ARCHITECTURE

Late Victorian / Federation, Domestic Carpenter

No. 79 (previously was no. 161) Sewell street is a single story cottage constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding walls with a hipped corrugated iron roof. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah supported on timber posts. The roof features a large capped chimney stack.

1911 Cocoanut (sic) Pudding. Ingredients: Two slices of stale bread, 1 pint of milk, 1oz. butter, 2 eggs, 2oz. desiccated cocoanut. Method: Butter the bread, cut into small square pieces and fill up a piedish with alternate layers of bread and butter and cocoanut. Keep back about a teaspoonful of cocoanut and color it pale pink with one or two drops of carmin or cochineal. Beat the yolks of the eggs, add the milk, pour over the ingredients in the piedish, and bake in a moderate oven for 30 minutes. Whisk the whites of the eggs to a very stiff froth, pile it on the pudding, replace it in the oven for a few minutes to set, then sprinkle it with the pink cocoanut.— Mrs. Bentick 161 Sewell-street, East Fremantle. 1915 Western Australian Casualties. Mrs. J. B. Scott, of 161 Sewell-street, East Fremantle, has received cable information that her husband, Major J. B. Scott, of the 10th Light Horse Regiment was killed in action at the Dardanelles on October 8. Major Scott was for many years a member of the Launceston (Tasmania) Artillery, where he first served as a gunner, and worked his way up to the rank of captain. ...Major Scott was well known at Katanning, where he and his brother, Lieutenant E. 1931 The Late Mr. Frederick Henry Ward died at his residence… The deceased was born at Gordon, Tasmania, and was a son of the late Mr. William Ward, an old pioneer of the Gordon district. The late Mr. F. H. Ward was for several years in the civil service in that State and held many responsible positions. He came to Western Australia in 1911, and, until his retirement three ago, was a well-known identity in assurance circles. He was a man of high ideals, esteemed for his business integrity, and, during his long and varied career, made many friends. (reference)

HISTORY

Edmund Harry Gray (1878–1964) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1923 to 1952, representing West Province. Gray arrived in South Australia from England  in 1898. In 1910 he moved to Western Australia, and for eight years farmed near Tambellup. He then moved to Fremantle, becoming a tally clerk on the Fremantle Wharf. Gray served on the East Fremantle Municipal Council from 1927 to 1946 and during this time was elected to the Legislative Council on four occasions (in 1926, 1932, 1938, and 1946). He lived at 5 Bolton Street, East Fremantle from 1926-1954.

1929 Cr. E. H. Gray, M.L.C., announced at last night's meeting of the East Fremantle Council that the Infant Health Centre, which had been formed to cater for the East Fremantle, and North Fremantle municipalities, and the Melville Road Board area, would be officially opened by the Minister for Health (Mr. Munsie) on July 7… the organisation had been formed as a result of a conference between Government representatives and local authorities. The Government had granted a subsidy of £100, and the three local authorities had each made a grant of £25 towards the movement. The East Fremantle Council had also granted the use of a room with all conveniences for the use of the clinic. The centre had been fortunate in obtaining the services of Sister Kidson-Hunter, who would be in charge of its activities. The council expressed its satisfaction at the report submitted. (reference)

1929 New Infant Health Centre. The Minister for Health (Mr. S. W. Munsie) will open the new Melville-North Fremantle and East Fremantle infant welfare centre on Sunday afternoon. The function will take place in the East Fremantle Town Hall at 3 p.m. and the mayor Mr. H. J. Locke) will preside. (reference)

1934 Infant Health Centre. During the last few weeks infant health organisations all over W.A.have been holding their annual meetings. The Fremantle committee held their annual gathering at the Town Hall, Fremantle, on Tuesday, July 24. Mr. J. B. Sleeman, M.L.A., was in the chair. A welcome visitor was Mr. W. Farrell, from the Fremantle Trotting Club, who brought along a cheque for £20 for the Fremantle Centre and £10 for the Melville North-East Fremantle Centre as donations from the Trotting Club. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Farrell for his attendance, and the Trotting Club for their generous donations. The following officers were elected: President: Mr. J. B. Sleeman, M.L.A, Vice-Presidents: Mrs. M. Smith, Mr. G. Fraser, M.L.C.. Crs. J. M. Farrell, W. J: Griffith, E. Swinbourn, and P. G. McMahon, Hon. Secretary and Treasurer: E.H. Gray, M.L.C. Delegate to Infant Health Association: Mrs. E. Pengilley.

