Federation Rustic Queen Anne Villa w Gothic Influences

No 19 Staton Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered masonry with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width bull-nosed roofed verandah. The verandah terminated at the gable bay is supported on timber posts. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a pair of double hung sash windows. The lower walls are rendered and the upper walls are limestone with brick quoins. The roofscape features a pair of tall render capped chimneys.

HISTORY

1907 Bankrupt. Harry Reed, fruiterer, at Boulder and Kalgoorlie, said that he owed £315 10s., and that his assets consisted of book debts (£13) and freehold property (valued at £12). He started business about February of last year, with about £1000. (reference)

No 21 Staton Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick house with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width return bull-nosed roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts. The verandah terminates on a gabled roof bay on the south elevation. There is a vertical timber balustrade and decorative frieze between the posts. The return verandah has been enclosed. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and pairs of double hung sashes. The walls are tuck-pointed brick with rendered string courses, sill and dressings.

HISTORY

1931 Accident. Cyclist Badly Hurt. Collision with Truck. About 11.30 this morning a bicycle ridden by Wallace Stewart (19), of 21 Staton-road. East Fremantle, collided with a motor truck in Canning-road, between the traffic bridge and the Richmond Hotel. Stewart was conveyed to the Fremantle Hospital, where his name was placed on the danger list. He has a probable fracture of the skull. Lionel Gillett, of 335 Hensman-road, Subiaco, the driver of the truck, informed the police that the injured man was troubled by a bag of tools he was carrying, and in an apparent endeavor to shift them swerved and collided with the truck, which was travelling in the opposite direction. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust bay and a part width bull-nosed roofed verandah. The verandah terminates at the gable bay and is supported on timber posts. The thrust bay features a brick bay window with three double hung sash windows. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a pair of double hung sash windows. The walls are limestone with brick quoins with rendered sills. There is a brick string course at sill height. The roofscape features a pair of rendered chimneys.

HISTORY

1933 Three Youthful Housebreakers. The young boys have admitted responsibility for the break in at 25 Staton Road. They pleaded guilty to breaking and entering and stealing 10/ in cash, a wrist watch, a pair of sleeve links and some handkerchiefs. Mr F. F. Horgan heard the case and put the boys on probation as well as ordering they make restitution for all they stole. (reference)

No 27 Staton Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone and painted brick with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a gable thrust bay and a part width return hip roof verandah. The verandah terminates at the gable bay is supported on timber posts. A vertical timber balustrade and a fretwork frieze spans between the posts. The fretwork was added after 2006. The gable bay features a set of multi pane windows and hopper lights. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and windows. The windows appear to have been modified to French doors with shutters. The place sits on limestone foundations.

No 28 Staton Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, tuck-pointed brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a very fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a gable bay and a full width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on paired timber posts with decorative brackets. The timber fretwork spans between the paired posts. The main roof features a prominent gable and a smaller gable bay in front. The gables feature vents and weatherboard cladding. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and paired double hung sash windows. The roof features ram’s horn finials and a set of tall rendered chimneys. The place sits on limestone foundations.

1926 Accident. The occupants of a motor car driven by Mrs. Douglas, of 28 Staton Road East Fremantle, had a narrow escape from serious injury yesterday afternoon. The car was crossing the intersection of High and Ord streets, Fremantle, when a tram car descending a steep hill in High-street crashed into it and pushed it along for nearly 19 yards. There are front doors either side of the party wall. The doors are flanked by single pane double hung sash windows. The roofscape features tall rendered chimneys. The walls are limestone with brick quoins.

