Interwar, Porch House Bungalow w Federation Influences

No 67 Fortescue Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on rendered piers. A rendered balustrade runs between the piers. The verandah construction may be a replacement for a previous timber detail. The verandah terminates at the gabled thrust bay. The half-timbered thrust bay features double hung sash windows under a sunhood.

Interwar Gable Bungalow w Arts and Crafts Influences

No. 67 (previously was no. 145) Sewell street is a single story constructed in timber framing and fibrous cement cladding with a gabled tiled roof. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked casement windows. The place is dominated by a tall half-timbered gable supported on masonry piers. There is a ventilation grill to the top of the gable.

1930 Fall From A Motor Truck. A Plasterer's Death. An inquest concerning the death of Charles Arthur Norman Parker (33), plasterer, of Petra-street, East Fremantle, who died in the Fremantle Hospital, on February 7, as a result of injuries he received when he fell from a travelling motor truck on Canning-road… Arthur Downan, builder's labourer, of 145 Sewell-street, East Fremantle, said that he was riding on R. Rennie's motor truck, travelling along Canning-road, to Welshpool, to work. There were eight other men on the truck, which was driven by Thomas Orgies. Deceased was sitting at the back of the truck in the centre of the tray. At the corner of Murray-street and Canning-road, the truck swerved to the right to pass a cart travelling in the same direction. The swerve was not sudden, but Parker lost his balance and fell… (reference)

No 67 Dalgety Street-‘’Gwalia’’ is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts on masonry piers. A curved valance board and balustrade span between posts. The entrance is on the north elevation under the return verandah. There are single pane double hung sash windows across the front facade. The roofscape features rendered chimneys.

No 67 (previously known as No 127) Hubble Street is a single-story cottage constructed in rendered masonry with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a good and simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. There are a number of modifications to the windows and finishes. It is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by replacement windows. The windows are a central fixed pane flanked by casement windows. The facade features full-width bullnose roofed verandah supported on timber posts. There is a parapet wall to the north lot boundary.

It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style with later modifications. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width bullnosed verandah supported on timber posts.

1919 Death on January 10, at 133 King-street, East Fremantle, John Charles Fletcher, the dearly beloved husband of Annie, and fond father of Charles (returned), Mrs. W. Moore, Alfred, William, and Harry Fletcher, aged 60 years. (reference)
1931 Funeral. Mr. John Charles Fletcher, plasterer, of 133 King street, East Fremantle, died on Saturday last after a long illness. Mr. Fletcher was born in Sheffield, England, and his parents brought him to Australia about 50 years ago. He came to Western Australia 35 years ago and settled at East Fremantle, where he had lived ever since. Soon after the outbreak of war he volunteered for active service and left with the 1st Tunnelling Corps. He remained at the front for about three years and was invalided home. Of quiet disposition, Mr. Fletcher was very popular and won the esteem of all with whom he came into contact. The funeral took place yesterday in the Church of England Cemetery, Fremantle. The chief mourners were Mrs. Fletcher (mother), Mrs. W. H. Moore (sister), Messrs. Alfred, William and Harry Fletcher (brothers), Miss Ida Moore (niece), Peter Fletcher (nephew), Messrs. R. G. and Les Brown and Mesdames Farrington, Irving and Smith. The pall-bearers were Messrs. J. McFadden (president), W. C. Sweet (secretary) and J. H. Truscott, of the East Fremantle sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' League, T. Brown (Perth, sub-branch of the R.S.L.), W. Pescud (Fremantle sub-branch of the R.S.L), and D. Sturrock (T. B. It is an example of a Federation Bungalow style house that has been substantially remodelled. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The windows appear to have been modified from their original form. The facade features a replacement verandah.

Federation Gable Villa w Gothic Influences

No. 68 (previously was no. 140) Sewell street is a single house constructed in limestone and brickwork with a gabled corrugated iron roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber columns. A prominent gable extends above the verandah and features a bullseye vent. The north side is built to the boundary with a lime stone parapet wall. The entry door is on the south side under the verandah. The openings to the front facade have brick quoins. The roofscape features a brick chimney with decorative render treatment.

