Inter-War, Bungalow Porch House

No 35 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in roughcast rendered brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War California Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with an offset gabled entry porch. The porch is set on paired timber posts. There is an offset front door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a casement window. There is a set of casement windows protected by a tiled sunhood. The roofscape features a rendered chimney. Originally the lower walls were face brick and the upper walls roughcast render. The lower walls have been rendered.

1941 Embossed Cloque. The lovely ivory satin, used for the bridal gown worn by Miss Aleix Marie (Jimmie) Carlson for her wedding to Maurice Albert Cairnie, was a gift from the bride's aunt and the material is twenty years old. The frock was designed with uplift bodice and swathed hipline, forming a bustle at the back. She wore a top-knot to hold her veil in place, and carried gladioli and roses. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. O. Carlson, of Ord-street, Fremantle, and the groom the only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Cairnie, of Dalgety-street, East Fremantle. (reference)

The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with thrust gable bay and a half timbered gabled entry porch. The porch is set on paired timber posts that rest on masonry piers. The half timbered gable bay features a set of casement windows under a sunhood. There is central door flanked by casement windows. The roofscape features a brick chimney.

No 37 Dalgety Street -‘Corindhap’- is a single storey house constructed in tuck pointed brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return hipped roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. There is a tall half-timbered gable with rough cast render over the front rooms. The front facade features a lead light casement window and a corner suite window. The entrance door is on the north elevation under the return verandah. The roofscape features rendered chimneys.

1931 The South Fremantle Ladies' Hockey Club held another very enjoyable outing last Sunday, about 90 enthusiastic young people filling three lorries which journeyed to Serpentine. The event of the day was a hockey match-Boys v. Girls. The boys say they won by 3-2, but the girls know different. 1932 East Fremantle Football Club -Various toasts were honored during the evening and many sterling tributes were paid to the service given the club by the late Mr. H. L. Reilly, who died recently. He was vice-president. The adoption of the report was moved by Mr. W. H. Kitson, M.L.C., who pointed out that, socially, and from the administrative standpoint, as well as on the playing field, East Fremantle had proved a splendid model...The president referred to the death of Mr. Reilly and members stood in silence as a mark of respect. No 38 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in tuck pointed brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. A vertical timber balustrade runs between the posts. The verandah terminates at a thrust bay on both ends. The half-timbered gable bays feature sets of three casement windows and sunhood.

HISTORY

John Hart (1887 - 1961) operated a mechanics and garage at 91 Canning Highway East Fremantle from 1926- 1960s. He married Minetta Ermyntrude Acton/Smith in 1927.

No 39 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. The building was originally an expression of the Art Deco style. It has since been modified with Federation Bungalow style influences. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and a part width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. The verandah extends over the thrust bay to act as a sun hood. It has also been extended to the south to form a carport. The original verandah on the north side of the house has been removed. The thrust bay features a set of casement windows. There is a central door flanked by a set of casement windows. Original windows have been replaced with casement and fixed lights. Walls were rendered at a later date. The roofscape features rendered chimneys and finials.

1943 The Late E. Fletcher. The death occurred yesterday of Edmund Fletcher, who had been actively associated with the turf in this State over a great number of years. Hailing originally from Victoria, where he had a good deal of success as a trainer, he raced many horses on Perth courses prior to going to the goldfields a little over 25 years ago. Returning to Fremantle with a smart sprinter named Green Baron, he won several races with that gelding. Later he raced Brownface and Flaming Star. With Brownface he won the Goldfields Newmarket in 1927 and with Flaming Star he won the Hannans Handicap in 1932. The last horse to carry his colours was Gunga Das, who in addition to winning races on the flat was also a successful hurdler. Of a quiet, unassuming nature, he had a wide circle of friends who will regret his passing. (reference)

There is a central front door flanked by casement windows. The thrust bay features casement windows under a sunhood. Face brickwork is to sill height and the upper walls are rendered. A checkerboard band runs at wall plate height. To the north there is an integral garage with a curved parapet.

Federation Bungalow and Federation Free Classical

No 41 Dalgety Street is a single storey shop and attached house. The place is constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the both the Federation Free Classical style (shop) and Federation Bungalow style (house). 
The shop has a corner entrance with a pair of three panel doors. The door is flanked on each street frontage by timber framed display windows. There is a suspended skillion roofed canopy over these openings. A rendered parapet wall extends above the canopy and features an entablature that includes dentils. The masonry has been painted. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.

HISTORY

1938 The Late Mr. Bernard McCloskey, storekeeper, of East Fremantle, died at his residence, 41 Dalgety-street, East Fremantle, on Tuesday last and the funeral took place yesterday morning at Fremantle Cemetery, where the remains were interred in the Roman Catholic portion… Mr. McCloskey. who was born at Claudy, Co. Derry, Ireland in 1864, came to Australia when 21 years of age, and spent 10 years in Melbourne before coming to Western Australia. On arriving in this State he settled in Fremantle and had resided there for the past 42 years. He entered the service of the Gaols Department in 1895 and rose to the rank of principal warder, from which he retired after 26 years' service. He then took an extended trip to his homeland and on his return commenced business on his own account as a grocer in Dalgety-street, East Fremantle. He also purchased the wholesale Jute and Bag Store, trading under the name of Whitford and Co., Henry-street, Fremantle, and he was actively interested in both enterprises until the end of last year, when ill-health compelled his retirement. He was a prominent friendly society member and was a past district president for this State of the H.A.C.B.S., with which he was closely and actively associated for 53 years. Mr. McCloskey was of genial and charitable disposition, and his quiet and unobtrusive support of many worthy causes afforded him a great deal of satisfaction, and he will be sadly missed. Mr. McCloskey was also well known in the Hines Hill district where he had farming interests for some years. He leaves a wife, one son, one daughter and three grandchildren to mourn their loss. Its key feature is a flat roofed entry porch on the corner. The porch is supported on Tuscan columns surmounted by a decorative gable. The front door is located on the corner and set deep in an alcove within stepped reveals. The remaining walls have casement and fixed light windows. The window on the north elevation has a flat roofed sunhood. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.