The president read the annual report as follows: "The work of the Centre has progressed satisfactorily during the year and Sister Salmon has carried out an enormous amount of labor, to the great advantage of the mothers and babies of Fremantle. This Centre is the second largest in the State being second to the Centre in the City of Perth. The statistics for the year speak for themselves and show in a graphic manner the big work Sister Salmon is successfully carrying on. "Births reported for the year were 272; new babies visited, 189; new babies attended Centre, 265; total number of babies attending Centre, 557; total attendances of babies at Centre, 5273; total number of visits paid to households, 612; total consultations regarding expectant mothers, 120; total consultations, including thereby correspondence, 5885. 1927 Date Loaf: Take 2 cupfuls of self-raising flour, 1 cupful of dates, about ½lb. (¾-cupful) milk, 1 egg, ½ cupful of sugar, 1 tablespoonful butter, and a pinch of salt. Early Federation, Georgian / Gothic Influences

No. 80 (previously was no. 116) East street is a single storey duplex constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped ‘M’ format iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a skillion roofed front verandah. Entry doors are equally offset from the party wall. The doors are flanked by windows. Tapered masonry walls extend from the duplex to the boundary. These walls enclose the front yard and divide the dwellings.

Alexander Dow Cowan (1890 - 1929) (Neptune Oil) A brilliant businessman A.D.Cowan could see the potential to build the Neptune Oil Company in Fremantle. He joined the company at 18 and was Manager by the age of 22. He oversaw the growth of the business despite a massive fire which destroyed its yards in 1928. Sadly this was also the year he died- a life cut short at 38 years old. Alex, at 21, married Ethel Maria Pettersen in 1911, and fathered two sons Alexander ‘Lex” Dow Cowan (1912-1965) and John ‘’Jack’’ (1915) From 1918-1925 they lived at 116 East St. before moving to 7 Irwin St. (Read more of his story in Notable People)

Inter-War / Post-War Bungalow with English Vernacular Influences

No 80 Oakover Street is a single-storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Porch style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust bay and a gable roofed porch. The porch extends north and acts as a verandah. It is supported on masonry columns set on limestone piers. The thrust bay features a set of casement windows under a sunhood. A broad set of concrete stairs leads from the porch to the garden. The place sits on a limestone foundation. There is a central door flanked by a set of casement windows. The lower walls are face brick and the upper walls are rendered. The roofscape features brick chimneys.

No. 80 (previously was no. 170) Duke Street is a single-storey cottage constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The facade features a full-width bull-nose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. There is a large carport to the south and additions to the rear. 

History

‘'My great aunt Alice Elizabeth Sievers (nee Cox) born in St Leonard’s Victoria in 1868 resided in this property with her husband Nicholas Sievers, (b 1865) Indented Head, Victoria from 1905 to 1909 (or 1913). Their children were all born in the Bellarine Peninsula, Victoria apart from the twins who were born in WA in 1902:

Nicholas (1885-1901), Ferdinand (1888-1905), Alice (1890 (m Shurman)- 1914), Irene (1893 (m Smith)- 1963)- Twins Edwin and Otto (born and died 1902). My understanding is that Nicholas Sievers was recruited from Victoria to utilise his skills in wharf building at Fremantle’' (Correspondence from Robert Cox 2019).

No 80 Fortescue Street is a single-storey house constructed in limestone brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with an offset gable roofed entry porch. The porch is supported on Tuscan Columns set on rendered piers. A masonry balustrade spans between the piers. The gable has been remodelled with timber boards. There is an entry door flanked by a sidelight and casement windows.

1917 Obituary. The late Myrtle Levin (Marie) Williamson, only daughter of Sapper Arthur William and Mrs. Williamson, of No. 150 Glyde-street, East Fremantle, passed away on the 14th inst., in her 14th year. The deceased little girl was one of the most popular and promising pupils attending the East Fremantle State School. Added to the pathetic nature of the case is the fact of the father being away on active service. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, the 15th inst., in the Roman Catholic portion of the Fremantle Cemetery, and was very largely attended, the scholars of the school being present in large numbers, also Mr. G. M'Lean (headmaster), and the Misses Thomas, Coppinger, Green, and Peat (class teachers). The chief mourners were Mrs. Williamson (mother), Master Arthur Williamson (brother), Mrs. Nurse A. J. Sheedy (aunt), and Arthur and Michael Sheedy (cousins). The pall-bearers were Millie Lacey, Elaine Thompson, Grace M'Crae, Valda Varcoe, Maggie McLeod, and Jean Lindsay (selected from the deceased's class, the 6th Standard). No 80 Allen Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable format corrugated iron roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and part width hip roofed verandah. The gable bay features a set of four casement windows under a sunhood. The verandah is set on timber posts. The front door is offset and flanked by two sets of three casement windows. The front door is centrally located.

