Federation Bungalow

No. 9 (previously was no. 21) Glyde street is a single storey house constructed of limestone and brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It was adapted in the immediate Post-World War II period but has since been restored to reflect the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by windows. The facade features a full width bullnosed roofed verandah supported by timber posts on a concrete floor.

HISTORY

Boat builder Alfred (Alf) Tilley, his wife, three sons and three daughters lived in this house. Born in Hobart in 1869 Tilley did his apprenticeship with his father who was a senior partner of Tilley and Williams. Tilley went to Melbourne at 20 where he married Susan, and 20 years later came to Western Australia, in 1895. In 1911 he established the firm of A. E. Tilley and Co (steamer and launches ) and started a boat service in the harbor and for up-river trade. His boat building business and boat shed operated for more than 30 years. One of the more famous boats built by him was the Mayans. Tilley died aged 65 years in 1993.

1949 Sons challenge the will of Mrs. Susan J Tilley. She had made three wills in the previous ten years (since the death of Alfred) The last will (signed in 1944) left everything to her two surviving daughters Lily French and Isabel Banks and nothing to the sons. Not surprisingly, the sons challenged this on the grounds that their mother was of unsound mind when making the will, and claim that it  was obtained by ‘undue influence.’’ (reference)

1949 The Judge rules in favour of the daughters in the will dispute. He rules that the will made in 1944 was in fact valid. Interestingly, Alfred Tilley junior withdrew as a defendant on the morning of the hearing commencement and gave evidence that the final 1944 will was valid. The defendants (sons) were ordered to pay their own costs and the plaintiffs’ (daughters’) costs could be paid out of the deceased estate. (reference

HISTORY

In September 1883 Stephen Henry Parker and James Morrison of Perth commenced subdivision of 65 acres of land to the north of Canning Road. The subdivision occurred at Swan Locations 63, 176, 219 and the south western portion of Swan Location 306. The subdivision included Preston Point Road, Alcester Gardens, Wolsely Gardens, Victoria Road, Alexandra Road, Parry Avenue, and Salvado Avenue.
The Richmond Precinct was owned by Walter Easton and was named after the town of Richmond where Easton lived in England. In 1901 Easton’s sons subdivided Windsor Estate. New streets to the subdivision of the Windsor Estate were named after various members of the Easton family; Walter, Gill, Stratford and Morgan (later Osborne Road).
Initially lot sizes were generous but sold at a slow rate. The initial development of the Richmond Precinct occurred at Canning Highway and Preston Point Road. Substantial residences were developed on these streets giving precedence to the future development of Richmond. The distinct architecture of Canning Highway and Preston Point Road distinguish Richmond from the surrounding area.
By 1913 there were approximately 40 residences in the area between Preston Point Road and Alexandra Road. Osborne Road, Windsor Road and Gill Street had several buildings apiece by 1913. By 1931 approximately half the lots were developed. In 1921 Richmond Primary School was developed between Windsor and Osborne Road and several Inter-War residences were developed in the immediate area. In the 1930s the Workers’ Homes’ Board developed a number of weatherboard, asbestos, brick and tiled residences. Inter-War style front porches were preferred over Federation style full width verandahs.
Redevelopments have occurred throughout the Richmond Precinct. Large lot sizes have allowed Richmond to be subject to the redevelopment of group and multiple housing. However, significant clusters of heritage dwellings remain throughout.

ARCHITECTURE

Inter-War Californian Bungalow

No 9 Walter Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick house with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War California Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust bay and a part width gable roofed porch. The porch is supported on square columns set over limestone piers. A rendered brick balustrade spans between the piers. The half-timbered bay features a set of casement windows and a corner suite under sunhoods. There is a front door under the porch flanked by casement windows. The place sits on limestone foundations. The lower walls are face brick and the walls are rendered above sill level. The roofscape features rendered chimneys.
The place retains its form and most of its details. The original tiled roof has been replaced with corrugated iron sheeting.

ARCHITECTURE

An asymmetrical single storey residence, with a projecting northeast wing to the front facade and a skillion roofed verandah running the remainder of the facade. The brick walls were once tuck pointed but are now rendered. It appears the house was substantially altered not long after it was built including the addition of the wing which gives it its asymmetrical form. The additions show some characteristics of a simplified Federation Queen Anne style. The adjoining corner site once featured a block of three shops that were demolished post 1995.

HISTORY

1915 Obituary: By the death of Mr. Adam William Armstrong formerly of H.M. Customs, Fremantle which occurred last week, at his residence, ‘Gilmore’, Canning Road, East Fremantle, in his 63rd year, there has been removed a very old colonist of this State. Mr Armstrong was born at Fremantle, and has resided at the port all his life, with the exception of six years in Geraldton, where he was employed by Messrs H. Gray and Co. He was well-known and highly respected, and was a Customs officer for 18 years, up to two years ago, when he retired owing to indifferent health.
