Read the biography of Ross Drabble (link) who was held in a Japanese Prisoner of War camp during WWll.

“My Name is Matthew Hanssen. I grew up and lived at 25 View Terrace with my brother Paul. We were raised by my grandparents Ross and Hilda Drabble. I believe they purchased the property in 1975 and my Grandfather sold it in 2005. My grandmother, passed away in June 1995 in the property, she was 82 at the time. I was born in 1973. The lady who bought the property in 2005, did a significant renovation on it at the time of purchase (including putting the solar panels on the roof). My grandmother named the property "Horizons". It was always painted white and had terracotta tiles on the roof. My grandmother purchased it off Colin Bower who owned a couple of properties around the area. My brother and I both went to Richmond Primary School. The original property, including 27 View Terrace went all the way from View Terrace to Pier Street. As I understand it, Colin Bower and our neighbour (Brenda Ballinghall at 27 View Terrace) subdivided the rear part and built the duplex that is at the rear of the property (The duplex that is on the corner of Pier Street and Easton Streets) for their parents (at the time). From the stories my grandmother told me- ach of the parents had one of the duplex halves.

We had a TV/games room with a bar, that was an extension on the original building. It also had a substantial concrete in-ground swimming pool. The rear access to the house was put in when the subdivision of the duplex at the rear went through. My grandmother subdivided- then built the property at 25A View Terrace at the front of the block. That was previously our front yard/lawn. We used to play cricket on it. They had the best garden in the street. But they subdivided it and sold it off to send me to a better school. The house they built was by AV Jennings.”

1925 Boys And The Land. To the Editor. Sir. The grave problem of the placing of boys and youths about to leave school has received the earnest consideration of the Parents and Citizens' Association for some time past, and the one solution suggested is the placing of boys on the land. Such a scheme, if practicable, would present a threefold advantage, for it would assist the youth to attain, eventually, a measure of independence, relieve such parents whose financial position does not permit of their articling or apprenticing their sons and finally benefit the State by developing citizens of a responsible and healthy type. That such a solution is practicable is the contention of Mr. T. Chandler, headmaster of the Perth Boys' School, and "Cares and Ambitions" are advised to attend a meeting of citizens to be held in the Fremantle Town Hall on August 6, at 8 p.m., when this scheme will be explained and discussed. 1930 Sheep In An Ice-Cart. Prosecution Fails. In the Fremantle Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. A. E. Pady and A. P. Hamilton, Albert Wyndham Walker pleaded not guilty to a charge of having permitted a vehicle, used to transport food, to be used for the transport of offensive matter. Health Inspector Dow prosecuted and Mr. L. A. Coleman appeared for the defendant. The evidence for the prosecution was that, on May 22, a lorry bearing the name of Walker and Holmes, Ltd., loaded a number of live sheep at the West Australian Meat Works, at Robb's Jetty, and later picked up some ice from the freezing chamber. The sheep, which were alleged to be in an offensive condition were loaded in with the ice. Mr. Coleman submitted that the charge had not been proved as ice was not a food as defined by the Health Act, and the prosecution had not proved that the defendant was actually connected with the firm of Walker and Holmes, Ltd. The case was dismissed. (reference)

1934 Meat For The Fleet. Local Butcher’s Contract. The contract for the supply of meat for the crews of the ships H.M.S. Sussex and H.M.A.S. Canberra, Australia and Moresby during their sojourn in Fremantle has been secured by Messrs Walker & Holmes Ltd., wholesale and shipping butchers of Fremantle. The contract provides for the supply of the first quality beef, mutton, lamb, pork and veal. Some 2,000 men will be provided for. A feature of these contracts is the insistence upon only the best meat being supplied, three officers being specially appointed to supervise the matter and submit the supplies to a very careful examination. The firm of Walker and Holmes have no fears in this direction, however, it being their policy to supply only the best. It is gratifying to know of the part played by a local firm in this direction, the order having been secured in the face of keen competition from other butchers. (reference)

F. Payne. Despite cold, stormy weather, a big gathering assembled, and each guest brought a parcel of writing material to be forwarded on to the soldiers at the front. By request, writing pads, pencils and envelopes were brought, and of these there was a generous supply-for which the hostesses of the afternoon desire to thank all friends. (reference)

December 7, 1915. Dear Madam, I have to acknowledge with many thanks the receipt of the parcels of stationery donated at the gift afternoon. The case arrived in the nick of time, as everyone was horribly short of writing paper.
