No 14 Irwin Street is a single-storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a good expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part-width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on Tuscan columns. The gable bay features a set of casement windows under a sunhood.

Inter-War Bungalow Porch House

No 14 Windsor Road ‘Knockdrin” is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. A couple of extensions have been completed since 1986. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width hip roofed verandah. The verandah follows the plan of the building and is supported on Tuscan columns set over piers. A brick balustrade spans between the piers. The verandah has a gable located over the entry which reflects California Bungalow style. The facade features casement windows. The roofscape features finials. The place sits on limestone foundations. The walls are face brick with rendered features.

Interwar Bungalow Porch House

No 14 Oakover Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Porch style with some modifications. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a gabled roof porch. The porch is supported on square columns set on piers. A rendered balustrade spans between the piers. The half-timbered gable bay features a window and a sunhood. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and another set of windows. The windows are replacements. The place retains its form and most of its details. There is a two storey addition to the rear and a garage to the south. The original tiled roof has been replaced with corrugated iron sheeting.

1936 Marriage. Mrs. Doig was formerly Miss Norma Butler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Butler, of Holland-street, Fremantle, the bridegroom, Mr. Bill Doig, is the second son of Mrs. M. The front elevation was symmetrically planned with a central gabled roof porch and sweeping barges set on masonry piers. An addition has been added to the west making the elevation asymmetrical. There is a central door flanked by casement windows. The windows are protected by tiled sunhoods. A garage has been built to the boundary on the west elevation. The roofscape features finials.

HISTORY

Research on the history of this property is currently under way by the Museum of Perth in partnership with the Town of East Fremantle.

No 14 Walter Street is a single storey house constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width return hip roof verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with a timber and fibrous cement balustrade between posts. The majority of the verandah has been enclosed with glazed louvres. The thrust bay features a double hung sash window under a sunhood. There is a central door flanked by single pane double hung windows. The roofscape features a brick chimney.

It is a good example of a Federation Bungalow style house partly restyled in the Inter-War period. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by picture windows with casement and awning lights. The facade features a full width bullnose roof verandah supported on timber posts.

1935 Stone Jetty. History Sought of a Swan River Landmark. A few weeks ago Mr. N. Mauger, of Datatine via Katanning, wrote seeking the history of Stone Jetty, situated in the Swan River, near Rocky Bay. The matter was referred to Mr. F. I Bray, of the State Archives Board, and that gentleman wrote to several old residents asking for information. Mr. T. E. Groves, of 14 George-street. East Fremantle, was one of the gentlemen appealed to and he replied as follows:—"I remember the Jetty 60 years ago. It comprised a few logs held together by stone. Whitfield Bros. used to cart the cap stone to the end of the road and it was wheeled in barrows along the jetty into boats-flats we used to call them-and it was taken to Perth for road-making. In later years the jetty was built up to take the oyster shell for road-making at Point Walter. I believe what we called Stone-road, which led to the jetty, is called Shell-road now.” (reference)

No. 14 (previously was no. 26) East street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a simplified expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gabled bay complete with polygonal bay, windows and deep barges. The facade features a bullnosed roofed verandah on masonry piers. A masonry wall has been built at the verandah edge.

1935 Accident Witness Wanted. The Fremantle branch of Traffic Department is anxious to get in touch with persons who witnessed an accident in High-street, Fremantle, near Union Stores Ltd., about 5.30 p.m. on Thursday last. According to information supplied to the police, Doris Chuck (16) of 26 East-street, Fremantle, was crossing High-street, when she was supposed to have been struck by a motor car. An earlier report indicated that a push cyclist has been concerned in the accident. No 14 Stratford Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, tuck-pointed brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War California Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust bay and a part width hip roofed porch. The porch is supported on tapered columns set over rendered piers. A rendered balustrade spans between the piers. The thrust bay features a set of three double hung sash windows under a tiled awning. There is a central door flanked by a further set of windows. The place sits on limestone foundations. The lower walls are tuck-pointed brick and the upper walls are rendered. There are brick string courses and soldier course detailing. A set of stairs leads from the porch to the garden. The roofscape features a rendered chimney and finials.

