1947 Gruesome Find Sequel To Deckhand's 20th Birthday. Death was closely shadowing Ripley as he stepped ashore from the gang plank of the Trident at Fremantle on November 8, to celebrate his 20th birthday. When soldier William Bradford, of East Fremantle, last saw him a few hours before he died, the seaman was sitting on the roadway after alighting from a taxi a few feet from the spot where his body was later found. Bradford told A/SM R. P. Rodriguez that shortly before closing time on November 7, a barman at the National Hotel, Fremantle, asked him if he would show a colored seaman (whom he identified later as Omer, at a line-up aboard the Trident) where to get a taxi. As he was taking Omer to the railway station rank, he saw Ripley, who "appeared to be very drunk", staggering across the footpath in Market-Street. Omer, Bradford said, took Ripley by one arm and then walked him over to a taxi. Bradford added that when he told taxi driver Joseph Davies to drive the 2 men to North Wharf, Davies refused to do so at first unless he accompanied them also. Ripley pulled a wallet from his pocket, and Bradford told him to put it back. After Davies had promised to drive him home to East Fremantle afterwards, Bradford said he got into the front seat of the taxi and Ripley and Omer climbed into the rear. Then, at Omer's request, they drove to a cafe in High-st, where Omer collected 6 bottles of beer which he had left there previously. They then drove to North Wharf, pulled up near where Ripley's battered body was later discovered. As Omer stepped from the taxi, Bradford added, one of the bottles of beer he was carrying slipped from the parcel and shattered on the roadway. Omer, he said, appeared to be sober. (reference)

1947 Lineups On Trident. Following the early-morning discovery of Ripley's body, PCC Sgt. George Robert Johnson drove into Fremantle to find taxi-driver Joseph Davies. From there, with Davies and Det. W. Neilson, he went to East Fremantle to locate soldier William Bradford. Returning to North Wharf, Johnson saw Omer in a police van. Telling to Coroner Rodriquez what he said took place, Johnson said Omer told him he went ashore by himself the previous night. Omer, Johnson added, told him that he returned to North Wharf "with the taxi man. Only the taxi man." Asked what time it was then, Omer replied, "About 8 o'clock." Johnson said he was present on the Trident during a line-up and was also present when Davies touched Omer on the shoulder and identified him as the man who had been in the taxi with Ripley the previous night. Bradford identified him after. Later Omer, according to Johnson, when told that Ripley was dead and that he (Omer) was suspected of having murdered him, stated: "Is that boy dead? Why would I kill him?" After saying "I will tell the truth. My Koran makes me tell the truth," he allegedly gave a statement. (reference)

1943 Historic Ukulele: This much autographed ukulele which was used wherever a famous West Australian battalion went, until its owner was captured at Ruin Ridge, has been brought back to this State. It was the property of Corporal Harold Smith whose parents reside at 64 Glyde Street, East Fremantle. Corporal Smith was invariably called on to play and sing at camp concerts but it was during the siege of Tobruk that the ukulele and its owner were most in demand. Deciding that the ukulele should be a permanent memento of the battalion, men scratched sketches of three rats at the top of it and then added the words "of Tobruk." From then on members of the unit from officers down to privates inscribed their names back and front of the ukulele until it was fully covered with more than 200 signatures. Ned Ducker, of Spearwood, found the ukulele after Corporal Smith was taken prisoner and recently handed it over to Corporal Smith's parents. (reference)

HISTORY

1908 Simpson "Ayr Villa’’ 128 King-street, East Fremantle. Dear Uncle Tom, I shall be very glad if you will have me for one of your nieces, for I will do all I can to make the sick children happy. Now, dear uncle, some time ago the people wanted to build a church, but had not enough money, so they got books printed (like art union books), and each leaf represented a brick, and were sold by the children at a penny each. Now, do you not think we could do the same for the Children's Hospital? I am eleven years old on May 29 next, and my little sister Maggie, who was four on July 14, also wants to be a niece of yours. My father says that we can have all the grapes on one side of the garden for the little ones. I remain, hoping to be very soon your loving  niece, FRANCIS SIMPSON, aged 10.

1908 Dear Frances,—You have made a wise suggestion, and I thank you for it, and will consider it well. You have a kind and thoughtful father to give you the grapes for the sick children. The inmates at the various institutions would be glad to get them. Poor things, they do not get much in the way of nice fruit. Uncle Tom. (reference)

1908 Children’s Page. "Ayr Villa," 128 King-street, East Fremantle. Dear Uncle Tom,—I thank you very much for the postcard you sent me on my birthday. I did not think you would remember a little boy, like me, I am very glad to tell you that I am to get a medal for collecting money for the Children's Hospital, also that my sister Frances is going to send you a P.N. for three shillings. I am going to take part in the drill competition to take place on the Fremantle Oval on Friday and Saturday. Hoping that you are well, I remain, your affectionate nephew, Bobby Simpson. (reference)

1908 Children’s Page. "Ayr Villa," 128 King-street, East Fremantle. Dear Uncle Tom,—It is a long time since I wrote to you, but I have not forgotten that I am a niece of yours. I am sending a postal-note for three shillings, one shilling each from Bobby, Maggie and I. I am sorry to say I could not enter for the school drill competition at the Fremantle Oval, as I had a poisoned thumb. There are to be 5,000 children there. We went to Bunbury on Eight Hours Day. Everything looked so nice and green, and the sheep, cattle, and horses were fat, and the look of the orange trees made us wish that we were near them, From your affectionate niece, Frances Simpson.
