No. 34 Irwin Street - Eelup- is a single-storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevations is asymmetrically planned with a gable thrust bay and part-width verandah. The verandah is supported on Tuscan columns. Concrete steps lead from the verandah to the garden. There is a central door flanked by windows. The roofscape features rendered chimneys and finials.

No 34 Gill Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Porch style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a hip roofed porch. A gable has been added to the south section of the porch. The porch is set proud of the house and is supported on masonry piers. The half-timbered gable bay features a set of casement windows under a sun hood. There is a central door flanked by side lights and casement windows. The lower walls are face brick and the upper walls rendered.

The thrust bay features a set of casement windows under a tiled awning. There is a central door flanked by casement windows. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.

Late Victorian / Federation, Domestic Carpenter w Georgian Influences

No. 34 (previously was no. 74) King Street is a single storey cottage constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a 'M' format corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and single pane double hung sash windows. The façade features a full width bullnosed verandah supported on timber posts.

The place is consistent with the pattern of development in Plympton and plays an important role in the pattern of development of a working class suburb.

Royal George Hotel

Architecture

Royal George Hotel is located at 34 George Street (previously was no. 78) on Duke street, is a two-storey, Federation Free Classical style brick and limestone corner Hotel building. The cupola is a rare example still in its original form. The basement levels are a rare - coach house and workshop areas are incorporated with cellar facilities underneath the hotel building.

History

1903 TENDERS are invited until Monday, the 19th January, 1903, at 4 p.m., for building the Royal George Hotel, at Plympton, Fremantle. The Royal George Hotel was built in 1903 by builder J. Vetter at a cost of £5,200 for Daniel Mulcahy, who had purchased the hotel from John Maher. Some issues were experienced with the architect (E Manerman sic) but in June 1904 the provisional certificate for the hotel had been granted, the survey of the property made and plans executed. ‘‘Bonafide travellers’’ a liquor licensing law which only allowed travellers to drink on Sundays affected many hotels including the Royal George:

1919 Sunday Trading—William Minett, licensee of the Royal George Hotel, was charged with having served non bonafide travellers during prohibited hours on Sunday, March 30. See: (reference)

1940 Drinking after hours- Gerald Garrett Prenderville, licensee of the Royal George Hotel, East Fremantle, was fined in the Fremantle Police Court yesterday with having kept his licensed premises open for the sale of liquor after 9 p.m. on November 30. Prenderville pleaded guilty to this and another charge of failing to keep a register of lodgers. For the latter offence he was cautioned and ordered to pay 3/ costs. See: (reference)

1946 Licensee Frederick Robert Mann, of the Royal George Hotel, East Fremantle, was fined in Fremantle Police Court today on charges involving Sunday trading. See: (reference)

1954 The engagement is announced of Mary, only daughter of Mrs. R. Paino and the late Mr. A. Paino, of 10 Fortescue-street, East Fremantle, to Leone (Royal George Hotel, East Fremantle), youngest son of Mrs. F. Alessandro and the late Mr. G. Alessandro, of Italy. (reference)

The hotel was de-liscenced in 1979 and used as a school for 5 years.

In 1983, Main Roads WA wanted to demolish the building as part of the Stirling Highway construction. The building was saved by ratepayers and the East Fremantle Council. The Council spent millions on restoring the building 1986/87.

The Royal George Arts Centre was open in 1987. In 1989 the Royal George won a Heritage award. The property was added to the Municipal Resgistry in 1997 and Register of Heriotage Places in 1998.

The George St Gallery ran for many years c. 1995- 2006

In 2004, Labor politician Alannah MacTiernan gave it to the National Trust WA, on terms never made public.

However these were that the land be zoned ‘community’ and use of the property be restricted to ‘community, recreational, civic and ancilary commercial; activity’ (letter from Alanah Mc Tiernan, then Minister of Planning and Infrastructure, to the National Trust, 3 Feb 2004)

Currently a controversial development project is in play and the empty building has been vandalised and boarded up.

