative balustrade. The place is consistent with the pattern of development in Plympton and plays an important role in the pattern of development of a working class suburb and an example of the capacity for adaptation of the first generation of buildings.

No 38 George Street is a former single storey shop and residence adapted for residential use. It is constructed of rendered masonry with skillion roofs behind a classically derived parapet wall. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a centrally located front door flanked by arched head windows. The original shop fronts have been removed to make way for more domestic scaled windows and doors.

1928 While riding a bicycle at the intersection of East-street and Canning-road, East Fremantle, yesterday, George Brown, of 38 George-street East Fremantle, collided with a motorcycle driven by Harold Edward Olsen. 1931 Beatrice Mills, married woman, of James-street, Cannington, said that on June 3 she went in a motor car to the St. James Park estate with Mrs. Halkett and Miss. Halkett (now Mrs. Leisk) from their shop at George-street, East Fremantle. They were met by Mr. Roche and shown over house on the estate. Mr. Roche pointed out to Mrs. Halkett and her daughter a Corner block, which he said would be suitable for a shop. 1945 Fremantle Man Killed. A collision between a utility truck and a bicycle had a tragic sequel in very unusual circumstances at Fremantle this afternoon. According to a police report, George McKee, of 50 Petra street, Palmyra, was riding a bicycle at the junction of Edward and Queen Victoria street, Fremantle, about 5.15 p.m. today, when he was involved in a collision with a utility truck, driven by Ernest Benjamin Turner (46) , of 38 George street. East Fremantle. McKee fell from his machine but was not injured. Arising out of the mishap a dispute arose… Later the Fremantle police and the St. John ambulance were advised that Turner had been injured..John Eric Kelman (34), married, of 42 Cantonment street, Fremantle, was charged with having unlawfully killed Ernest Benjamin Turner. Glasson Park is a small park with lawns, mature trees, half basketball court and children’s play equipment. The park is located on the corner of George Street and Glyde Street.

HISTORY

In the early days of the Colony George Pearse was given the land that became Plympton. He leased some land in the centre of Plympton to Forrest, Emanuel and Co. who used it as a slaughterhouse. They also operated a piggery on Canning Highway and there began to be complaints about the ‘noxious industry’- particularly when the East wind would blow the smells directly into Plympton.

1899 At a meeting of the East Fremantle Local Board of Health recently, a long discussion took place concerning an alleged nuisance caused on and near the Canning-road, east of Preston Point road, by the presence there of Messrs. Forrest, Emanuel and Co.'s stockyard and piggery. (reference). 1903 Slaughtermen’s work conditions: (reference)

AIF 1916, William Stephen (Regimental number 1986) Occupation Blacksmith, address given -97 Hubble Street, East Fremantle, Single, Age at embarkation 23. Next of kin Mrs. Mary Stephen NAA Record AIF Record 97 Hubble st in 1916 was the registered address of Baker Brothers Butchers (now Glasson Park) Perhaps William Stephen lived onsite and worked as a blacksmith for the company. This address lasted until 1934.

1933 Herbert Baker (1876-1951) operated Baker Bros-butchers from 1902-1933—a large butchery on George, Hubble and Glyde Streets, where Glasson Park is now. After a disastrous fire there in 1933, the land was cleared. (see more information on Bakers life at fremantlestuff.info). He started a smaller butchers at 44 Hubble St. The block occupied by Baker Bros, is bounded on three sides by Hubble-street, George-street and Glyde-street, and is one block; south of Canning-road in the business section of East Fremantle. 1933 Spectacular Fire—Butchers' Plant Gutted Estimated Damage, £20,000. In a spectacular fire which destroyed the large butchering and ice-making plant of Baker Bros., at East Fremantle, late yesterday afternoon, damage estimated at £20,000 was caused within an hour. The fire brigades were handicapped by an inadequate supply of water, probably due to the unprecedented demand on the mains following the abnormal heat of the day. Many of the fire hoses could not be filled, and others delivered only small streams of water until Water Supply Department workmen cut off certain mains to increase the pressure. Detonations of bursting oil drums, which shot showers of sparks and burning material into the air, the temporary engulfing of surrounding premises under a pall of acrid black smoke, the destruction of a lofty condenser tower, which was converted into a mammoth torch, and the crashing of a 60ft. steel smoke stack above the engine room, were features of the conflagration, which was watched by big crowds. Glasson Park was named after The Glasson family—Cornelius Glasson was an ex-councillor of East Fremantle (d 1912), (reference) and his son William Glasson was the secretary of the Coastal Dock, Rivers and Harbor Workers' Union (d 1959).

