HISTORY

1931 Fierce Storm Strikes Fremantle. A Narrow Escape. Evidence of narrow escapes from death or serious injury by Mr. and Mrs. Bennett was contained in the heaps of bricks on the floor beside the bed in which they were asleep. A brick chimney had been blown down with such force as to crash through both roof and ceiling, leaving a gaping hole several feet across. Their two children were sleeping in an adjoining room, which was least damaged of any. Striking the house at the rear, the wind tore the iron roof away practically bodily, and some of the sheets of Iron were carried a quarter of a mile. A piece of 4 by 3 jarrah roofing timber was picked up this morning two streets away. "It was a like big-gun bombardment," said Mr. Bennett this morning when recounting his experience. We thought daylight would never arrive as we busied ourselves trying to find a dry spot in the house in which to place the furniture." (reference)

1938 Swamped By Wave Yacht Sinks Off Rottnest. About a mile north of Bathurst Point, Rottnest, in 60 feet of water, is a comparatively new 16-foot yacht. It sank there on Tuesday after being swamped. After searching for it on Wednesday and yesterday, the owner has abandoned his efforts. On Tuesday, William Sims (34), signal man, of Rottnest Island, went for a fishing cruise in his yacht Belinda, with Harry Bennett (42), of Irwin-street, Fremantle, who was spending the Christmas holidays at the island. When they were about a mile north of Bathurst Point on the return journey, the wind suddenly changed from east to south-west, and the vessel, temporarily out of control, was swamped by a big wave. "We were taken unawares," said Mr. Sims yesterday, "and the boat sank in about five or 10 minutes, the air in her decking preventing her from going straight under. I had worked her throughout the winter without any trouble, and I think that the lead ballast this time slipped across into her stern, causing her to heel over." Both occupants kicked off their clothes and started the mile swim to the shore. "We received a bit of a shock," said Mr. Sims, "but we thought we could make the distance easily." They had only been swimming about 10 minutes when they were picked up by the yacht Sobrona, which was being sailed by Mr. K.G. Mitchell, of 16 Lincoln-street. Highgate, who had seen the other men go under and immediately went to their assistance... (reference)

Wilson, of Norseman, was married to Mr. William Silverlock, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Silverlock, of Waitara, New South Wales. Miss Mercia Brooks (cousin of the bride) presided at the organ. Her veil of silk tulle and silver lace, held in place with a coronet of pearls and French orange blossom, formed a fan-shaped train. Miss Lavin Woods and Miss Del. Thackrah were the bridesmaids and wore tight-fitting frocks of powder blue georgette, falling in points to the ankle and trimmed with godets of silver lace. Little Jean Wellington, the flower girl, carrying a basket of blue delphiniums, was a miniature of the bride in frilled ivory georgette, worn with a silver Juliet cap and shoes. Mr. W. Briggs was best man and H. Wilson (brother of the bride) groomsman. After the ceremony, Mrs. Wilson received a large number of guests at the Fremantle Town Hall. HISTORY

1939 Lumper’s Death. Run Over By Engine. Fremantle Inquest Opened. While cycling to work on February 2 along the roadway behind Victoria Quay, William John Fuller (57), lumper, widower, of Bellevue-terrace, Fremantle, had both his legs cut off when struck by a locomotive returning from the wharf to the railway yards near C shed. He died about three hours later in the Fremantle Hospital. Yesterday an inquiry concerning the fatality was opened before the Acting-Coroner (Mr. F. G. Higham, J.P.) in the Fremantle Courthouse... Oscar George Edberg, of Irwin-street, East Fremantle, a head-shunter employed by the Railway Department, said that about 7.45 a.m. on February 2, he was returning with the locomotive to the railway yards after taking some trucks along side a vessel at C shed. Witness was standing on a step of the engine on the left-hand side and another shunter was standing on a step behind him. The driver and fireman were in the cab. The driver blew his whistle before returning from B shed and again about 20 yards later. Witness had a clear view ahead except for about six feet immediately on the right of the engine. He saw Fuller riding in front and watched him for about 15 yards. He was then about eight or ten feet to the right of the railway track and appeared in no danger so no further warning was given by the driver... (reference)

