Inter-War Bungalow w Arts & Crafts Influences

No 60 Staton Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a part width bull-nosed roofed verandah. The verandah terminates at the gable bay and is supported on stop chamfered timber posts. The gable bay features a decorative trellis and a double hung sash window under a sunhood. The trellis appears to be a later addition. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The walls are limestone with brick quoins with rendered sills. The roofscape features stout brick chimneys.

1935 Nominations for Municipality. The following nominations hare been received for the vacancy In the East Ward of the North Fremantle Municipality:—Robert Bracks, Phillip Giles, William James Payne, and Henry John Howson. The seat was previously occupied by Mr. R. McKell, but it was declared vacant under section 41 of the Municipalities Act because Mr. McKell absented himself without leave from more than three consecutive meetings of the council. 1935 Burglary. The second burglary at Fremantle within three days took place on Monday night when a mixed goods shops, owned by Phillip Giles, was broken into and tobacco and cigarettes, valued about £20, were stolen. (reference)
1941 Auction on June 27, an auction was held on the premises of 60 Staton Road among the goods under the gavel were a plethora of furniture and a Humber Roadster motor car in good running order. (reference)
1943 Commendation. LAC (temp Sgt) John Edward Gough, of 60 Staton-road, East Fremantle, for bravery and initiative, N-W area. When an aircraft made a forced landing in swamp country 25 miles from the nearest station LAC Gough, a member of the security guards unit, obtained a very old and practically unseaworthy launch and together with a fitter and native guide set out to rescue the crew. No 60 Allen Street is a single storey house constructed in tuck pointed brickwork with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return verandah. The verandah is set on posts. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and single pane, double hung French sash windows. The roofscape features a pair of rendered chimneys.

1921 Mr. Alan Barlee, a Sydney native, who is well known in Western Australia, has had the good fortune to win the first prize in the big Shanghai lottery. Mr Barlee, who was a lieutenant commander in the Australian Navy during the war, went to Kobe, Japan, last year to take up an appointment with a shipbuilding company Mr. Barlee cabling to her brother, Mr. A. H. O'Connor, of Sydney, states that the prize is worth “many thousands,” and that she and her husband intend returning to Australia next March. (reference)

1945 Boy Hurt On Way To School. While on his way to school about 9 a.m. today Geoffrey Wallis (about eight) of Allen Street, East Fremantle, was struck by a motor truck at the corner of Tamar and Adrian Streets, Palmyra. He was taken by St. John ambulance to Fremantle Hospital suffering from abrasions, concussion and shock and later was transferred to a private hospital in East Fremantle. No 60 Oakover Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone and painted brick with a gable tiled roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a full width skillion awning. A prominent gable extends above the awning. The front elevation features timbering to the gable and a pair of multi paned double hung sash windows. The building is set on the limestone foundations. The roofscape features a rendered chimney and finials.

A masonry balustrade spans between the piers. The gable bay features a set of casement windows under a tiled awning. There is a central door flanked by casement windows.

1934 Newcastle-Street Collision. York Man Injured. James McMahon (60), of York, was taken to the Perth Hospital last evening suffering from abrasions to the head and shock, sustained in a collision at the intersection of Newcastle and Fitzgerald streets, Perth. A motorcar driven by Francis Frederick White, of Mears-street, York, with James McMahon, as passenger, was travelling west along Newcastle-street at 5.40 p.m. when it collided with another car driven by Frank Bousfield, of 60 Irwin-street, East Fremantle. No. 60 (previously was no. 120) King Street is a single storey cottage constructed in face brick and rendered decorative details with a 'M' format corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and sets of three casement windows. The facade features a full width bullnosed verandah supported on turned timber posts. There is a spindle frieze between the timber posts.

Post War Early Modern Bungalow Porch House

No 60 View Terrace is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is an expression of the Post-World War II Porch style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a hipped thrust bay that incorporates a modest porch. The porch is supported on rendered piers. There is an addition to the front of the house to the west side of the thrust bay. The addition reflects the architectural style of the place. The front elevation features sets of double hung sashes and fixed light windows. The entry door is located under the porch. The place sits on limestone foundations. The front elevation lower walls are brick and the upper walls rendered. The side elevations are face brick. The roofscape features rendered chimneys.

No 57 (previously know as No 106) Hubble Street is a single-story house constructed in timber framing, plastic and corrugated iron cladding with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is an eclectic expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The place is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and a part-width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts and has a St Andrews Cross pattern balustrade. The timber posts and balustrade are a later addition. The thrust bay has a pair of double hung sash windows. There is a central door flanked by French doors.

No. 60 - 64 (previously was no. 136 - 140) Duke Street is a triplex constructed in rendered masonry with gabled corrugated iron roofs. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style applied to a triplex. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with three tall rendered masonry brick gables featuring cartouches. They have matching bull-nose roof verandahs supported on timber posts.

1944 Body Found in Harbour. A body, identified as that of Michael James Coughlin (48), married, lumper, of Duke-street, East Fremantle, was found floating in the Fremantle Harbour, about 6.45 am yesterday, after an eight-day search. It was reported to the Fremantle police, on October 17, that Coughlin was descending a rope ladder, suspended from a ship to a coal-hulk, when he apparently slipped and fell into the water. Workers on the hulk hurried to assist Coughlin, but could not find any trace of him. His body was recovered about 100 yards from where he first disappeared. (reference)

It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a door to the south and a double hung sash window to the north. The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah supported on timber posts. A two storey addition is set back from the front of the lot. The front entrance has been relocated.