1905 Threatened Litigation. Messrs Burt and Stone wrote, on behalf of Mrs Eva Bampton, complaining that the formation of certain gutters by the council had caused storm waters to run on her land and under her house. (reference)

HISTORY

1922 Damage estimated at £50, was caused to a motor lorry which was in collision with a tramcar in High-street Fremantle, on Thursday. The motor lorry was being driven from the premises of the Western Iron Works and the driver (George McCorkindale) was unable to stop it before a collision with a passing tram occurred. (reference)

1924 Traffic Prosecutions. Nine persons were charged with having committed various breaches of the Traffic Act, and fines ranging from 10s. to £1 were imposed. Municipal prosecution. Douglas J. Emery was charged with having commenced to erect a building before plans and specifications of the same had been approved of by the East Fremantle Municipal Council. He was fined. (reference)

The place has influences of the earlier Federation Filigree style. The place sits on a corner lot that addresses both Staton Road and Alcester Street. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width return skillion roof verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with decorative filigree work. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. The verandah terminates at both ends at gable bays. The front gable bay is part timbered with a louvered panel. The gable is set over a bay window with casement windows and a sunhood. There is a central door flanked by a corner suite. The windows have decorative sills. The roofscape features brick chimneys with rendered caps. The place sits on a limestone foundation.

Inter-War Bungalow w Federation Influences

No 38 Staton Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style with Federation Filigree influences. The place sits on a corner lot that addresses both Staton Road and Alcester Street. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width return skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. There is a decorative valance and a vertical timber balustrade between the posts. The house is elevated and on a sloping site. There is a long curved set of steps leading from the verandah to the garden. The verandah terminates at a thrust bay on the south side of the house. The entrance door is located on the south elevation under the return verandah. The front elevation features a set of casement windows and a hopper light and a roundel window. The lower walls are brick and upper walls rendered. The place sits on limestone foundations.

1914 Douglas Emery enlisted with the 11th Battalion A.I.F and participated in the landing at Gallipoli. (reference)

1922 The marriage of Miss Peggy Reeves youngest daughter of Mrs. and the late Mr. W. Reeves, 20 John-street, Fremantle, to Mr. Douglas Emery, M.M.. third son of Mr. and Mrs.Emery, of East Fremantle, was solemnised by the Rev. R. Hanlin, at Scots Church. Fremantle, recently. (reference)

1923 Dissolution of Partnership. The partnership of Douglas James Emery and Dennis Joseph Emery under the firm of “Emery Brothers” butchers in East Fremantle has been dissolved as of February 26. (reference)

1937 Hit by a Motor Van. Charles Alma Wallis was conveyed by St. John ambulance to Fremantle Hospital on May 21, where his name was placed on the danger list. He was walking along the road near the corner of Hammad and Carrington streets, Palmyra, when he was hit by the motor van which was driven by Douglas Emery, of Staton-road, East Fremantle. Unfortunately Wallis died three days later. (reference)

1937 No Evidence of Carelessness. On June 10, Douglas James Emery was cleared of any wrongdoing in the crash that took Charles Alma Wallis’s life. The matter was thoroughly investigated and witnesses questioned. (reference)

1937 Unregistered Dogs. On July 14, Douglas James Emery and Harold Edward O’Byrne were each cautioned and ordered to pay a fine of  £1 7s 9d in the Fremantle Police Court for having kept an unregistered dog. (reference)

No 49 Staton Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone and brick with hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width return hip roof verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and French double hung sash windows. The walls are painted limestone with painted brick quoins. A set of masonry steps leads from the verandah to the sidewalk. The roofscape features a pair of rendered chimneys.

HISTORY

The first real estate agent in Fremantle and founding member of the East Fremantle Bowling Club—John Twinem lived at 49 Staton Road, East Fremantle from 1913 to 1917. Read more about him under the Notable person section.

No 51 Staton Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is symmetrically composed with a full width skillion roof verandah. The original verandah timber posts have been replaced with steel posts with timber cladding. The timber flooring to the verandah has been replaced with concrete. A vertical steel balustrade spans between the posts. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a pair of bay windows. The bay windows features double hung sash windows. The half-timbered gables sit above the bay windows. These timber gables are later additions. Originally the verandah featured a central gable. The walls are limestone with rendered brick quoins. The roofscape features rendered chimneys.