1953 Volunteers Lay Floor For Centre—A group of helpful people met at East Fremantle children's play centre yesterday to lay a floor. They hoped to make the Centre more comfortable for the 50 small children attending. Centre is a-building owned by East Fremantle Council—an old butcher's shop and freezing works at the corner of Hubble-st and George-st, East Fremantle. Centre, run by parents in East Fremantle, conducted an independent kindergarten and it was feared that the concrete floor would be a danger to the children's health in the winter. A number of parents volunteered to lay a wooden floor and the Perth firm of A Parkinson coped with the difficult task of attaching bearers to the concrete with a powder actuated "gun" which fires a bolt by an explosive charge directly through the wooden bearer and Into the concrete in one motion. By this method 2 men were able to fasten all the bearers in about an hour. Centre secretary M. D. Finlayson said yesterday. It is hoped to convert the building into a modern kindergarten. Stone Section: Victorian Georgian - Corner Section: Federation Free Classical

48 George Street is a single storey shop (built 1905) that was constructed in two phases. It is constructed of limestone and brick on the west side and rendered masonry on the east side. The roofs are mainly skillion with one located behind a masonry parapet wall. A 'M' format roof addresses a section of George Street. All openings have brick quoins. The verandah wraps around the corner and spans a portion of the George Street facade. Above the verandah there are panelled parapets with a pediment on the corner. The parapet is divided in plan by piers and in recent times Cornucopia urns have been added to these piers.

HISTORY

1898 Matilda Drummond was a resourceful and enterprising woman. She started her own store at 44 Hubble St in 1898, took on a partner George LACEY in 1901, and then, after his death in 1909, moved to this corner store at 48 George Street (diagonally across the road) before retiring in 1919, handing on the business to her nephew Alfred James Marie. No 50 George Street is a fine single storey building that is constructed in rendered masonry with low pitched roofs behind a classically derived parapet wall. The place is designed as a corner building with entrances on both the corner and George Street. The corner entrance is flanked by authentic display windows under a skillion roofed verandah supported on timber posts. Above the verandah there is a panelled parapet wall.

No 66 George Street is a fine single storey shop constructed in rendered masonry with low pitched roofs behind a classically derived parapet wall. The shop is designed with separate entrances for the residence and shop. The entry to the residence is to the west and the shop entrance is in the centre of the shop façade. The shop entrance is recessed and is flanked by authentic display windows. Both entries sit under a bullnosed roofed verandah supported on turned timber posts with decorative post brackets and a frieze. Above the verandah there is a rendered parapet. The place is constructed in rendered masonry with low pitched roofs behind a classically derived parapet wall. The shops are designed as a corner and mid-block suite building. There is a separate entrance for the sole residence on Sewell Street. The corner shop has a corner entrance. A cantilevered awning follows the line of the building and spans across most of the facades. Most of the shop fronts have been modified. Above the awning are pairs of single pane double hung sash windows surrounded with rendered architraves. Each pair of windows identifies a dwelling. A pilaster divides each shop and residence. The top of the parapet is terminated with an entablature. There are a further two single storey shops attached to the eastern side of the building.

AIF 1915 Charles Edmund Fordham (Son of Charles and Jane Fordham) embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A28 Miltiades on 7 August 1916. Died on the Western Front 7 February 1917 AIF Record NAA Record Parents lived in View Terrace (number not known), East Fremantle in 1916, then moved to 79 George Street in 1918.

