ARCHITECTURE

Early Federation/ Georgian Influences/ Ethnic Adaption

No. 2 (previously no. 14) East Street is a single-storey house constructed in rendered masonry with a hipped, tiled roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style overlaid with a Post-World War II Immigrant Nostalgia refurbishment. The front elevation was originally symmetrically planned. The facade now has a centrally placed front door with a picture window to the north and French doors to the south. A flat, concrete-roofed verandah replaces the original verandah. The verandah is supported on steel posts with a wrought steel balustrade over a concrete floor.

It is a good expression of the Federation Bungalow style applied to a duplex. The facade features a skillion roofed verandah on timber posts. The verandah extends the full width of the house with a frieze at the tops of the posts. The adjoining 8-10 East Street residences are identical.

1906 In Memoriam. In loving remembrance of my dear daughter, Maggie, who departed this life at 16 East-street, Fremantle, on October 9, 1905. Loved by all who knew her. A precious one from as is gone, A voice we loved is stilled, A place is vacant in our home, Which never can be filled.—Inserted by her sorrowing mother and sisters, Mrs. McInnes. (reference)

1908 Rorty Old Rees ...The charge against them was that of having conspired to procure a woman for the purpose of prostitution. And the most horrible feature of the case is that the woman was the wife of the muchly monnickered Devenish. He is a young man of about 25, with a wealth of reddish hair. For some considerable time he was a porter at the Fremantle railway station...Letter written by J. E. Devenish. On January 18 the muchly named Devenish was arrested on the charge upon which he was committed for trial. The next day his wife wrote the following letter to him in gaol: 16 East-street, E. 1909 News And Notes. …The Oratorical Efforts of a Married Couple.—Yesterday morning Emma Farrant and Walter Farrant, a married couple, pleaded not guilty at the Police Court, Fremantle, when a charge of having disturbed the peace of their immediate neighbourhood by the use of obscene language was read against them…Both parties gave evidence in denial, of the charge, pleading that they were not swearing as stated when the constables arrived, but were merely "sitting together on the back doorstep at 1 a.m., having a sing-song." In cross examination neither of the pair could off-hand recall the words nor yet the melody, and an unsympathetic Bench imposed a collective penalty… (reference)

1910 Was She Kissed? The Married Woman And The Married Man Engage In Conversation. A natty little woman named Emma Farrant stepped into the box at the Fremantle Police Court this morning, and before Mr. E. P. Dowley, pleaded not guilty to having, on Saturday last, solicited for the purposes of prostitution. She bore the remains of youthful winsomeness, and was dressed in black, save a light scarlet scarf, thrown round her neck. Constable Richardson stated that he saw accused accosting men in South Terrace, on Saturday afternoon last, and she proceeded up Henderson street with one of them. 1913 Loitering. Two frayed females named , Lilly Crocker and Emma Farrant were charged with having loitered in High street for immoral purposes. Crocker pleaded not guilty, and Farrant guilty. Both were old offenders. Crocker was sent to gaol for 14 days and Farrant was awarded a similar penalty. (reference)

1939 Lockjaw Victim. Boy’s Life in Danger. Although little hope is felt for his recovery every effort is being made to save the life of Norman Grove (4), of East street, Fremantle. His name has been on the danger list at the Fremantle Hospital since his admission on Friday afternoon suffering from lockjaw, the result of a tetanus infection in his right foot. The boy sustained a cut on his foot several days ago and later complained of a stiffness in his jaw. The stiffness rapidly became worse. Yesterday. although quite conscious, he was unable to speak as his jaws were completely locked and the child could merely gaze in silence about him in the ward. Late last night his condition was reported to be unchanged. When the boys mother died two years ago he became a favourite with all his neighbours and many inquiries have been received about him at the hospital. "He is a lovely little fellow," declared one of the doctors at the hospital, "and he has become the idol of everyone." (reference)

Alfred Ronald Fry was born in 1922. He was considered a neglected child and fined for ‘busking’ in Perth Children’s court for 6 months during 1939. Sent to an institution until he was 18.

