HISTORY

“For nearly sixty years Mrs Jessie Grimshaw wrote letters to the local Perth papers, about issues that were important to her; putting her comment before the public and making them think. She posted a letter several times a week over six decades of social change and her opinions were valued- she challenged spiritedly, on their behalf everything she considered not in the public’s good.” From Reflections, Profiles of 150 women who helped make Western Australia’s History,  edited by Daphne Popham, 1979. (see story under Notable People)

Jessie Tait married John Henry Grimshaw in either 1915 or 1916. Their family lived at 173 Forrest St, East Fremantle from 1927. This became no 96 Forrest from 1937. Jessie and John had 5 children: Jessie Henrietta (1916- 1994), John Alexander ‘Jack’ (b. 1917), Dorothy Elizabeth (b. 1920), William Thomas (b. 1920)   Henry C (b. 1926).

HISTORY

1906 East Fremantle Postal Requirements. To the Editor. Sir,—Information is given in your paper of this day that Mr. Angwin, mayor of this municipality, has written to his friend, Mr. Carpenter, stating that the delivery of letters is now made direct from Fremantle Post Office, and asking him to get the postal authorities to instruct the Deputy Postmaster General to have all mails for East Fremantle sent direct to the Canning-road Post Office. Unfortunately, a number of streets belonging to the Municipality of Fremantle, consisting of, from the boundary of one side of East-street, which ends East Fremantle Municipality, then run into Fremantle viz., Tuckfield-street, Cantonment-road, Burt-street, and others to James-street, are all on the electoral roll of East Fremantle, and as the post office authorities deal only with the divisions, all letters and parcels addressed to the residents of these streets have been sent to the post office, Canning-road, which caused great delay in their delivery… John McCleery (reference)

1906 Sir,—Mr. McCleery's statement in your issue of Saturday, that I requested my friend, Mr. Carpenter, M.H.R., to have all letters in the East Fremantle district delivered from the Canning-road Post Office must have been an assumption on his part, as no such request was ever made by me. It is a matter of indifference whether the delivery is made from the Canning-road or the central Fremantle office, if there is no delay in the delivery by the change… W. C. Angwin (reference)

1921 ...Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Stedman will leave the district for East Fremantle, where Mr. Stedman has been transferred to take charge of the post office in that centre. During the past five years Mr. Stedman has been postmaster at Leonora and by his courtesy and obliging manner has given much satisfaction to the public. Both himself and Mrs. Stedman will be much missed in the social life of the town, and were most enthusiastic golfers—rarely missing an opportunity of having a round or two of golf… (reference)

1928 Sly Grog Seized. Thomas Henry Harper, a fruiterer of East Fremantle, said that on market days (every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) he went to Lee Wood's place to cart bananas and apples from there to some other Chinese at North Fremantle. He also bought Chinese meats there occasionally. These were also for the Chinese at Fremantle, as he explained that he would not personally eat them. On the morning of March 9 he went into the shop. As there was no one there he went into the dining-room behind the shop. There were several Chinese there, and also a white man, who was standing and holding a ladder which went through a hole in the roof. Just then Lee Wood came into the room and said, 'You want sausages?' Witness said 'Yes,' and went into the front of the shop, where he bought a pound of Chinese sausages, for which he paid 2s 3d. HISTORY

Thomas Ryan died when a well collapsed on him in 1906. He had just turned 38.

1906 The body of the unfortunate contractor, Thomas Ryan, who was buried in a well in Canning-road, East Fremantle, on Friday morning, was not recovered until 7.30 on Saturday evening… A large number of volunteers worked throughout Friday night and all day Saturday, but owing to the treacherous nature of the ground, the utmost care had to be exercised. As it was a man named Richard Branson, while working in the sand outside the "drum," suddenly disappeared and but for the prompt manner in which an other worker came to his assistance, he would have been totally buried in the drift…The funeral which took place at the Fremantle Cemetery yesterday afternoon, was attended by a large number of people, including the Mayor of East Fremantle (Mr. W. C. Angwin), and Councillors Farrington and Fordham. The chief mourners were-the widow of deceased, S. Morris, W. Rowe (brothers-in-law), Miss M. Morris (niece), Walter and Samuel Morris (nephews), Robert Wanless, and Thomas Ryan. (reference)

His defacto wife/partner at the time was known as Matilda Ann RYAN (1864-1938). There was a court case in 1907 regarding Thomas’s estate and doubt was cast upon the fact that Matilda and Thomas were ever married by Ryan’'s sons Prosper Patrick Ryan and Thomas Adolphus Ryan who took their stepmother to court, but lost the case. (reference)

Matilda went on to have a store on the corner of George and King Streets. At the time of her death, Matilda’s full descriptive name would’ve been Matilda Ann LAMB (was RYAN, was FOSTER nee ROWE). Correspondence from Raymond Morris 2019

A gentleman who used to visit me once a year, until he died. He grew up in the area and told me stories of hearing the ships horns and running to the corner shop with his stick and hoop to wait for the comic books to be delivered, which he still owned and brought to show me one day. He was also one of the first graphic designers at the ABC doing it all by hand, a hoarder and gay, which shamed his family, so he told me. Sadly when he died, all his belongings went to auction which I happened to attend not knowing it was him. There was a pile of the comic books and so I asked the auctioneer if they were his and the advised me that the family were ashamed and didn’t want to tell people who he was. So I didn’t buy them as they implied I shouldn’t as it was unlikely him. It wasn’t till afterwards that I found out they were his – if I had known I would have purchased the comics. I did buy a yellow oriental pot which I still have – I think of him often when looking at it. Kind of sad I thought. Smile, Claire McGowan (20.6.2019)

HISTORY

AIF 1916, Robert Henry Matthews (Regimental number 2254) Occupation Labourer, 109 (or 104) George Street, East Fremantle, Married, Age at embarkation 27. Next of kin Wife: Lilly Matthews

1911 Dear Auntie Nell, I was very unfortunate in not being able to procure a copy of the paper the Saturday my essay appeared, and would feel very much obliged if you could forward me a copy along with the prize I am very pleased to have won. The paper, I think, was either the 17th of 9th of December. I spent Christmas very happily, and enjoyed myself immensely. On Boxing Day, my mother, my two brothers (Dave and Jim) and myself went to the popular resort of Fremantle known as the South Beach. My brother Dave says he would like to write to you and become one of your many nephews, so you may expect a letter from him shortly. From this forward I will watch "The Daily News" for more essays. Wishing you the season's greetings, - I remain, your loving nephew, Jack O’Brien, 109 George-street, East Fremantle. (reference)

1935 Fined For Assault. This is a pretty bad case, commented Mr. H. J. Craig, S.M., in the Fremantle Police Court yesterday, when he convicted Albert Arnold Dungey on two charges or unlawful assault and one charge of using abusive and insulting language. Accused was charged with having unlawfully assaulted his wife at East Fremantle on March 2, and Peter O'Brien, his father-in-law, on; March 10, and with having used abusive and insulting language towards Annie O'Brien, his mother-in-law, on March 2. Gwendoline Dungey said that she was separated from her husband, who usually came to her home, on Sundays to see the children and take them out. On several such occasions he abused her and hit her when she told him that he could not see the children at that moment. He had not paid her any maintenance since January 6. In answer to a question by the magistrate, witness said that she did not want the defendant to see the children. It was not fair that he should, as he paid nothing to keep them and created a disturbance whenever he came to the place. Annie O'Brien and Peter O'Brien gave similar evidence. (reference)