1928 Accident. On February 6, Mr. F. R. Peterson, the well-known Fremantle photographer, was unfortunate enough to collide with a child, Norman Gore, eight years of age. As a result of the collision the child died, and the inquest was held on Tuesday last by Mr. H. J. Craig, R.M., who delivered the-following verdict: "That Norman Gore came to his death at Fremantle on February from injuries caused in a collision with a motor car driven by Frank Reinhold Peterson; in Canning Road, East Fremantle, on the same date. That the injuries were caused accidentally." Evidence disclosed at the inquest indicated that the accident was not the fault of Mr. Peterson, who did everything possible to avert the collision. Jean Theresa Gore, ten years of age, residing at 79 George-street, East Fremantle, said she was walking along Canning-road with her brother Norman. "We were walking on the road, nearly in the gutter," she said. "On the left-hand side of the road going west we met our brother Albert, who took a hand cart from Norman and went ahead of us. I heard a car coming from behind. Norman was next to the footpath and when I heard the car coming. I caught hold of his shift and held him and told him not to move as the car was coming. Just as the car got close to us I let go my hold of Norman and he immediately started to run across the road, and the next thing I saw was a motor car knocking him down. After knocking Norman down the motor car travelled the distance between two telegraph posts. I screamed and ran to the corner of the street away from where my brother was lying. I saw a man pick up my brother and put him in a motor car. I heard no sound of motor horn, but I saw the car coming when I looked round a good way off.” (reference) Petersen lived at 28 Silas St.

No 88 George Street is a pair of restored shop fronts with new shops and a residence to the rear. It is constructed in brickwork, rendered masonry and limestone with corrugated iron roofing. The shops are designed as a mid block building. The front facade is symmetrically planned with entrances and display windows mirrored around a dividing wall. A bullnosed roof verandah on timber posts spans the shop fronts. The verandah is supported on timber posts.
The original building’s rear portions were removed and the current shops and residences were constructed in their place.

107 - 121 George Street is a fine single storey shop and seven attached residences. They are constructed in brick and rendered masonry designed in a rich rendering of the Federation Cottage Orné style. The shop is designed as a corner shop with a pediment over the door. While the front part of the shop is in tuck pointed brick the remainder is constructed in limestone with brick quoins. The houses are constructed in limestone and tuck pointed brick. They are divided by parapet walls and have gable roofs. The gables have elaborately decorative barges with applied oriel style niches and sculptures. The roofscape features tall chimneys with chimney caps.

1935 In the Fremantle Police Court yesterday the Magistrate (Mr. H. J. Craig, S.M.) inflicted fines totalling £45 on three men who admitted having kept common betting houses or places for betting last Saturday afternoon. Charles William Harry Cox (37), commission agent, was fined £20, with 10/ costs, in connection with premises at 85 George-street, East Fremantle; Frederick James McKenzie (27) clerk, was fined £15, with 10/ costs, for keeping premises at 62 Market-street, Fremantle; and John Harold Beattie (24), clerk, was fined £10, with 16/ costs, in connection with premises at 128 George-street, East Fremantle. 1938 Cyclist Injured. When the bicycle he was riding collided with a car at the corner of Henderson-street and South-terrace, Fremantle, about 6.30 p.m. yesterday, David Charles Carr (25), married, of 128 George-street, East Fremantle, received injuries to the right leg and was taken by a St. John ambulance to the Fremantle Hospital, where he was detained for observation. ARCHITECTURE

Federation Simple Free Classical

No 132 George Street is a fine single storey shop constructed in rendered masonry with a hipped roof behind a classically derived parapet wall. The shop is designed as an end block building. The facade is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by authentic display windows. The central door is the shop entrance and is recessed in an Ingo. The openings are under a bullnosed roofed verandah supported on timber posts. At the rear of the shop is what remains of the attached residence.