1950 Alfred Ronald Fry (26), labourer, of East-street. East Perth, was fined £5 with 2/6 costs. It was stated that Fry twice walked up to a group of men in State-street, Victoria Park, on Monday when he saw the constables approaching. The men, who were suspected of being engaged in betting, then dispersed. On the third occasion the constables were able to get, much closer to Fry before he identified them. Fry whistled twice and the group of men again dispersed. (reference)

1950 Backroom Dice Game Raided. For having kept a gaming house at East Fremantle on January 20, a man was fined £25 in Fremantle Police Court today and 10 others were fined a total of £27 for haying been found on the premises. The man fined as keeper is labourer Alfred Ronald Fry (27), of East St., East Fremantle. All pleaded guilty except one man whose excuse of having gone to the house to play bridge was rejected by the Bench. Plainclothes-Constable Harper said that the men were playing dice in a backroom. The back door was locked and a blanket was hung over the window. (reference)

1950 House He Used For Gambling Is Lost. A tenant of a house at 6 East-st, Fremantle, must give up possession to the owner on or before June 3. This decision was given in Fremantle Local Court yesterday when an application by Barbara Helen Wyatt of Rockingham to recover the house from Alfred Ronald Fry was Granted. (reference)

1937 Elderly Man Dies in Hospital. Struck by a bicycle as he was crossing Queen Victoria-street, Fremantle, about 8 a.m. yesterday, an elderly man was thrown to the ground and received severe injuries to his head. He died at the Fremantle Hospital shortly after noon. The bicycle was ridden by James Godfrey Petersen, of 22 East-Street, Fremantle. The victim was: "Hartree, Alfred George (65), of Beach street, Fremantle, fracture or the skull and cerebral haemorrhage. Hartree was walking across Queen Victoria-street, near Burt-street, to where his son had pulled up his motor truck. As he was about to pass in front of his son's truck, Petersen's bicycle, which was overtaking the truck, struck him and threw him heavily to the ground. He was taken to the Fremantle Hospital... No. 12 (previously was no. 24) East street is a single storey house constructed in rendered masonry with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style overlaid with a Post-World War II Immigrant Nostalgia. The tiled roof was replaced post 2006 with corrugated iron. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central front door flanked by windows. The facade features a hipped verandah supported on timber posts.

Federation Villa with Queen Anne Influences.

No. 14 (previously was no. 26) East street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a simplified expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gabled bay complete with polygonal bay, windows and deep barges. The facade features a bullnosed roofed verandah on masonry piers. A masonry wall has been built at the verandah edge.

1935 Accident Witness Wanted. The Fremantle branch of Traffic Department is anxious to get in touch with persons who witnessed an accident in High-street, Fremantle, near Union Stores Ltd., about 5.30 p.m. on Thursday last. According to information supplied to the police, Doris Chuck (16) of 26 East-street, Fremantle, was crossing High-street, when she was supposed to have been struck by a motor car. An earlier report indicated that a push cyclist has been concerned in the accident. Miss Chuck was yesterday admitted to Fremantle Hospital suffering from head injuries and was detained for treatment. (reference)

1936 Beach Episode. Four Youths Charged. Detectives Deny ‘Third Degree’ An occurrence at Leighton beach on the night of December 27 last led to the appearance of four young men. Before Mr. Justice Draper and a jury In the Criminal Court yesterday. Mervyn Austin Cordingly (19), Eric John Beard (19), Arthur Charles Dearle (22), and Alfred Joseph Houlahan (20), were charged conjointly with having committed rape on a 17-year-old girl. All of the accused pleaded not guilty. The prosecution was conducted by the Crown Prosecutor (Mr. C. B. Gibson)....William Sim McGillivray, Government Bacteriologist, told of having examined certain stained articles of a woman's clothing on December 31 last. During April last an employee of the Harbour Trust named John' George Wrightson while, according to the evidence for the plaintiffs, in the execution of his duties was run down and killed by a passenger train on the North Fremantle railway river bridge. The plaintiffs to the suit yesterday were Bridget Wrightson, Mervyn Wrightson (12), Leslie Wrightson (5), and Doris Wrightson (3), wife and children respectively of the deceased, and they sought compensation under the provisions of the Act… (reference)

