Federation / Gable Terrace w Gothic Influences

No 35-37 (previously know as No 71) Hubble Street is a duplex pair of single story cottages constructed in limestone and brickwork with gabled corrugated iron roofs and decorative gables. They are a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The pair is symmetrically planned with a full width bullnose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts on rendered masonry piers. Between the piers is a rendered masonry balustrade. Front doors are set either side of the party wall and are flanked by pairs of double hung sash windows. A parapet wall divides the pair.

ARCHITECTURE

No 35 Canning Highway is a single storey house in limestone and rendered masonry with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a prominent gabled thrust bay with an elaborate carved barge board. The facade features a part width bull-nosed roofed verandah on timber posts over a concrete floored verandah with steps leading down to the garden. The place has been extensively modified but retains its basic form.

Inter-War, Bungalow Porch House

No 35 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in roughcast rendered brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War California Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with an offset gabled entry porch. The porch is set on paired timber posts. There is an offset front door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a casement window. There is a set of casement windows protected by a tiled sunhood. The roofscape features a rendered chimney. Originally the lower walls were face brick and the upper walls roughcast render. The lower walls have been rendered.

Inter-War Bungalow w Federation / Filigree Influences

No 35 Staton Road is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The place has influences of the earlier Federation Filigree style. The place sits on a corner lot that addresses both Staton Road and Alcester Street. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width return skillion roof verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with decorative filigree work. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. The verandah terminates at both ends at gable bays. The front gable bay is part timbered with a louvered panel. The gable is set over a bay window with casement windows and a sunhood. There is a central door flanked by a corner suite. The windows have decorative sills. The roofscape features brick chimneys with rendered caps. The place sits on a limestone foundation.

No 35 May Street is a single-storey house constructed in timber and fibrous cement cladding with a hipped tiled roof. It is a good expression of the Post-World War II Austerity style. The place is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and part-width flat roof verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. There is a central door flanked by a set of three double hung sash windows. The thrust bay has the same window detailing.

The Brush Factory

Federation Free Classical

The Brush Factory is located at 36-42 Duke Street and is a factory building constructed in limestone with brick quoins around arched barred windows with rendered masonry. The ground floor is partially below street level.

HISTORY

W.A. Brushware Co. (1909) Ltd., East Fremantle, started in 1897 in Fremantle as H. Albrecht and Co. It was taken over in 1907 and a new factory was built on the corner of Duke and George Streets, East Fremantle. Additions were made in 1932. The factory employed many local Plympton workers.

An article in 1928 outlined that half their product was sold locally and the other half exported to the Eastern States. (reference)
“This East Fremantle factory is showing a fine display of their productions at the Manufacturers' Hall at the Royal Show. This firm has built up a solid reputation as manufacturers of all kinds of brushware, also wood, zinc, and glass washboards, and colored cotton mops in various sizes. They specialise in brushes for the dairy, flour mill and butter factories. A striking fact of note is that this factory competes successfully with the Eastern States trade. Every housewife should insist on buying the high quality productions of this local firm”. (reference)

Lauder and Howard Antiques, 1979 - 2009

Established in 1979, partners Les Lauder and Mark Howard, were antique dealers with showrooms situated in the old Brushware building until 2009. Les Lauder was awarded an Order of Australia in 2017 for his services to heritage. Always a passionate advocate for the heritage of Fremantle he founded and served as President of the Fremantle Society (credited with saving Fremantle from the wrecking ball) and was a Fremantle councillor several times -most recently (2005-2009). In 2017 they moved to Tasmania.

Brushware Factory, 2018

The Duke on George - a New Orleans Jazz and Blues bar, is a 200-seat venue in the basement of the Brush Factory.

No 36 Allen Street is a single storey house constructed in tuck pointed brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Arts and Crafts style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a part width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is set on concrete Doric columns set over piers. A rendered masonry wall runs between the piers. The front door is offset and set under the return verandah and addresses the street. The front facade features sets of three casement windows. The southern window has a tiled awning over it. A pair of prominent gables are a feature of the house.