1939 Lumper’s Death... A finding of accidental death was returned by the Acting-Coroner (Mr. F. G. Higham, J.P.) in the Fremantle Courthouse yesterday, when an Inquiry into the death of William John Fuller (57), lumper, of Bellevue-terrace, Fremantle, was concluded...Sergeant Growden examined the witnesses. Oscar George Edberg, of Irwin-street, East Fremantle, head-shunter whose evidence-in-chief was given last week, was cross-examined when the inquest was resumed yesterday. He told Mr. de Garis that he had been employed on the wharf for 12½ years, and he contended that all the proper precautions had been taken by the train crew. Questioned by Mr. Rudinger, he said that he thought that after the cyclist had swerved towards the locomotive it would have been impossible to avoid an accident. He told Mr. Dunphy that he thought Fuller had a fright from a passing motor truck, and, as a result, he swerved towards the locomotive. At one moment the three vehicles were practically in line, and the accident occurred almost immediately afterwards. At no stage was the locomotive traveling at more than six miles an hour. The Acting Coroner said that the evidence before him was sufficient to enable him to come to a decision as to the cause of death and announced his findings. (reference)

1947 Thirteen new cars have been put on the road in the last week, according to the Police Traffic Office. Several new trucks and waggons were also purchased. Details of their owners are:...Morris saloon: Oscar George Edberg, Irwin Street, East Fremantle... (reference)

1947 Gruesome Find Sequel To Deckhand's 20th Birthday. Death was closely shadowing Ripley as he stepped ashore from the gang plank of the Trident at Fremantle on November 8, to celebrate his 20th birthday. When soldier William Bradford, of East Fremantle, last saw him a few hours before he died, the seaman was sitting on the roadway after alighting from a taxi a few feet from the spot where his body was later found. Bradford told A/SM R. P. Rodriguez that shortly before closing time on November 7, a barman at the National Hotel, Fremantle, asked him if he would show a colored seaman (whom he identified later as Omer, at a line-up aboard the Trident) where to get a taxi. As he was taking Omer to the railway station rank, he saw Ripley, who "appeared to be very drunk", staggering across the footpath in Market-Street. Omer, Bradford said, took Ripley by one arm and then walked him over to a taxi. Bradford added that when he told taxi driver Joseph Davies to drive the 2 men to North Wharf, Davies refused to do so at first unless he accompanied them also. Ripley pulled a wallet from his pocket, and Bradford told him to put it back. After Davies had promised to drive him home to East Fremantle afterwards, Bradford said he got into the front seat of the taxi and Ripley and Omer climbed into the rear. Then, at Omer's request, they drove to a cafe in High-st, where Omer collected 6 bottles of beer which he had left there previously. They then drove to North Wharf, pulled up near where Ripley's battered body was later discovered. As Omer stepped from the taxi, Bradford added, one of the bottles of beer he was carrying slipped from the parcel and shattered on the roadway. Omer, he said, appeared to be sober. (reference)

1947 Lineups On Trident. Following the early-morning discovery of Ripley's body, PCC Sgt. George Robert Johnson drove into Fremantle to find taxi-driver Joseph Davies. From there, with Davies and Det. W. Neilson, he went to East Fremantle to locate soldier William Bradford. Returning to North Wharf, Johnson saw Omer in a police van. Telling to Coroner Rodriquez what he said took place, Johnson said Omer told him he went ashore by himself the previous night. Omer, Johnson added, told him that he returned to North Wharf "with the taxi man. Only the taxi man." Asked what time it was then, Omer replied, "About 8 o'clock." Johnson said he was present on the Trident during a line-up and was also present when Davies touched Omer on the shoulder and identified him as the man who had been in the taxi with Ripley the previous night. Bradford identified him after. Later Omer, according to Johnson, when told that Ripley was dead and that he (Omer) was suspected of having murdered him, stated: "Is that boy dead? Why would I kill him?" After saying "I will tell the truth. My Koran makes me tell the truth," he allegedly gave a statement. (reference)
