ARCHITECTURE

An asymmetrical single storey residence, with a projecting northeast wing to the front facade and a skillion roofed verandah running the remainder of the facade. The brick walls were once tuck pointed but are now rendered. It appears the house was substantially altered not long after it was built including the addition of the wing which gives it its asymmetrical form. The additions show some characteristics of a simplified Federation Queen Anne style. The adjoining corner site once featured a block of three shops that were demolished post 1995.

HISTORY

1915 Obituary: By the death of Mr. Adam William Armstrong formerly of H.M. Customs, Fremantle which occurred last week, at his residence, ‘Gilmore’, Canning Road, East Fremantle, in his 63rd year, there has been removed a very old colonist of this State. The deceased gentleman was the second son of the late Mr Francis Fraser Armstrong, who arrived here in November, 1829, 86 years ago, by the ship Gilmore, which was the first ship to bring settlers to this State, therefore, Mr Armstrong is a descendant of one of the earliest pioneers. Mr Armstrong was born at Fremantle, and has resided at the port all his life, with the exception of six years in Geraldton, where he was employed by Messrs H. Gray and Co. He was well-known and highly respected, and was a Customs officer for 18 years, up to two years ago, when he retired owing to indifferent health. He leaves a widow and a grown up family of three sons and four daughters. (reference

Glanville's Building

Glanville’s Building (map)

ARCHITECTURE

Federation Free Classical

Glanville's Building is located at 34-36 Canning Highway and 5A & 5B Riverside Road, Glanville's Building is a brick residence with rendered details and low-pitched corrugated iron roof that is concealed by a dominant decorative, flamboyant parapet. It is a very fine and eccentric expression of the Federation Free Classical style. The street elevation accommodated two shopfronts with entrance doors and modest windows. Glanville's Buildings exhibits many of architect Hitchcock's 'signature' details. Spread over a two storey facade the contrast of stucco decoration against tuck-pointed brickwork is quite striking and quite unlike any other building in Perth.

HISTORY

Glanville’s Building, 34-36 Canning Highway and 5A & 5B Riverside Rd East Fremantle, was built in 1902 by Norman Hitchcock for Mr Henry Charles Glanville, a chemist of Market Street, Fremantle, in 1902. The ground floor (street level) of the building housed two shops: a pharmacy from which Mr Glanville dispensed his potions, and a tailor shop operated by Rummer and Sweet. The basement and upper floors of the building were used for storage and the Glanville family's accommodation. The Glanville family owned the building until 1946. It was renovated in 1981 and was entered on the State Heritage Register with permanent listing in 1994.

The Glanville's Buildings, although altered internally, is the best example of the work of architect Hitchcock. Hitchcock designed a number of terrace houses in Melbourne however, Glanville's Buildings is the only known three-story example by Hitchcock in Western Australia. Other Hitchcock buildings in the East Fremantle area include: the 'George Street Mews', 107-121 George Street; terrace houses at 46-52 King Street; two semi-detached houses at 25-27 Sewell Street and a gable fronted detached house in Hubble Street. Hitchcock also built the National Hotel in Fremantle.

HISTORY

1912 Caustic Comments on Affairs at Fremantle. Chemist Tom Owen, the organiser of the East Fremantle Band penned the following somewhat remarkable effusion: "Dear 'Pagan,' Many thanks for the splendid ad.you have given the East Fremantle District Brass Band, and incidentally myself. But in commenting on my disposition to advertise my ringworm cures on the band's concert tickets you create the impression that I am exploiting the band for my own benefit. As a matter of fact, I have to pay for the privilege of advertising on these tickets. ... I hope after reading this letter you will feel chasened (sic!) in spirit, and "forever always put the best and not the worst construction on people's motives." Friend Owen is barking up the wrong tree, but "The Pagan" hastens to assure him that he appreciates his well meant advice contained in the last portion of his epistle. (reference)

The impact was received by one of the brick walls of the kitchen, and besides extensive damage to the wall, the gas stove was dislodged, and a large quantity of crockery on a dresser was broken. Members of the Owen's family were absent from the kitchen at the time, but had the accident happened a few minutes later, it is probable that the family would have been seated at lunch, and somebody would have undoubtedly been struck by pieces of falling crockery or bricks. Plympton Hotel (Tradewinds)

Plympton Hotel (Tradewinds) (map)

ARCHITECTURE

Federation Free Classical

Plympton Hotel (Tradewinds) is located at 59 Canning Highway. The former Plympton Hotel, now known as the Tradewinds Hotel, is a fine expression of the Federation Free Classical style. The street elevation is arranged to accommodate verandahs over the bars and balconies of north facing rooms. A dominant feature is the central pediment and a short tower and cupola on the western end of the building. A large number of additional rooms have been added at the rear and to the east of the original building. The building has a long frontage along Canning Highway and has a low limestone retaining wall.