No 36 Osborne Road is a single storey house constructed in limestone, tuck-pointed brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Queen Anne style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return bull-nosed roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. A particular feature of the house is a diagonally oriented bay window. There is a half-timbered gable above the bay window. The bay window features a pair of double hung sash windows. The place sits on limestone foundations. There are render string courses and windows have decorative sills. The place retains its form and most of its details. The original tiled roof has been replaced with corrugated iron sheeting.

The verandah is supported on steel posts. The southern verandah has been enclosed with frame construction. The verandah terminates at the gabled bay on the front elevation. The gable bay features vents, a pair of double hung sash windows and a sunhood. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by a pair of double hung sash windows. The place sits on limestone foundations. The lower walls are face brick and the upper walls are rendered.

1946 A Victorian who is deserting his native State of Victoria to retire in W.A. is Commonwealth Veterinary Officer E. J. Tomlin, J.P., of East Fremantle. He will begin recreational leave next Thursday before retirement on July 12, his 65th birthday. Mr Tomlin qualified in veterinary science at Melbourne University, first came to W.A. in 1923 to set the grading of lambs at the W.A. Meat Export Works in South Fremantle. ...When Mr Tomlin first came to this State no pork was being exported, but in recent years hundreds of tons have been shipped away annually. Lamb export figures were expanding rapidly before the war, but declined on account of service requirements, shortage of labour and bad winters. Mr Tomlin has had varied activities, having been president of the North-East Fremantle R.S.L. for four years, member of the Crippled Children's Seaside Home Committee, and the Food for Britain appeal committee. He is fond of gardening and football, his favourite team being East Fremantle. (reference)

No 36 Hamilton Street is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a very fine expression of the Federation Queen Anne style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with fretwork friezes. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. The thrust bay features casement windows, sunhood and a jetted gable with timber fretwork. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and casement windows. The roofscape features rendered chimneys and dragon finials and cresting. The walls are brick with render string courses and there are dressings under windows.

No 36 (previously known as No 68) Hubble Street is a single story house constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped corrugated iron roof. The place is asymmetrically planned with a full width return bullnose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on square timber posts. The verandah stops at an extension to the north. The extension has French doors to the verandah. There is a central door flanked by double hung sash windows.

HISTORY

1912 Witness: Neil Michelson, a shunter, spoke to meeting the woman and McPhie, and the woman asked him to direct her to the Railway Hotel, as a man was following her, and had threatened to rob her. He did not take much notice of the woman at the time, as she appeared excited. When she asked to be shown the way to the Railway Hotel she went on ahead of him along Eleanor-street. He was cutting off the corner near De Fratuas` boardinghouse, and the woman was then at the intersection of Eleanor-street and Forrest-street. He shouted to her to turn round there. He had got ahead, and looking behind him saw a man coming round the corner. The man caught up to the woman near the Public Buildings, and witness heard something like a cry, a blow, and a fall. He then saw the woman on the ground and the man running away. Going up to the woman he asked her what was wrong, and she said the man had taken her hand bag and her ticket to Day Dawn... (reference)

It is a good example of a Federation Bungalow style house. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width bullnosed roof verandah between flanking parapet walls. The verandah is supported on timber posts. The openings are surrounded with brick quoins.

1915 Writing to his mother (Mrs. W. C. Barrett, of East Fremantle) James Barrett, of the 10th Light Horse, gives an insight into the business of camp life… “We all live in dugouts when not in the trenches, and when not fighting are always busy building roads, trenches, and other warlike necessaries. Across the valley road we had to build barricades (as protection against snipers, who were very bad at first), and I was camped behind one of these for some days. It was here that I had my closest call. The big guns had been busy all day, and one had been lobbing a 9 in. shell about 3ft. long near our bivouac, but it only accounted for a few men…” (reference)

1934 Drowning Narrowly Escaped. Trio’s Good Work. An eight-year-old boy, George Smith, of 39 Silas-street, East Fremantle, had a narrow escape from drowning in the Swan River near the old Castlemaine Brewery, East Fremantle, yesterday afternoon, when two other lads hesitated before going to his rescue, because swimmers in the locality are in the habit of pretending to drown. A combination of two plucky youngsters and a resourceful man saved his life. Smith was rescued in the last stages of exhaustion, but effective resuscitation measures by Lionel Bulliard, a lumper and former league footballer, saved his life.
