HISTORY

Thomas Ryan died when a well collapsed on him in 1906. He had just turned 38.

1906 The body of the unfortunate contractor, Thomas Ryan, who was buried in a well in Canning-road, East Fremantle, on Friday morning, was not recovered until 7.30 on Saturday evening… A large number of volunteers worked throughout Friday night and all day Saturday, but owing to the treacherous nature of the ground, the utmost care had to be exercised. As it was a man named Richard Branson, while working in the sand outside the "drum," suddenly disappeared and but for the prompt manner in which an other worker came to his assistance, he would have been totally buried in the drift…The funeral which took place at the Fremantle Cemetery yesterday afternoon, was attended by a large number of people, including the Mayor of East Fremantle (Mr. W. C. Angwin), and Councillors Farrington and Fordham. The chief mourners were-the widow of deceased, S. Morris, W. Rowe (brothers-in-law), Miss M. Morris (niece), Walter and Samuel Morris (nephews), Robert Wanless, and Thomas Ryan. (reference)

His defacto wife/partner at the time was known as Matilda Ann RYAN (1864-1938). There was a court case in 1907 regarding Thomas’s estate and doubt was cast upon the fact that Matilda and Thomas were ever married by Ryan’'s sons Prosper Patrick Ryan and Thomas Adolphus Ryan who took their stepmother to court, but lost the case. Matilda went on to have a store on the corner of George and King Streets. At the time of her death, Matilda’s full descriptive name would’ve been Matilda Ann LAMB (was RYAN, was FOSTER nee ROWE). Correspondence from Raymond Morris 2019

A gentleman who used to visit me once a year, until he died. He grew up in the area and told me stories of hearing the ships horns and running to the corner shop with his stick and hoop to wait for the comic books to be delivered, which he still owned and brought to show me one day. He was also one of the first graphic designers at the ABC doing it all by hand, a hoarder and gay, which shamed his family, so he told me. Sadly when he died, all his belongings went to auction which I happened to attend not knowing it was him. There was a pile of the comic books and so I asked the auctioneer if they were his and the advised me that the family were ashamed and didn’t want to tell people who he was. So I didn’t buy them as they implied I shouldn’t as it was unlikely him. It wasn’t till afterwards that I found out they were his – if I had known I would have purchased the comics. I did buy a yellow oriental pot which I still have – I think of him often when looking at it. Kind of sad I thought. Smile, Claire McGowan (20.6.2019)