HISTORY

The Plympton Hotel was part of the suburban residential development associated with the expansion of East Fremantle during the Goldrush period of the 1880s and 1890s.

1896 ‘‘APPLICATION FOR PUBLICAN'S GENERAL LICENSE - To the Worshipful the Justices of the Peace Acting in and for the District of Fremantle, in Western Australia. I GEORGE NEWMAN, of North Fremantle, Forwarding Agent (married), do hereby give notice that it is my intention to apply for a Publican's General License for the sale of liquor in the house proposed to be erected at the corner of Hubble-street and Canning-road, Plympton, in the Licensing District of Fremantle. The house proposed to be licensed will be erected on Lots 214 and 215 of Swan Location 71, and will contain four sitting-rooms and ten bedrooms exclusive of those required by my family. The premises belong to George Alfred Davies, George Pearse, and William Frederick Samson, all of Fremantle, Merchants. I intend to keep the said premises as an inn or public house, under the sign of the Plympton Hotel’’. (reference)

The first meeting of the East Fremantle Council was held August 14, 1897 in the Plympton Hotel (now the Trade Winds Hotel) where the first Mayor Matthew Moss was sworn in.

A comprehensive description of the Plympton Hotel in 1898 can be found in this article (reference)

“There is a fine drawing room upstairs for ladies, and also a smoking room for gentlemen, while there are comfortable lounge chairs on the verandah. A good table is provided, and the internal management of the house being under the supervision of Mrs Newman, it is an exceedingly well regulated, and well conducted home... Communication with Fremantle is easy, special omnibuses running from the suburb to the port at frequent intervals throughout the day and evening. There is every facility for bathing, and the house is furnished with electric bells and a telephone. On the ground floor, which is devoted chiefly to the public business of the hotel, are large and commodious bars, smoking and reading rooms, as also a special room for commercial travellers to transact their business in...and there is a large and well lighted billiard room. At a little distance from the house, and built on the hotel grounds, is a well constructed recreation hall, which will accommodate three hundred people comfortably. This forms an admirable local centre for concerts and amusements of all kinds, and also provides a suitable hall for public meetings.’’

1904 ‘‘The Plympton Hotel is still increasing in popularity under the guidance of Mr Joseph Augier, for many years known in connection with the Park Hotel. Mr Augier has made such vast improvement to his property that already the Plympton is becoming known as one of the most comfortable and select hostelries on the coast. Improvements have been made under a professional eye, and a reputable firm has re-furnished the establishment throughout. The Plympton commands an excellent view of the river, harbor, and all the beauty spots of Fremantle, being an ideal resort during the hot summer months. (reference) There is also mention of stables and the Plympton was the last hotel in Fremantle to have a horse trough’’.

1906 I, William Alfred Fearn, hotelkeeper, widower, now residing at the Plympton hotel, corner of canning-road and hubble-street, east fremantle in the district of Fremantle do hereby give notice that it is my intention to apply at the next Licensing Meeting to be holden for this district for a publicans general licence, for the sale of liquor in the house and appurtenances there unto belonging, at the corner of canning road and hubble street, east fremantle, containing three sitting rooms and twenty bedrooms, exclusive of those required by my family, and rented from Katherine Samson, George Davies, and George Pearse, Letty Davies and Arthur Elvin Davies and now licensed under the sign of the Plympton hotel, and which I intend to keep as an inn or public house. HISTORY

Edmund Harry Gray (1878–1964) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1923 to 1952, representing West Province. Gray arrived in South Australia from England  in 1898. In 1910 he moved to Western Australia, and for eight years farmed near Tambellup. He then moved to Fremantle, becoming a tally clerk on the Fremantle Wharf. Gray served on the East Fremantle Municipal Council from 1927 to 1946 and during this time was elected to the Legislative Council on four occasions (in 1926, 1932, 1938, and 1946). He lived at 5 Bolton Street, East Fremantle from 1926-1954.

