Inter / Post War English Vernacular / Arts and Crafts

No 64 View Terrace is a three storey house constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War English Revival style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a part width bull-nosed roofed verandah. The verandah is a modern addition. A prominent gabled roof section extends above the verandah. The gable is steeply pitched and features sets of casement windows. A second gable sits at a right angle to the first. The house is somewhat picturesque. A carport has been constructed in the front set back adjacent the verandah. The entry door is located under the carport.

No. 64 (previously was no. 94) East street is a single storey house in limestone and brick construction with a hipped ‘M’ format iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by windows and sidelights. The facade features a bullnose front verandah supported on timber posts with a decorative frieze over a concrete floor.

No 64 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fair expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. The half-timbered thrust bay features a set of casement windows under a sunhood. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by French doors. The roofscape features a pair of chimneys and finials.

Its foundation is a Federation Bungalow style house that has been extensively renovated in the late 1950s. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and a part width verandah. The verandah is supported on steel posts and extends across the thrust bay to act as an awning. The thrust bay features a set of 3 casement windows.

No 64 Allen Street is a single storey house constructed in brickwork, rendered brick and limestone with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War California Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width gable roofed verandah. The verandah is set on limestone and rendered piers with a limestone balustrade. The gable bay features a set of three casement windows under a tiled awning. A broad set of steps leads down to the garden from the verandah. It has a central door flanked by sidelights and casement windows. The roofscape is an important feature of the house with sweeping half-timbered gables.

HISTORY

James and Madge McPhee brought the land in 1941 and moved into the new house in 1942. They lived in the house until 2001.

There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and casement windows. The brickwork features rendered string courses. The roofscape features brick chimneys and finials.

1931 Economical Eggless Puddings for Harassed Housewife.—Well-tried Plum Pudding: 2 cups plain flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup currants, 1 cup raisins, a little candied peel, 1 teaspoon spice; rub dry ingredients together; mix with 1½ cups hot water, in which melt 1 tablespoon butter or dripping and 1 teaspoon carbonate of soda. Boil three to four hours. Serve with custard. Ginger Pudding: Beat 2 tablespoons of dripping, sugar, and golden syrup; well melt to make easy, then add 1 cup of milk, in which is dissolved half teaspoon carbonate of soda; stir well in 1½ cups s.r. flour, 1 teaspoon ginger, ½ teaspoon spice, and a pinch of salt. Steam in greased mould for two hours. Serve with custard or white sauce. Sultana Roll: 2 cups s.r. flour, ¼lb. suet chopped finely, 1 cup sultanas; mix well with cold water; roll in floured cloth. No 65 (previously known as No 125) Hubble Street is a single-story cottage constructed in rendered masonry with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a good example of Federation Bungalow style house. The place has been renovated in the 21st Century. It is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The facade features a full-width bullnose verandah supported on timber posts. There is a timber framed garage at the front of the lot on the south side.

1921 Obituary. The funeral of the late Mr. Joseph Porter, engine-driver, of the Fremantle Municipal Tramways, where he had been employed for the past fifteen and a half years, took place on Tuesday afternoon, the 16th inst, and was attended by many friends. The deceased, who was 60 years of age, was born in Belfast, Ireland, but had been a resident of this State for the last 27 years. A widow and daughter survive him. The funeral cortege moved from his late residence, 125 Hubble-street, East Fremantle, and proceeded to the local cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest in the Church of England portion. Craig, S.M.) conducted an inquest concerning the death of Mrs. Sarah Ann Sorrell (49), of 125 Hubble-street, East Fremantle. Mrs. Sorrell was injured on July 2 and died at the Fremantle Hospital on the following day...William George Sorrell, lumper, husband of the deceased, said that he left his home about 7 p.m. on July 2 and returned at 10.45, when his son-in-law told him that Mrs. Sorrell had had an accident. Witness saw his wife lying on the bedroom floor in a large pool of blood. She had had "a little too much wine," he stated. (reference)

Inter-War / Simple Inter-War Bungalow Porch House

No 65 Petra Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is symmetrically composed with a full width skillion roofed verandah supported on timber posts. A gable is located central on the verandah and marks the entry. There is a central door flanked by sets of casement windows. The lower walls are face brick and the upper walls are rendered. The roofscape features a rendered chimney and finials. The place sits on a limestone foundation.

No 65 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with a fretwork frieze. The front facade features casement windows. The entry door is on the north elevation under the return verandah. It has a centrally located front door that is flanked by windows. The roofscape features rendered chimneys.

No. 65 (previously was no. 135) Sewell street is a single story house constructed in timber framing and fibrous cement cladding with a gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a Federation Bungalow style house that was extensive modified in the late 1950s. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a full width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is mostly filled in with fibrous cement cladding and glazed louvres.

Late Victorian / Early Federation Villa with Queen Anne Influences

No. 66 (previously was no. 142) Duke Street is a single-storey house in random course limestone and brick construction with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. A broken back roofed verandah spans part of the front facade.

The place is consistent with the pattern of development in Plympton and plays an important role in the pattern of development of a working class suburb.

HISTORY

1911 Gingerbread. Put a cup of treacle, a quarter pound of butter and cup of milk into a saucepan. Put it on the fire, but do not boil. Stir till dissolved, then pour into a basin, into which has been sifted three cups of flour, a tablespoonful of ginger, a teaspoonful of carbonate of soda and a pinch of salt. The facade features a full-width bullnose roofed verandah supported on square timber posts. The verandah has been enclosed on the south facade.

No 66 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in tuck pointed brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a very fine expression of the Federation Queen Anne style. The front facade is symmetrically planned with a full width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with a curved valance board. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. The entrance addresses the street and is located under the return verandah to the south. There are spayed bay windows at the verandah ends. The bay windows feature casement lights. Gabled roofs sit over these. The roofscape features rendered chimneys and finials.

No. 66 (previously was no. 98) East street is a single storey house constructed in timber framing and rusticated weatherboard with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a rich expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a polygonal bay window in a thrust bay to the north. The front door is setback and there are French doors to the south. The facade features a skillion roofed verandah on timber posts. The verandah follows the plan of the house and extends over full frontage. A particular feature of the eaves is their corbel brackets.

No 66 View Terrace is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a corrugated iron roof. There is a two storey addition to the rear. It is a much altered expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a full width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts set over battered piers. The gable bay features a set of casement and fixed light windows. The place sits on limestone foundations. The lower walls are face brick and upper walls are rendered. The roofscape features a brick chimney.

HISTORY

1939 J. W. Ferguson, of the Fremantle Rifle Club, was the outstanding rifleman. Besides securing the splendid tally of 69 out of the possible 70 points over the 700 yards range, he continued on to reach 103 out of the possible 105 points and won a club tankard. (reference)
1947 A 12ft. dinghy which was washed away from the beach at Rottnest Island on January 14 has been discovered at Jurien Bay, about 40 miles further north. The dinghy is the property of Mr. J. W. Ferguson, of View-terrace, East Fremantle, and was washed away by a large wave when the owner was attending to some fishing lines on the beach. (reference)
