Inter-War Californian Bungalow

No 17 Fortescue Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a half hipped roof entry porch. The porch is supported on Tuscan columns set on piers. A brick balustrade spans between the piers. The verandah roof extends across a window to the north to act as a sun hood. There are central doors flanked by lead light casement windows. A half timbered, gable extends above the entry porch.

No 17 Stratford Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is a simple expression of the Inter-War Porch style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust bay and a hip roof porch. The porch is supported on paired brick piers set on a rendered wall. The thrust bay features a set of casement and fixed light windows under a tiled awning. There is a central door flanked by a further set of windows. The place sits on limestone foundations. The lower walls are rendered and the upper walls are face brick. The roofscape features rendered chimneys.

ARCHITECTURE

No 17 Angwin Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated zinc roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style, though much of what gives it its current appearance is the outcome of works completed between 1996-98. At this time the place was modified to have Federation Filigree elements. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts with timber filigree work. The verandah is a reconstruction and extension of the original verandah. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts and is also a reconstruction. A half-timbered gable is located on the verandah, which is an original feature. As a result of an extension to the north the gable is located centrally. Below the gable is a bay window featuring double hung sash windows. The bay window is flanked by further double hung sashes, though the window to the south was originally French doors. The roof features brick and rendered chimneys. The northern chimney is a later addition. The place is located on a steep sloping site and addresses the river. As a result the elevation to Angwin Street is largely ignored. To accommodate the slope of the site the house is set on limestone foundations. Walls are brick with render string courses and sills.

No 17 Oakover Street is a single storey house constructed in brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with an offset entry door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and sets of casement windows. The front facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on paired timber posts. There is a gabled porch over the verandah that marks the entry. The roofscape features a pair of render capped chimneys. The original tiled roof has been replaced with corrugated iron sheeting.

HISTORY

1938 State Shipping Service. After 25 years in the State Shipping Service, Mr. S. S. Glyde, who has been manager since it was made a separate department in 1919, will today commence long service leave before retiring in January next. He will be succeeded by Mr. K. W. Ward, accountant and assistant manager of the service, who will be acting-manager until Mr. Glyde's official retirement. (reference)
1939 Shipping Man’s Death. After an illness of several weeks, Mr. K. W. Ward, acting-manager of the State Shipping Service, died suddenly at his home in Windsor-road, East Fremantle, yesterday morning.The late Mr. Ward was born in Alberton, South Australia, in 1890, and came to this State In 1902, later joining the staff of the Adelaide Steamship Co. Ltd. He remained with this company until 1916, when he became associated with the Fremantle Harbour Trust and State shipping Service, which were then combined. In 1920 he was appointed accountant of the State Shipping Service and in 1928 also became assistant manager. When Mr. S. S. Glyde retired from the position of manager last June, Mr. Ward was appointed acting-manager, and was to have assumed the managership towards the end of this month. Mr.Ward had been closely associated with the East Fremantle Baptist Church almost from its formation, and was secretary for more than 12 years. He was a member of the Baptist Union council and several committees connected with it, and also belonged to the Fremantle Rotary Club. The late Mr. Ward leaves a widow. His brother is Mr. Vernon Ward, manager of the Harbour and Lights Department at Fremantle. (reference)

No. 17 (previously was no. 51) Sewell street is a single story cottage constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width bull-roofed verandah supported on timber posts. A part of the verandah has timber lattice infill panels. A timber rail spans between the timber posts. The house is elevated above street level. A set of concrete stairs with a timber handrail lead from the street level to the verandah.

The Late Mr. Edward William Davie Browne. The deceased was born at Dunedin, New Zealand, and came to Western Australia 35 years ago; he was engaged in business on his own account as a tailor for many years in East Fremantle. Mr. Browne spent a very active life and took a prominent part in municipal affairs, being a member of the East Fremantle Municipal Council for about ten years from 1917 and retired then only on account of ill-health. It is interesting to note that as a councillor Mr. Browne never contested an election, being always returned unopposed. He was appointed to the Fremantle Municipal Hospital Board as Government nominee, but after serving only twelve months was compelled to retire, for health reasons. Mr. Browne was of quiet, genial disposition, and during his long association with the residents of Fremantle made a large circle of friends... (reference)

It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a full width and return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on short timber posts set over rendered piers. The verandah roof extends over the gable bay. A prominent gable sits centrally on the roofscape. The gable bay sits in front of the main gable. Both gables feature weatherboard cladding. The front elevation features a set of casement windows and a pair of doors. The entry door is located on the south elevation under the return verandah. The lower walls are rendered and the upper walls are face brick. The roofscape features a tall brick chimney and finials.

