1950 Super Truck Overturns. Phillip Ernest Cockroft of 21 Bedford Street, East Fremantle, driver of a semi-trailer unit loaded with superphosphate was lucky to escape injury when his vehicle overturned after failing to negotiate a bend on Brookton-Aldersyde Road, just before 10 o’clock on February 10. Cockroft, who was travelling alone, failed to notice the bend, which was approximately one mile from town, as he approached and consequently had to suddenly swing his vehicle to follow the road. The semi-trailer portion slid in loose sand on the outside of the bend, swinging the vehicle from the road formation and causing it to overturn, the vehicle was fairly extensively damaged, although Cockroft was not even scratched and was able to walk to town for assistance. Inter-War Decorated porch House w Spanish Mission / Arts and Crafts Influences

No 21 Oakover Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. The place addresses both Oakover Street and Millenden Street. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on rendered columns. A gable roofed porch is located central and marks the entry. The gable bays features a tapered chimney flanked by windows under sunhoods. There is a central door flanked by a pair of casement windows. The roofscape features tall rendered chimneys and finials.

HISTORY

Laurence Joseph Vick, known as ‘Joe’ was a colourful Fremantle identity. A Tally Clerk and well-known Bookmaker, he and his glamorous wife and daughters, lived at ‘Kilwinning’, 21 Oakover St., East Fremantle from 1931 until 1951. 1934 Betting Charges. Pleas of guilty were entered by Joseph Laurence Vick (36), Edward John Knapp (32) and Alexander Maru (47) when they appeared in the Fremantle Police Court today to answer charges of having used and kept premises as common betting houses. (reference)

1936 Fined For Illegal Betting. Pleading guilty to a charge of having kept illegal betting houses, Laurence Joseph Vick (35), clerk, was fined £15. (reference)

1939 Three Men Fined. On charges of having obstructed pedestrian traffic, three men appeared before Mr. H. J. Craig, SM., in the Fremantle Police Court yesterday. Charged with having obstructed pedestrian traffic in Bannister-street, Fremantle, on August 12, John Thomas Vicks (36), clerk, of 325 High-street, Fremantle, was fined £1, with 4/6 costs. Federation Federation Bungalow w Regency Influences

No 21 Staton Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick house with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width return bull-nosed roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts. The verandah terminates on a gabled roof bay on the south elevation. There is a vertical timber balustrade and decorative frieze between the posts. The return verandah has been enclosed. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and pairs of double hung sashes. The walls are tuck-pointed brick with rendered string courses, sill and dressings.

HISTORY

1931 Accident. Cyclist Badly Hurt. Collision with Truck. About 11.30 this morning a bicycle ridden by Wallace Stewart (19), of 21 Staton-road. East Fremantle, collided with a motor truck in Canning-road, between the traffic bridge and the Richmond Hotel. Stewart was conveyed to the Fremantle Hospital, where his name was placed on the danger list. He has a probable fracture of the skull. Lionel Gillett, of 335 Hensman-road, Subiaco, the driver of the truck, informed the police that the injured man was troubled by a bag of tools he was carrying, and in an apparent endeavor to shift them swerved and collided with the truck, which was travelling in the opposite direction. No. 21 Allen Street is a single storey house constructed in brickwork and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is an unusual expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with an offset front door and hopper light flanked by side lights and a double hung sash window. The facade features a bull nosed roofed verandah running between two gabled bays. The verandah is set on turned timber posts. The gable bays feature sets of three casement windows with hopper lights. The windows are under bull nosed awnings. There are rendered strings in the brickwork.

No 21 Angwin Street is a two storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a gambrel, hipped and gable tiled roof. There are extensive modifications and additions. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The place is asymmetrically composed with an irregular plan. A hip roofed verandah wraps around the front façade. The verandah spans both storeys and is supported on timber posts. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. The central section of the verandah has been extended west. A particular feature of the house is its richly decorative roofscape with gables, finials, decorative fretwork and render capped chimneys. Sets of casement windows are arrayed over the front façade. The place is located on a steep sloping site and addresses the river. As a result the elevation to Angwin Street is largely ignored.
The place retains its form and most of its details. There are additions to the front, rear and side of the house. There is a garage to the east.

Late Victorian / Early Federation, Georgian / Simple Regency Influences

No. 21 (previously was no. 43) Glyde street is a single-storey residence constructed of rendered limestone and rendered brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a fine example of a Federation Bungalow style house. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door with a hopper light flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features a full-width bullnose roofed verandah supported on stop chamfered timber posts with post brackets. A simple vertical timber balustrade spans the timber posts. The openings are surrounded with rendered quoins.