1938 Cautioned For Nose Pulling. “Circumstances are so trivial that we do not think punishment merited,” announced the Bench in the Fremantle Police Court today, when A. W. Mofflin was cautioned on a charge of assault preferred by David Finlay. The Bench ordered each party to pay his own costs… Finlay, a young man residing in Irwin-street, East Fremantle, near Mofflin's home, said that on March 18, shortly after 5 p.m., Mofflin accused him of annoying his children by the manner he (Finlay) rode his motorcycle. A little later Mofflin alleged that witness had knocked one of his children off a scooter. Finally Mofflin pulled witness's nose. Mofflin's version of the incident was that he told Finlay of the annoyance caused by his motorcycle. He pulled Finlay’s nose after hearing that complainant had knocked his young son of his scooter. Interwar, California Bungalow

No 80 Irwin Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a typical expression of the California Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and a half gabled porch. The porch is supported on stout piers. A masonry balustrade runs between the piers. There is a central door flanked by sets of casement and fixed light windows. The porch roof extends over windows to act as sunhoods. The thrust bay features a set of casement windows. The lower walls are face brick and upper walls rendered. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.

Federation Free Classical style

No 77-85 George Street is a fine two storey building comprised of shops and residences. The place is constructed in rendered masonry with low pitched roofs behind a classically derived parapet wall. The shops are designed as a corner and mid-block suite building. There is a separate entrance for the sole residence on Sewell Street. The corner shop has a corner entrance. A cantilevered awning follows the line of the building and spans across most of the facades. Most of the shop fronts have been modified. Above the awning are pairs of single pane double hung sash windows surrounded with rendered architraves. Each pair of windows identifies a dwelling. A pilaster divides each shop and residence. The top of the parapet is terminated with an entablature. There are a further two single storey shops attached to the eastern side of the building.

It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a flat roofed entry porch. The entry porch is supported on rendered pillars. A steel balustrade spans between the pillars. The gable bay features a pair of double hung sash windows under a sunhood. There is a central door flanked by side lights and a double hung sash window. The roofscape features a rendered chimney and finials. Lower walls are face brick and the upper walls are rendered. The place is built on a limestone foundation.

The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a full width bullnosed roof verandah supported between parapet walls. The verandah is supported on timber posts over a timber floor. The timber decks have been extended partially over the front garden. Front doors have hopper lights and are located adjacent to the party wall. The doors are flanked by double hung sash windows with side lights. All openings have brick quoins. A series of stairs lead from street level to the garden and to the verandah.

ARCHITECTURE

Federation Cottage w Gothic Influences

No. 81 (previously was no. 165) Sewell street is a single story cottage constructed in timber framing, weatherboard and fibrous cement cladding with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is a asymmetrically planned with an offset entry door flanked by a double hung sash window. The facade features a full width return skillion roofed verandah supported on timber posts. A part of the verandah has been enclosed with lattice screens. An awning has been added to the front section of the verandah. The roof features a large brick chimney stack.

1921 The funeral of the late Mrs. Catherine Haynes, wife of Mr. William Henry Haynes, accountant of Fremantle, and of 165 Sewell-street, East Fremantle, took place on Wednesday, the 17th inst. and was attended by many friends. The deceased, who was 67 years of age, was born in County Donegal, Ireland, but had been a resident of this State for the last 23 years. (reference)

Inter-War Bungalow w Arts & Crafts Influences

No 81 Petra Street is a single storey house constructed in painted brick and rendered brick house with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with a timber frieze. The verandah terminates at the gable bay. The gable bay features a set of casement lights in a bay window. There is a central door flanked by sidelights and sets of casement windows. There are rendered bands and windows have decorative sills. The roofscape features a render capped chimney and finials.