HISTORY

1933 Fire At East Fremantle. The kitchen of a six-roomed house at 81 (sic) Stratford Street, East Fremantle, owned and occupied by Mr. Arthur Rossell was severely damaged by fire shortly before 2 p.m. today. The outbreak was caused by an electric iron which had been left with the current switched on. At the time of the fire, which was extinguished with a garden hose, the occupants were absent. No. 14 (previously was no. 20) Marmion street is a single storey house constructed in rendered masonry with a hipped tiled roof. The place is a residence in the Federation Bungalow Style with later modifications. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with an offset entry door flanked by a double hung sash window. The door is recessed in an arched entry on the west side. The facade features a full width hip roofed verandah supported on Tuscan columns mounted on masonry piers. The verandah appears to be a replacement. A parapet wall runs along the west lot boundary.

HISTORY

1918 Lumpers and Lash. "Dinkums" and "Gnashionalists". Jury Decide Twas a Fair Fight And Return Verdict of Acquittal...Oscar Alfred Carlson, a member of the Lumpers Union, said Wilkie was a "Bit Of A Nagger." He and Wilkie had a few words, "both swearing up a bit," and Captain Thomas told them to keep quiet. (reference)
1928 Oscar Alfred Carlson. A Fremantle wharf lumper petitioner in the Carlson divorce case. His principal grounds of divorce were that his wife came home late from dances continuously after being married to him 13 years. (reference)

1939 Motorist Fined Drove 'Under Influence' Oscar Carlson (49), waterside worker, was fined and was disqualified from holding a driver's licence for 12 months, when he appeared before the Perth Police Court, on a charge he drove a motor car south along Canning highway, near Berwick street, South Perth, while he was so far under the influence of liquor as to be incapable of having proper control of the vehicle. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style that has been restored in the 21st Century. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah supported on timber posts. The verandah is a replacement. There is a carport on the south side of the house.

ARCHITECTURE

Federation / Inter-War, Federation Bungalow

No 14 Dalgety Street is a single-storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah features a gabled roof over the entrance. The verandah is supported on circular columns on masonry piers. There is a vertical timber balustrade between the piers. The entry door is to the north and is flanked by sets of double hung windows.

