ARCHITECTURE

No 53 Canning Highway is a single storey house in rendered masonry with a hipped tiled roof. It is a much-modified expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width hipped roofed verandah on timber posts over a concrete floor. Steps lead down to the garden. A centrally placed front door is flanked by large ‘picture’ windows. A thrust bay has been introduced to the west side of the elevation with a hipped roof over it.

1915 The Rhodes Scholar W. Caldwell Selected. The latest Western Australian scholar to be afforded the magnificent opportunities presented under the Rhodes scholarship scheme is Mr. William Caldwell, who is now in camp, fitting himself for active service, and who formerly belonged to Scotch College, and, more latterly, the University of this State. As showing the broadness of the education system in this State, it may be said that Mr. Caldwell went step by step from the Beaconsfield State school through to the University. He is only 23 years of age. And was born at Fremantle. (reference