The place sits on limestone foundations. The roofscape features a brick chimney.

No 34 (previously known as No 64) Hubble Street is a single story cottage constructed in limestone and rendered brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a fine and simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah supported by timber posts over a timber floor. All reveals have rendered brick architraves.

HISTORY

1930 Accident. Volunteer Cadet Shot. Rifle shooting practice at the Swanbourne Rifle Range had a dramatic sequel at Fremantle yesterday afternoon, when a member of the cadet volunteer forces, Thomas Robinson (16), of Glyde-street, East Fremantle. was accidentally shot in the side by a companion. The victim was hurriedly removed to the Fremantle Hospital by the St. John ambulance. It was found that the bullet had passed through his body. It was reported to the Fremantle police that Robinson was returning home from Swanbourne in company with Leonard James Nicholl (16), of, Hubble-street, East Fremantle, and Gordon McAlphine (17), of Wood-street, East Fremantle. The boys were carrying .303 military rifles, which they had used during the day at the range. While walking along Point street, Robinson found a £1 note, and as he picked it up, Nicholl took his gun from his shoulder and playfully pointed it at Robinson, demanding that he give him the money. The gun then exploded, and Robinson dropped to the ground, the bullet having entered his right side.. (reference)

Bungalow with Federation Influences

No 34 May Street is a single-storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a full-width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts. A timber fretwork frieze and timber balustrade span between the posts. The house is set above limestone foundations. The front facade features sets of casement windows. The entry door is located under the return verandah. The roofscape features a render capped chimney and finials.

HISTORY

1930 Birth on February 5, at 34 May-street, East Fremantle, to Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Harwood—a son. Both well. (reference) 

1942 Struck By Cars. Stanley Graham Harwood, a soldier, of 34 May-street, East Fremantle, was in 2 vehicular accidents on Saturday night. About 6 pm he was driving a car that knocked down a soldier in a crosswalk in Hay street, Perth. The pedestrian soldier appeared to be uninjured. About 11pm a car that Harwood was driving struck a pole at the west end of the Causeway. Molly Scott (20) and Jean Thompson (18), both of Midland Junction, who were passengers in the car, were treated at the Perth Hospital for minor injuries.(reference)

No 34 Fortescue Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Porch style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with receded wall planes. There is a central hipped roof porch set on paired piers. The porch is flanked by sets of casement windows under sun hoods. There is a central door under the porch. Lower walls are face brick and the upper walls are rendered. The roofscape features a tall rendered chimney.

HISTORY

1934 Betting Arrests. On charges of having kept premises in Fremantle as common betting houses. Laurence Vick (36), commission agent, Alexander Marn (47), commission agent and Edward John Knapp (32), commission agent, were arrested today by Constables Kelman and Kelliher. They were granted bail to appear in Fremantle Police Court on Monday. (reference)

1934 Betting Charges. Pleas of guilty were entered by Joseph Laurence Vick (36), Edward John Knapp (32), Alexander Marn (47) when they appeared in the Fremantle Police Court today to answer charges of having used and kept premises as common betting houses. The R.M. (Mr. H.J. Craig), imposed a fine of £1 with 10s costs in each instance. P.c. Kelliher stated that on Saturday morning, a police agent made bets with the defendants on their premises! No 35 Irwin Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width return hip roofed verandah. The half-rendered gable bay features a bay window with casement windows under a tiled awning.