1919 The case of Thos. Hearne v. Bartlett Day was before the acting R. M. in the Boulder Local Court on Wednesday. The claim, arising out of a promissory note, was originally dealt with in October, when the plaintiff was non-suited on the ground that the note had not been presented for payment at the bank mentioned at the foot or the note. The place is located on a corner lot and addresses both Staton Road and Salvado Avenue. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width hip roofed porch. The porch is supported on timber posts set over brick piers. A masonry balustrade and timber frieze span between the posts. The gabled thrust bays on both street elevations contain the porch. There is a central door flanked by a set of casement windows and a roundel window. The roofscape features a tall brick chimney.

1937 The funeral of the late Mrs. Josephine Polinelli, wife of Mr. Peter Polinelli, of 52 Staton-roads East Fremantle, took place yesterday afternoon. A Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Patrick's Church, Fremantle, at 9 a.m by the Rev. Father J. Weldon. The cortege moved from her late residence, 52 Staton-road, East Fremantle, the hearse being heavily laden with beautiful floral tributes, and proceeded to the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Fremantle, where the Rev. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a set of casement windows. The roofscape features a rendered chimneys and finials. The lower walls are rendered and the upper walls are face brick.

It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width bull-nosed roofed verandah. The verandah terminates at the gable bay and is supported on stop chamfered timber posts. The gable bay features a decorative trellis and a double hung sash window under a sunhood. The trellis appears to be a later addition. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The walls are limestone with brick quoins with rendered sills. The roofscape features stout brick chimneys.

1935 Nominations for Municipality. The following nominations hare been received for the vacancy In the East Ward of the North Fremantle Municipality:—Robert Bracks, Phillip Giles, William James Payne, and Henry John Howson. The seat was previously occupied by Mr. R. McKell, but it was declared vacant under section 41 of the Municipalities Act because Mr. McKell absented himself without leave from more than three consecutive meetings of the council. 1935 Burglary. The second burglary at Fremantle within three days took place on Monday night when a mixed goods shops, owned by Phillip Giles, was broken into and tobacco and cigarettes, valued about £20, were stolen. (reference)

1941 Auction on June 27, an auction was held on the premises of 60 Staton Road among the goods under the gavel were a plethora of furniture and a Humber Roadster motor car in good running order. (reference)

1943 Commendation. LAC (temp Sgt) John Edward Gough, of 60 Staton-road, East Fremantle, for bravery and initiative, N-W area. When an aircraft made a forced landing in swamp country 25 miles from the nearest station LAC Gough, a member of the security guards unit, obtained a very old and practically unseaworthy launch and together with a fitter and native guide set out to rescue the crew. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The place is located on a corner lot and addresses both Staton Road and Wolsely Road. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width return skillion roofed verandah. Each street elevation features a half-timbered gable bay. The verandah terminates at both bays. The verandah is supported on timber post with brackets. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. The gable bays feature pairs of double hung sash windows under sunhoods. There is a central door and hopper light flanked and sidelights and double hung sash windows. The walls are tuck-pointed brick with rendered string courses and sills. The roofscape features tall render capped chimneys. The place sits on limestone foundations.

HISTORY

1910 A Lady’s Heroism. On the 31st of May, Mrs. E. J. Brackenridge of Victoria Road, East Fremantle, helped save a young boy named Sharp from drowning. She stated that if it wasn’t for the assistance of Mr. J. Brown, an employee of the Castlemaine Brewery, both her and the boy would have drowned. (reference)

1932 Pedestrian Injured. On August 17, it is believed that William Burnside was driving the motor car that hit Arthur James Wright of 44 Duke Street, East Fremantle. The force of the car immediately pushed him into the path of a bus which ran over him. He was reported to be in critical condition. (reference)

1932 Inquest Results. September 1st, it is reported that the death of Arthur James Wright, whom William Burnside had struck with his car before being run over by a bus, was deemed an accidental death. Both William Burnside and the driver of the bus, Joseph Edward Lawson, described the accident in their own words. (reference)

1933 Death on 23rd December, at his residence, 62 Staton-road, East Fremantle, William, dearly beloved husband of Beatrice Adeline Burnside, and loving father of Hilda Kennedy and Beatrice Burnside. Age, 68 years. (reference)