HISTORY

1895 The recent explosion at Rocky Bay. ...William Crossling, a quarry laborer, who viewed the explosion from a distance of about 25 or 30 ft., said Mr. Irvine used the pricker rather freely. Immediately preceding the explosion there was a fizzing resembling the effect produced by plunging hot iron into cold water and a little sand was discharged from the hole and then the explosion almost immediately followed. Prior to the ceremony the staffs of the Police and Local Courts met and presented Mr. Claffey with a silver-mounted umbrella and a tobacco pouch, both suitably inscribed. The front facade features an offset French door and a corner window suite. The entry door is located on the north elevation under the return verandah. The roofscape features a brick chimney and finials.

It is asymmetrically composed with a part width arcaded porch. The porch sits proud of the house and is supported on barley twist columns. There is a pair of front doors flanked by sets of casement windows. There is a sunhood over the northern set of windows. The place sits on limestone foundations. The lower walls to the front facade are face brick and rendered above sill height. A soldier course header divides the face brick and rendered sections. The side elevations are rendered. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.

The posts feature decorative post brackets. The roof is dominated by a weatherboard clad gable. The gable bay sits in front of the main roof’s gable. The gable bay features, weatherboard cladding and casement windows under a sunhood. The entrance door is located on the south elevation under the return verandah. The roofscape features finials. The place sits on limestone foundations.

A set of masonry steps leads from the verandah down to the garden. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.

The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gabled thrust bay and a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on Tuscan columns set over rendered piers. A masonry balustrade runs between the columns. The half-timbered, gable bay features a bay window. A double hung sash window flanked by sidelights sits in the bay window. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a pair of double hung sash windows. The original detail has to some extent been lost by rendering. The roofscape features rendered chimneys

HISTORY

Captain Charles Severin Coalstad’s family came from Bunbury and lived in this house from 1918. It was said of Captain Colstead that "No finer sailorman ever used the port of Fremantle." (reference) (see Notable people)

1920 Obituary. Mr. John Arbuckle, late of the Western Ice Co. Fremantle, and of 46 Glyde-street, East Fremantle passed away on October 6 in his 55th year. The deceased was born in Victoria, but had resided for the last 24 years in this State where he made many friends on account of his kindly disposition. About 25 years ago Mr. Arbuckle was a member of the famous Lord Nelson Band, which won the championship of Australasia at the Ballarat competition for some years in succession...He was a foundation member of the old East Fremantle Band, which in time took various names but is now the Fremantle Town Band. The long funeral cortege, headed by the Fremantle Town Band under the baton of Secretary L. C. MacKenzie moved from the residence on Friday afternoon, 8th inst., and proceeded to the Fremantle Cemetery...The chief mourners were Mrs. J. Arbuckle (widow), Mr. William Anderson (son), Mrs. W. A. Ellis and Mrs. F. Smedley (daughters)...The pall-bearers were workmates from the Western Fresh Food and Ice Co., viz., Messrs. L. Pearce, J. Griffiths, H. Newman, R. A. McCaw, A. Rennie and S. P. 1928 Death of  Mr. John Fredrick Oborne who for 12 years had been connected with the Wyndham Meat Works, Wyndham, and of 46 Glyde-street, East Fremantle, died on July 5 at St. John of God Hospital at the age of 43 years. Born at Dorset, England, he had resided in this State for the past 18 years. Besides Wyndham, Mr. Oborne was well known at Wooroloo and the south-west districts. The facade features a full width bullnose roofed verandah supported by square timber posts. There is a St Andrew’s cross balustrade between the timber posts.

1934 Mrs. J. Stoddart (Prize winner for “Bright Ideas”); prize of Two Linen Tea Towels goes this week to Mrs. J. Stoddart, 22 Hubble-street, East Fremantle whose entry is as follows: Picnic Assets: A canvas bag, with a handle, in which to carry the billy when it is dirty is a useful help at picnic time. Aspirin bottles with holes pierced in the tops make handy salt and pepper shakers for picnics. Economical Cot Sheets. Bags in which hams are packed may be bought cheaply from most growers. When unpicked, hemmed and well boiled they make economical and serviceable cot sheets. To Destroy Ants. A sure method of destroying ants outside the house is to pour petrol on the spot; then, after taking due precautions, set it alight. A Handy Iron-Stand. Tack a piece of board, cut to shape, to the back of an asbestos mat. It will then prevent the table from being scorched, also the surface of the iron from being scratched. To Keep Cakes Fresh. The bay windows have sets of three casement windows with hopper lights. The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is set on turned timber posts with small post brackets. A St Andrew’s cross balustrade is set between the posts. There is a gable over each bay window. There are rendered strings in the brickwork. A fine set of concrete steps lead from the verandah to the garden.

ARCHITECTURE

Post War, Early Modern Bungalow 

No 22 Walter Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick house with a corrugated iron roof. There is a recent second storey addition to the rear. It is an expression of the Post-World War II Contemporary style. It is symmetrically composed with a full width skillion roofed verandah supported on steel columns. There is a central door flanked by windows. The original horizontal format timber windows and doors have been replaced with aluminium windows.