HISTORY

1937 Coming-of-Age Party. To celebrate the coming-of-age of their daughter Elsie, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Truscott, of Dalgety-street, East Fremantle, entertained a number of their friends at the Masonic Hall, East Fremantle last Tuesday evening. The guests enjoyed games and dancing to a late hour. Mrs. Truscott chose a gown of grey crepe de chine and lace whilst Miss. Elsie Truscott wore a frock of floral crepe de chine. (reference)
1938 Truscott Seeks New Role W. J. ("Nipper") Truscott, one of the outstanding football identities of all time, is a candidate for the secretaryship of the South Fremantle Club. Since his brilliant playing career ended Mr. Truscott has been prominent as a State selector. Although Mr. Truscott was already a champion on the goldfields it was with the East Fremantle Club that he achieved his greatest feats, among them representing W.A. in five carnivals. He is the only player with that distinction. It is a coincidence that his nephew, one of South's most brilliant players, transferred to that club from East Fremantle. A last-minute effort was made to persuade the retiring secretary Mr. P. C. Winch to reconsider his decision, and Mr. Truscott and Mr. Harrison would have withdrawn had he done so. There will also be an election for the committee. The ballot, in which keen interest will be taken, will be open at the shop of Mr. F. Yench, in High-street, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday and in the clubrooms prior to the meeting that night. (reference)
1939 South Fremantle Club. Applications for the positions of trainers and a property man for the 1939 season are invited by the South Fremantle League Football Club and should be submitted to the secretary (Mr. W. J. Truscott), Dalgety-street, East Fremantle, by February 20. (reference)
1943 Challenges Football Record. Mr. W. J. ("Nipper") Truscott, of East Fremantle, W.A., claims he has a much better football record than that of Mr. Ernie Beller, of Coogee. Mr. Beller recently claimed an all-code Australian record. He has played 358 first-grade matches. Mr. Truscott has written stating that he appeared in 474 first-grade Australian Rules games. This includes 420 games in the Western Australian League and 32 inter-state games. He is the only player who has played football in five interstate carnivals. Mr. Truscott was also an interstate cricketer, retiring at the age of 52 He is now 57. (reference)
1945 Football Record-Holder Now Plays Bowls. Football records of Frank Jenkins who played his 100th game with South Fremantle last Saturday, Doug Oliphant (205 games) and Ted Tyson (226 games) and still playing with Perth and West Perth respectively, pale into insignificance when compared with the record of W. J. ("Nipper") Truscott. Fifty-nine and a postal assistant at Fremantle, “Nipper's” only sporting activity now is bowls, but behind him is a record of 21 seasons of first-class football. He played in nearly 500 games. From 1907 to 1912 at a time when goldfields football challenged in quality and importance the football on the coast, he played just over 100 games with Mines Rover. In 1913 he commenced with East Fremantle and retired in 1927 at the age of 41. In those 15 years he played more than 300 games not including between 20 and 30 semi-finals and finals. He figured in twelve interstate club games and created an Australian record by appealing in five carnivals (22 matches). When he captained a W.A. side in 1921 this State won. "Nipper" Truscott played cricket even longer than football, retiring at 52. He was an all-rounder, made two centuries on the goldfields, moderate scores on the coast, and secured wickets, with his right-hand slows. His son, now in the Army and named "Nipper" after his father, played football for some seasons, and was in the 1937 carnival side. (reference)
1946 'Nipper' Truscott Retires Today- Former champion League footballer W. J. ("Nipper") Truscott retired from the P.M.G. Department today and with his wife will leave on a holiday trip to the Eastern States next week. He had served with the department for 46 years, the last 23 at Fremantle. Mr. Truscott was attached to the registration section of the Postal Department at Fremantle and was today farewelled by the staff, who made him a presentation. Transferred from the Goldfields in 1912, Mr. Truscott was unable to play with East Fremantle that season as his clearance had not come through, but he toured and played with Old Easts in the Eastern States that year. In 1913 he started his successful career with East Fremantle, a career which climaxed with his selection as captain of the West Australian eighteen which won the Australian football carnival in Perth in 1921. 1953 Western Australian visitor to Adelaide during the carnival in July may be W. J. ("Nipper") Truscott, former WA State and carnival star. Mr. L. Phillips, of Westbourne Park, has just returned from a visit to Perth bearing Truscott's regards to all old friends including Billy Mayman, who was a team mate of Truscott's in the Mines Rovers club on the gold fields in the early 1900's. "Nipper," who played in five carnivals, claims Marjorie Jackson's home town (Lithgow) as his birthplace and retired from league football in 1927 when 41 after 15 years with East Fremantle. During that time he was never out of the State side. (reference)

Bungalow Porch house w Federation Influences

No 14 Gill Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on Tuscan columns set over piers. A curved top balustrade spans between the piers. The gable bay features a set of double hung sash windows. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by side lights and sets of windows.
The place retains its form and most of its details. There are additions to the rear.
The place is consistent with the building pattern in the Precinct. The place plays an important role in the pattern of development of a middle class suburb.

Federation, Georgian Influences

No. 14 (previously was no. 34) Hubble street is a single storey cottage constructed in masonry with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is an expression of the Federation Cottage Bungalow style. The place has been extensively modified in the twenty-first century. It is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by side lights and double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah supported on masonry piers. A low masonry wall spans between the piers.

1917 Mrs. M. Treloar, of 34 Hubble-street, East Fremantle, has received word from the military authorities that her son, Gunner Cecil Treloar, has been wounded while fighting in France. (reference)
