1925 In The Midland Workshops. Mr. George Durie is a wagon painter, in fact, he's more, having been sailor, storekeeper, and whaler, and has travelled as far as Greenland on a blubber-seeking expedition. He is a man who considers that painting is an art—as he thinks it quite possible for a new chum to put the paint on inside out. George comes from the land of bradies, bannocks and bagpipes, and—but keep this to yourself—he once ran a produce store in North Melbourne. Alas, the marauding goats ate his profits. As to pastimes he revels in tennis (so they say) and running down kangaroos, and has made a handsome sum out of the skins of 'roos he has captured. (reference)

1915 East Fremantle Sensation. Alleged Attempted Rape. At Fremantle Police Court, John Parker, aged 26, described as a fitter, was presented on remand on a charge of attempted rape...The evidence disclosed that the alleged offence took place at East Fremantle on the evening of the 10th February, under very brutal circumstances. Annie Louisa Manning, a married woman, residing at 32 King-street, East Fremantle, with her husband, a warder at Fremantle Gaol, stated that on the date in question she left home at about 9.55 p.m. in company with her mother, Mrs. Berry, for the purpose of seeing the latter to the residence of Nurse Garbett in Canning-road, there to engage the latter for witness's approaching confinement. From there they proceeded to North Fremantle bridge, where, witness parted with her mother, the former returning alone towards her home. While walking along Canning-road shortly after leaving her mother witness heard someone call to her. That was near Tuckfield-street. Thinking it might be someone she knew she turned round, but seeing it was a strange man walked on. The man shouted again, and witness hurried along. The man hurried after her, and as she got near the East-street lamp she turned round- and faced her pursuer, when she noticed the man was indecently exposed. He said something, but witness did not catch what he said. Witness ran away towards the North Fremantle bridge crossing the road screaming, "Police!" Murder!" As she reached Tuckfieid-street again the man caught her and struck her in the mouth with his fists and she fell down. While on the ground the man caught her by the throat with both hands and witness continued to scream and to struggle. After a little time he released her throat with one hand, and interfered with her clothing, and attempted to achieve his object. Before anything further happened some one appeared on the scene, coming to her assistance. At this stage, the witness, who is obviously in a delicate state of health, was seized with a fit of hysterics...(reference)

The Lodge, 33 Moss Street was originally called Sydenham and was built in 1909 for Mary Bateman (wife of J. W. Bateman) by prominent Fremantle architect John McNeece, and contractor Mr. F. W. Spurr. This house is the finest surviving example of John McNeece’s work. It has been a hospital on and off for 50 years and empty for about 10 years. (correspondence from Rod Smith 2019)

From 1929 until 1949 it was known as St. Helen’s Private Hospital. Read more about the amazing woman who ran it—Sister Lila Kidston-Hunter under our Notable People section.

The major portion of the original building is substantially intact. Of interest are the verandahs, bay windows and the stables at the rear, whilst internally the hallways have magnificent loft paperwork and trimming with glass and tiled floor. The plaster work includes archways with columns, cornices, ceiling rosettes and matching moulded timber skirtings and architraves. There are several decorated mantels, distinctive examples of the era, with tessellated tile hearths matching the hallway. There is also a very old Norfolk Pine at the rear of the property.

Glanville's Building

Glanville’s Building (map)

ARCHITECTURE

Federation Free Classical

Glanville's Building is located at 34-36 Canning Highway and 5A & 5B Riverside Road, Glanville's Building is a brick residence with rendered details and low-pitched corrugated iron roof that is concealed by a dominant decorative, flamboyant parapet. It is a very fine and eccentric expression of the Federation Free Classical style. The street elevation accommodated two shopfronts with entrance doors and modest windows. Glanville's Buildings exhibits many of architect Hitchcock's 'signature' details. Spread over a two storey facade the contrast of stucco decoration against tuck-pointed brickwork is quite striking and quite unlike any other building in Perth.

HISTORY

Glanville’s Building, 34-36 Canning Highway and 5A & 5B Riverside Rd East Fremantle, was built in 1902 by Norman Hitchcock for Mr Henry Charles Glanville, a chemist of Market Street, Fremantle, in 1902. The ground floor (street level) of the building housed two shops: a pharmacy from which Mr Glanville dispensed his potions, and a tailor shop operated by Rummer and Sweet. The basement and upper floors of the building were used for storage and the Glanville family's accommodation. The Glanville family owned the building until 1946. It was renovated in 1981 and was entered on the State Heritage Register with permanent listing in 1994.

The Glanville's Buildings, although altered internally, is the best example of the work of architect Hitchcock. Hitchcock designed a number of terrace houses in Melbourne however, Glanville's Buildings is the only known three-story example by Hitchcock in Western Australia. Other Hitchcock buildings in the East Fremantle area include: the 'George Street Mews', 107-121 George Street; terrace houses at 46-52 King Street; two semi-detached houses at 25-27 Sewell Street and a gable fronted detached house in Hubble Street. Hitchcock also built the National Hotel in Fremantle.