1929 Cr. E. H. Gray, M.L.C., announced at last night's meeting of the East Fremantle Council that the Infant Health Centre, which had been formed to cater for the East Fremantle, and North Fremantle municipalities, and the Melville Road Board area, would be officially opened by the Minister for Health (Mr. Munsie) on July 7… the organisation had been formed as a result of a conference between Government representatives and local authorities. The Government had granted a subsidy of £100, and the three local authorities had each made a grant of £25 towards the movement. The East Fremantle Council had also granted the use of a room with all conveniences for the use of the clinic. The centre had been fortunate in obtaining the services of Sister Kidson-Hunter, who would be in charge of its activities. The council expressed its satisfaction at the report submitted. (reference)

This Centre is the second largest in the State being second to the Centre in the City of Perth. The statistics for the year speak for themselves and show in a graphic manner the big work Sister Salmon is successfully carrying on. HISTORY

1906 East Fremantle Postal Requirements. To the Editor. Sir,—Information is given in your paper of this day that Mr. Angwin, mayor of this municipality, has written to his friend, Mr. Carpenter, stating that the delivery of letters is now made direct from Fremantle Post Office, and asking him to get the postal authorities to instruct the Deputy Postmaster General to have all mails for East Fremantle sent direct to the Canning-road Post Office. Unfortunately, a number of streets belonging to the Municipality of Fremantle, consisting of, from the boundary of one side of East-street, which ends East Fremantle Municipality, then run into Fremantle viz., Tuckfield-street, Cantonment-road, Burt-street, and others to James-street, are all on the electoral roll of East Fremantle, and as the post office authorities deal only with the divisions, all letters and parcels addressed to the residents of these streets have been sent to the post office, Canning-road, which caused great delay in their delivery… John McCleery (reference)

1906 Sir,—Mr. McCleery's statement in your issue of Saturday, that I requested my friend, Mr. Carpenter, M.H.R., to have all letters in the East Fremantle district delivered from the Canning-road Post Office must have been an assumption on his part, as no such request was ever made by me. It is a matter of indifference whether the delivery is made from the Canning-road or the central Fremantle office, if there is no delay in the delivery by the change… W. C. Angwin (reference)

1921 ...Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Stedman will leave the district for East Fremantle, where Mr. Stedman has been transferred to take charge of the post office in that centre. During the past five years Mr. Stedman has been postmaster at Leonora and by his courtesy and obliging manner has given much satisfaction to the public. Both himself and Mrs. Stedman will be much missed in the social life of the town, and were most enthusiastic golfers—rarely missing an opportunity of having a round or two of golf… (reference)

HISTORY

1909 A Woman’s Suffering. Complaint Against Fremantle Fire Brigade. Referred To The Fremantle Council. At the last meeting of the Fremantle Lumpers' Union, held on Wednesday evening, the following letter was received from Constable O'Shea, the officer in charge of the Plympton Police Station, in reference to the attendance of the Fremantle ambulance van on the occasion of last Monday's fatal accident at Point Walter-road:—"I have been requested to bring under your notice the fact that on the night of February 1 a serious accident occurred at Point Walter-road, whereby a woman named Mrs. Eva Muriel Selwood, aged 22 years, was thrown out of a sulky. Dr. Anderson was telephoned for, and attended the patient. He sent for the Fremantle ambulance, and it was refused. The unfortunate woman was then placed in a carrier's cart, with the intention of conveying her to the Fremantle Hospital. When near the Plympton Police Station the jolting of the cart was apparently causing the woman such agony that her husband decided to take her out. She was then placed on the side of the street, in Canning-road. Dr. Stewart, who had arrived on the scene, asked that the ambulance be rung up. Constable McKay rang up the Fremantle Fire Station at 10.45 p.m. for the ambulance, but he was refused point-blank, being informed that the ambulance would not come out to East Fremantle for this woman. At 11,5 p.m. Constable O'Shea rang up the Fire Brigade for the ambulance, and was informed that it would not come out, as it was out of their district. I replied that it was the most scandalous, callous, and most dastardly thing I had ever heard of, for any man to refuse to come out to relieve an unfortunate woman who was dying on the King's highway. I then asked who had control of the ambulance, and was informed by Foreman Elliott that Mr. Lapsley had control of the ambulance, I asked him to switch me on to him, and in a few seconds I was informed by Elliott that the ambulance was being despatched for the removal of the poor unfortunate woman. The ambulance arrived at 11.30 p.m., and the woman died at 3.30 p.m. on the following day. The agony which this woman went through while lying on the side of the Canning-road was unbearable for any white man to witness." (reference)
