1962 Murray Vernon Quartemaine (1931-2011) married Ute Tine Gudrun Ritter

Mr Quartermaine was a pioneer of Perth's travel industry in the 1970s until he became the highest profile victim of conman Christo Moll when he signed his family company Quartermaine Travel over for $1.2 million in shares which were later proved worthless. His first marriage to Ute, with whom he had sons Lance and Mark and daughter Simone, later collapsed.

Quartermaine was brutally murdered, aged 79, in 2011, in his South Perth home by a delusional Frenchwoman… (reference) (reference) Mark Quartermaine told the congregation at his father’s funeral how his father's strong character helped him start again.

"In 1979 at the age of 49 when he had to rebuild his life again, dad showed strength and determination," he said. "He relaunched his international business career which he did with the help of many people here today."

One of those people was Alan Bond, who gave Mr Quartermaine the job of selling Tooheys beer to British drinkers in London for the Bond Brewing Group. It was in London that Mr Quartermaine met his second wife Yetunde, with whom he had a 12-year-old daughter Fiona.

Lance Quartermaine said his father, who was a fifth generation West Australian, shared his love of culture and fine things with everyone he met:

"Our childhood home at East Fremantle was party central. I think that's where they invented the long lunch which became the early dinner". (reference)

ARCHITECTURE

No 17 Angwin Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated zinc roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style, though much of what gives it its current appearance is the outcome of works completed between 1996-98. At this time the place was modified to have Federation Filigree elements. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts with timber filigree work. The verandah is a reconstruction and extension of the original verandah. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts and is also a reconstruction. A half-timbered gable is located on the verandah, which is an original feature. As a result of an extension to the north the gable is located centrally. Below the gable is a bay window featuring double hung sash windows. The bay window is flanked by further double hung sashes, though the window to the south was originally French doors. The roof features brick and rendered chimneys. The northern chimney is a later addition. The place is located on a steep sloping site and addresses the river. As a result the elevation to Angwin Street is largely ignored. To accommodate the slope of the site the house is set on limestone foundations. Walls are brick with render string courses and sills.

1917 Claim For Union Contributions. A Fremantle Case. In the Fremantle Local Court yesterday morning, before Mr. E.P. Dowley, LRM., D. J. Gruer, represented by Mr. J. David Moss, was charged by the Master Carters' Union of Employers with having failed to pay his annual contributions and special levy to the union, of which he was a member... The president of the union (P. J. Hevron) submitted the rules of the organisation. He stated that on November 15, 1915, a meeting of the members of the union was held at which… for some time defendant was on the committee of management of the union, but in view of the non-payment of his contributions he was no longer a member of the union. He had not resigned. E. R. Bastin, secretary of the plaintiff union, stated that defendant owed certain moneys to the union. The claim was made up as follows: Annual contributions, 4  teams at 10s. per team, £2; special levy, 4 teams at 5s., £1. total £3. The dues mentioned were for the year 1916, during which period defendant was a member of the union, and were collectable under the rules of the organisation...Mr. Moss then entered the contention that as the rules as amended had not been registered they were invalid, and. consequently the plaintiffs were not entitled to claim contributions under the amended rule. Mr. Dowley supported the defence, and dismissed the plaint. (reference)

HISTORY

1931 CARRIED ON THE BUMPERS. Traffic Constable's Experience. The remarkable sight of a uniformed constable being knocked from his motor cycle by a car and carried on the front bumper of the car, clinging to the radiator cap, for over 100ft, was witnessed by some people in Wellington-street, West Perth, at sunset on March 17. Constable William Robinson, of the Traffic Department, was riding one of the department's motor cycles west along Wellington-street, about 5.15 p.m., when a car, driven in the same direction by William Sumpton, of Angwin-street, East Fremantle, overtook his machine and carried it along. After proceeding 25ft., the car and cycle became disengaged and the former vehicle, with the constable clinging to the front, swerved to the southern footpath and travelled for 112ft. before being stopped. The constable alighted from his perch, and, walking round to the driver, asked him why he had run him down. Mr. Sumpton is reported to have explained that the sun was in his eyes. Constable Robinson was severely bruised, but suffered no other injuries. His clothing was torn and the motor cycle was damaged. (reference)
