History

1938 Kitchen, Bathroom Gutted. The Kitchen and bathroom of a residence at 176 Duke-street, East Fremantle, were completely destroyed by fire shortly after noon today. The house, owned and occupied by William Henry Hames, and his wife, was uninsured. When the Fremantle fire brigade arrived a few minutes after noon the weatherboard back verandah, where the kitchen and bath-room were situated, was burning fiercely. Running out a line of hose, the brigade soon had the fire under control and saved the four brick rooms. It is thought that the blaze may have been caused by a spark from the kitchen stove. The occupants, an elderly couple, went into Fremantle about 10 a.m. today and were both absent when the fire occurred, Mrs. Hames returning home alone after it had been extinguished. Her husband had gone to the interstate football. (reference)