No 54 Dalgety Street-"Gambier’’ is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a very fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width, return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with brackets. A timber balustrade runs between the posts. The facade features a pair of bay windows. The bay windows feature sets of casement windows. Half-timbered gables sit above the bay window. Decorative chimneys create a characteristic roofscape. Render bands run across the facade.

HISTORY

1922 Fremantle. The Magistrate gave his decision in the adjourned case in which P. H. Patten was charged with having committed a breach of the Navigation Act. Mr. F. G. Unmack appeared for the Shipping Master, and Mr. J. C. Forman for the accused. Patten was ordered to pay a fine of £2, with £6 10s. costs. M. K. Neilson, captain of the steamer Sydhavet, charged with having committed a breach of the same Act, was fined £2 and costs £5 15s. (reference)

1925 Mr. S. Drysdale, well known at Fremantle, declares that he has a motorcar at last. Recently he purchased a 14-40 h.p. Sunbeam, and the comfort of it, its speed, its smoothness under all conditions, were a revelation to him. (reference)

1927 The late Mr. Simon Drysdale a prominent sawmilling engineer, passed away on January 12, at his residence, "Gambier," Dalgety-street, East Fremantle, at the age of 62 years. Prior to his arrival in this State in 1888, the deceased was connected with the sawmilling industry in Gippsland and was in charge of the mill that provided all the sleepers for the construction of the railway from Alberton to Melbourne. For the past five years of his residence in Western Australia, he was connected with the mills at Sawyers Valley, and later with Messrs Port, Honey and Co, Denmark. Mr. Drysdale then went into partnership with Mr. W. B. Sexton, and acquired jarrah mills at Newlands, Jardanup, Noggerup, and other centres, and the partnership continued for 10 years. In 1912 he received an appointment as mill manager for Millars T. and T. Co., Ltd., and shortly afterwards he went on an extended tour of the United States, Canada, Europe and England to report to his principals on the latest machinery and sawmilling methods of those countries. Whilst in England Mr. Drysdale was offered and accepted the position of general manager of the company's thirteen mills in Tasmania, but after 10 years' service in the southern State was forced to resign owing to ill-health. After 12 months' rest his health improved to such an extent that he decided to accept the position of manager of Millars' mills at East Kirup, and filled that position for the past three years. 1938 Northam. A civic farewell was tendered to Mr. V. L. Bode and Mr. A. Shilling by the mayor (Mr. H. C. S. Colebatch) and councillors in the lesser town hall on Monday afternoon last. Mr. Bode has been transferred from the position of manager of the National Bank at Northam to Fremantle...Tribute was paid to the services rendered to the Northam Agricultural Society by Mr. Bode, who has held the office of president for a number of years...On the previous Friday evening a valedictory social was tendered to Mr. and Mrs. Bode by the members and friends of the Presbyterian Church, when presentations were made to them. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. The half timbered gable bay features a pair of double hung sash windows. There is a central front door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a double hung sash windows. The render to the walls is an alteration. The roofscape features a rendered chimney.

She was a foundation member of the North Fremantle Tennis Club, and on account of her genial disposition was very popular and had made a large circle of friends. The funeral cortege moved from the residence of her father, Mr. Francis Coe, Pearse-street, North Fremantle, on Wednesday, August 8, and proceeded to St. Patrick's Church, thence to the Fremantle Cemetery. Inter-War / Bungalow Porch House w Georgian Influences

No 65 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with a fretwork frieze. The front facade features casement windows. The entry door is on the north elevation under the return verandah. It has a centrally located front door that is flanked by windows. The roofscape features rendered chimneys.

1933 Petrol Prices. Case of the Service Station Owners (To The Editor) Sir.—I would be pleased if you would find space in 'The Daily News' to put before the public the case for the service station proprietor in the trouble over the reduction in the price of petrol. It seems to me that the oil companies have given very little consideration to the retailer in the matter—in fact they don't seem to care much how he survives...Many Free Services I have to keep an attendant, pay rent for the pumps, rent for the property, electric light to advertise the oil companies' products and pump up the tyres of the motorists with free air so that they can drive off with the petrol I have sold at no benefit to myself...I am in the garage business because of a war disability. If I were still able to follow my pre-war occupation I would not for one moment remain where I am. The average service man cannot afford to be a philanthropist, yours, etc. W. H. 1937 The funeral of the late Mr. W. H Nelmes of 11 Woodville-street, North Perth, loving husband of Mrs. Dolly Nelmes, and fond father of Rhona, took place on Thursday last... Born in Victoria 54 years ago, the late Mr. Nelmes came to this State in his early boyhood and by his genial disposition won a large circle of friends in sporting and business interests...Among those present were Messrs. 1949 Man’s Collapse. After collapsing at a trotting meeting at Richmond Park, East Fremantle, about 8.30 o'clock last night, Gordon Virgo (61), of Dalgety-street, East Fremantle, was taken in a St. John ambulance to the Fremantle Public Hospital and detained for observation. (reference)
