ARCHITECTURE

Inter-War Arts & Crafts Bungalow

No 21 Stratford Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width return hip roof verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts set over rendered piers. The posts feature decorative post brackets. The roof is dominated by a weatherboard clad gable. The gable bay sits in front of the main roof’s gable. The gable bay features, weatherboard cladding and casement windows under a sunhood. The entrance door is located on the south elevation under the return verandah. The roofscape features finials. The place sits on limestone foundations.

1922 Donald S. Greenwood married Elsie Elizabeth Elsegood (1900-1969), Fremantle.

1935 Breach Of Licensing Act. Club Secretary Fined. The minimum penalty of £4, with 3/costs, was imposed on Donald Greenwood, secretary of the Buffalo Club, Fremantle, who was charged in the Fremantle police court yesterday, before Messrs. H. J. 1936 News Letter regarding ‘Young Grandmothers’ in Western Australia, to which Mrs. Elsie Greenwood, 21 Stratford St responded “My mother can certainly beat the Englishwoman's record, as a young grandmother, and I think she would be at least one of Western Australia's youngest grandmothers. When her grandson was born, she was 31 years and three months. Her name and address is Mrs. A. Maru of 17 Walter-street, East Fremantle. I remain Yours truly, E. Greenwood”… (reference)