HISTORY

1931 Fierce Storm Strikes Fremantle. A Narrow Escape. Evidence of narrow escapes from death or serious injury by Mr. and Mrs. Bennett was contained in the heaps of bricks on the floor beside the bed in which they were asleep. A brick chimney had been blown down with such force as to crash through both roof and ceiling, leaving a gaping hole several feet across. Their two children were sleeping in an adjoining room, which was least damaged of any. Striking the house at the rear, the wind tore the iron roof away practically bodily, and some of the sheets of Iron were carried a quarter of a mile. A piece of 4 by 3 jarrah roofing timber was picked up this morning two streets away. "It was a like big-gun bombardment," said Mr. Bennett this morning when recounting his experience. We thought daylight would never arrive as we busied ourselves trying to find a dry spot in the house in which to place the furniture." (reference)

1938 Swamped By Wave Yacht Sinks Off Rottnest. About a mile north of Bathurst Point, Rottnest, in 60 feet of water, is a comparatively new 16-foot yacht. It sank there on Tuesday after being swamped. After searching for it on Wednesday and yesterday, the owner has abandoned his efforts. On Tuesday, William Sims (34), signal man, of Rottnest Island, went for a fishing cruise in his yacht Belinda, with Harry Bennett (42), of Irwin-street, Fremantle, who was spending the Christmas holidays at the island. When they were about a mile north of Bathurst Point on the return journey, the wind suddenly changed from east to south-west, and the vessel, temporarily out of control, was swamped by a big wave. "We were taken unawares," said Mr. Sims yesterday, "and the boat sank in about five or 10 minutes, the air in her decking preventing her from going straight under. I had worked her throughout the winter without any trouble, and I think that the lead ballast this time slipped across into her stern, causing her to heel over." Both occupants kicked off their clothes and started the mile swim to the shore. "We received a bit of a shock," said Mr. Sims, "but we thought we could make the distance easily." They had only been swimming about 10 minutes when they were picked up by the yacht Sobrona, which was being sailed by Mr. K.G. Mitchell, of 16 Lincoln-street. Highgate, who had seen the other men go under and immediately went to their assistance... (reference)

No. 35 (previously was no. 79) King Street is a single storey cottage constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a 'M' format corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and single pane double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width bullnosed verandah supported on timber posts. 

HISTORY

1908 Harold Martin, a lad aged 15, stated that about 1 p.m. on April 2 he was driving, along the bank of the river at Richmond, near the bridge. He saw a hat in the water and stopped with the intention of getting it. When he approached the water he noticed the body of a boy a few yards from the bank. He called a man named Gourley, who was passing, and between them they brought the body to the shore. (reference)

The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by sets of casement windows. The facade features a full width skillion roof verandah supported on timber posts with brackets. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. A feature of the house is its gabled verandah entry. There are concrete steps going from the verandah to the garden. The roofscape features a rendered chimney. The sills are rendered and there is a rendered string course.

It is an expression of the Federation Bungalow style that has been modified. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width, return hip roofed verandah. The verandah has been partially enclosed in rendered brick. It terminates at the gable bay and is set on steel posts. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a double hung sash window. The gable bay features a pair of double hung sash windows. 

HISTORY

1941 Consolation Prize of 2/6 to Mrs. Deary, 35 Bedford St., East Fremantle, W.A. Cauliflower Souffle with Bacon. One cauliflower, salt, paprika, thin slices bacon, 1 tablespoon butter, 1 tablespoon flour, 4 tablespoons grated celery, 3 eggs, salt and pepper. Put alternate layers of lightly cooked cauliflower and bacon into a well-buttered baking-dish and cover with a souffle mixture made as follows: Melt butter in saucepan, add flour, mix well, then add 1½ cups milk. Stir till it boils, simmer 4 minutes and add 3 egg-yolks and grated cheese, salt and pepper to taste. Mix well, then fold in stiffly-beaten whites of 3 eggs and pour over cauliflower in dish. Bake in moderate oven 30 minutes (do not open the door until mixture is ready to come out). Serve immediately. (reference)

It is a very fine expression of the Federation Filigree style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return bullnose verandah. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts with fretwork friezes. A timber balustrade spans between the posts. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and bay windows. The bay windows extend above the verandah line and feature pairs of double hung sash windows. The half-timbered gables sit above the bay windows. The roofscape features tall chimneys with rendered chimney caps. There are additions to the rear of the house.