The lot spans between Preston Point Road and Reynolds Street. The place was formerly a shop and has since been converted into a residence. A two storey addition has been built to the rear. The shop is a simple expression of the Federation Free Classical style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is a replacement and is supported on timber posts. The entry door is located on the corner. The door is flanked by fixed light windows and hopper lights. A rendered parapet extends above the verandah.

Singapore Cedar Bungalow, containing spacious hall and four fine lofty rooms, two of which are 19ft. x 15ft and two 17ft x 15ft., all solidly lath and plastered. Also kitchen, bathroom, and two small bedrooms. The verandahs are 7ft. wide and partly enclosed with jarrah lattice. There is a detached washhouse, with copper and rainwater tank. 1917 Claim For Union Contributions. A Fremantle Case. In the Fremantle Local Court yesterday morning, before Mr. E.P. Dowley, LRM., D. J. Gruer, represented by Mr. J. David Moss, was charged by the Master Carters' Union of Employers with having failed to pay his annual contributions and special levy to the union, of which he was a member... The president of the union (P. J. Hevron) submitted the rules of the organisation. He stated that on November 15, 1915, a meeting of the members of the union was held at which… for some time defendant was on the committee of management of the union, but in view of the non-payment of his contributions he was no longer a member of the union. He had not resigned. E. R. Bastin, secretary of the plaintiff union, stated that defendant owed certain moneys to the union. The claim was made up as follows: Annual contributions, 4 teams at 10s. per team, £2; special levy, 4 teams at 5s., £1. total £3. The dues mentioned were for the year 1916, during which period defendant was a member of the union, and were collectable under the rules of the organisation...Mr. Moss then entered the contention that as the rules as amended had not been registered they were invalid, and. consequently the plaintiffs were not entitled to claim contributions under the amended rule. 1921 Theft. John Douglas Trigg, a middle-aged man, denied a charge alleging that he had at Fremantle, on April 1 taken the sum of £5 the property of Clara Gruer, by whom he was then employed. The Bench found the charge proved. Sentence of one month's imprisonment was imposed. (reference)

1924 Captain C. M. Clayton, owing to his departure for Singapore, to Offer for Sale by Public Auction as above: Part of Lot. 1 of Swan Locations 72 and 827, with a frontage of approximately 99ft. to Allen-street by a depth of 132ft. The improvements comprise a magnificently built Singapore Cedar Bungalow, containing spacious hall and four fine lofty rooms, two of which are 19ft. x 15ft. and two 17ft. x 15ft., all solidly lath and plastered. 1933 Boy Electrocuted. Fatal Climb on Roof. In the Fremantle Police Court yesterday, before the Deputy-Coroner, (Mr. G. F Payne) an inquiry was conducted into the death of Peter Kenneth Broun (5) who was electrocuted at 17 Allen-street, East Fremantle, on January 4. Dr. F. H.U. Baker said that about 4.45 p.m. on January 4 he was called to 17 Allen-street, which is next door to his own house. He saw the child lying on the roof near the electric wire...The Deputy-Coroner returned a finding of accidental death, no blame being attached to anyone. (reference)

1947 Death of Capt. C. M. Clayton, a former member of the pilot service at Fremantle, died at the Fremantle Hospital on Monday after an illness of about five weeks. Capt. Clayton was well known in shipping circles in this State. He joined the State Shipping Service in 1917 and in 1924 went to Singapore, where he was wharf superintendent until 1936. He then returned to Western Australia and early in the war joined the Royal Australian Navy as a commissioned officer in the Naval Control Office at Fremantle. He was later attached to the United States Navy as a liaison officer. After the war he joined the pilot service and later became a marine cargo surveyor at Fremantle. (reference)