1941 Soldier Dies For Family. Sapper Erwin James (Bill) Burrell, of 52 East-street, Fremantle, who has been officially reported killed in action, was most anxious to enlist. Although 35 years of age, married and with three children, he declared to Mrs. Burrell: "No single man will fight for my kids." Her predominant thoughts today, she said, were of the supreme sacrifice made by her husband, the thoughtful gesture of his workmates from the Fremantle Harbour Trust (who provided comforts for the family at Christmas) and the shock she received yesterday. "A telegraph boy arrived," she said. "I opened the wire, my thoughts sensing that Bill had been wounded. But it was the worst, and, not being prepared, I simply collapsed... (reference)

'Bill' Burrell, formerly of the goldfields, was the first West Australian soldier killed in action in the Libyan campaign, writes expressing her thanks to all those goldfields friends who sent her telegrams, cards and letters of condolence. 1931 Obituary. The late Mrs. Florence Emma Jones, wife of Mr Edwin Jones, of 82 East-street, East Fremantle, died on Saturday last. The deceased was born at Adelaide, South Australia, and came to Western Australia 37 years ago. She lived at North Fremantle for many years, and for the last 12 years had resided at East Fremantle. The late Mrs. Jones had always been an earnest church worker, and was a member of the Baptist churches at South and East Fremantle. She was of bright and cheerful disposition, charitable and always considerate for others. She leaves a husband, one son and three daughters, a mother, brother and four sisters to mourn their loss. 1925 Shooting Tragedy. Young Man Killed. News of a fatal shooting accident at Wubin, near Dalwallinu, was received by Mr. H. H. Parker, the town clerk of East Fremantle, by telephone yesterday. The first intimation of the occurrence was supplied through the central railway stations at 11 o'clock on Saturday night, which asked Mr. Parker to inform William Heal that his son, William, had been accidentally shot in the head at Dalwallinu, and was in a critical condition. Unable to locate Mr. Heal, the town clerk communicated with the Fremantle police, who traced Mr. William Heal, sen., at 86 East street, East Fremantle. (reference)

1928 Letter To Aunty Nell. …Camelia Ellett, 86 East-street. East Fremantle: “It is a long time since I wrote to you, and I hope you have not forgotten me. Since I last wrote we have got ten ducks, the drakes of which are an enormous size. On Anzac Day we all went to the service and opening of the monument in High-street, where all the soldiers and sailors, played their bugles and band. Archbishop Riley and Sir William Campion came from Perth to address the service. They stood near a kind of loud-speaker, so that when they spoke the echo of their voices went into the opening, and the people could hear what the men who addressed the meeting were saying more distinctly. Did you go away for the week's vacation in April? I did not. but my brother Ernest went to Penguin Island with the cubs: he is the second head boy cub in Fremantle. He has been in the cubs for twelve months, and has two stars, six badges, and a service star; he has the most badges in Fremantle; therefore, he carries the totem pole, and is sixer of the purple set of cubs…’’ (reference)

1926 Obituary. Mr. George Williams, the oldest employee of the firm of Messrs. Robert Harper and Co., Ltd., Fremantle, died suddenly on the 18th inst., at his late residence, 88 East street, East Fremantle. The deceased, who was 70 years of age, was born at Bendigo, Victoria, in which State he lived for 20 years. Mr. Williams went to South Australia, and lived there principally in Adelaide, for a period of 18 years. He was connected with Robert Harper and Co., Ltd. in South Australia, and 32 years ago, was transferred to their Fremantle branch, where he had been ever since. (reference)