HISTORY

1908 Early Morning Fire. At East Fremantle. Family Burnt Out—Boy's Presence of Mind. ...a fire, which, by good fortune, combined with the presence of mind of a boy of 14, was unattended by fatal results, occurred at Plympton. Mr. William James Spong, a signalman employed at the Fremantle railway station left his weatherboard, 143 ( sic) Sewell-street, East Fremantle, for work at 11 o'clock last night, leaving his wife and three children, as usual, in the house. Mrs. Spong and her family retired as usual. A few minutes before 4 a.m., Master W. Spong, the eldest of the three children, awoke, and got up to obtain a drink of water. He no sooner opened the door of the bedroom when he was met by a volume of smoke, and immediately he was seized with the fact that the house was on fire. ...Mrs. Spong was in a delicate state of health, and was able to move from the burning building with difficulty. Young Spong, seeing that the fire was rapidly approaching the bedroom door, did the most sensible thing possible. With a coolness which has since been described as praiseworthy in the extreme, he caught hold of the two children, and passed them out of the open window to a place of safety… When the firemen arrived, the whole house was well alight, and it was at once seen that there was no chance of saving Mr. Spong's house. Post War Porch House w Arts & Crafts Influences

No 68 View Terrace is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. A two storey addition has been added to the rear. It is an expression of the Inter-War Porch style. The place has undergone extensive modifications. All that remains of the existing house is the front wall and part of the side wall. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a generous gable roofed porch. The porch is supported on timber posts. The porch roof extends over the front façade to form sunhoods. There is an offset front flanked by windows and a series of small pane casement windows. The windows are in sets with brick sill and head details. The walls are rendered with face brick details.

No. 68 (previously was no. 100) East street-’Craignair’ is a single storey house constructed in limestone and rendered brick with a hipped ‘M’ format iron roof. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by windows and sidelights. The facade features a bullnose verandah supported on timber posts with a decorative frieze set over a concrete floor.

1906 A farewell social was tendered to Mrs. Hughan, who has been on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Coss of 'Craignair', East-street, Fremantle, at the High-street East Wesley Hall on Thursday evening… The Rev. Francis Mason proposed the health of Mr. and Mrs. Coss, and in doing so spoke of their value as workers in the church. Mr. Netherway, in a few appropriate remarks, supported the toast, which wras drunk with musical honors. 'Mrs. Hughan,' proposed by an old friend of the family, Mr. W. No 68 Irwin Street ‘Slymburn’ is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a typical expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part with hip roofed verandah. The verandah has been enclosed and is supported on masonry columns. The gable bay features a window under a tiled awning.

1928 Accidental Drowning …on December 21…Thomas Callaghan found the body of William Shannon (68) floating in the river near, the Perth Flying Squadron boathouse. At an inquest, conducted by Mr. J. J. Lloyd, Acting Coroner, a finding was returned indicating that deceased met his death by drowning, the cause being unknown (reference)

1945 Gaol For Pillager. Three months' imprisonment was imposed on 53-year-old lumper Thomas Albert Callaghan when he admitted in Fremantle Police Court today a charge of unlawful possession. Mr. F. M. Read, S.M., said that he could not discriminate between Callaghan and others who had been sent to gaol for taking ship's cargo. Callaghan was leaving the wharf on a bicycle about ten o'clock last night when a Harbour Trust patrolman noticed that a billy on the handlebars appeared to be heavily laden. He examined the billy and found 30 galvanised pipe bends and couplings and five more in Callaghan's pocket. Callaghan said that someone had put them in his billy and pocket. Harbour Trust Detective Mann said that Callaghan should not have left work until 11 p.m. The bends and couplings which were worth 1/3 each formed part of a ship's cargo. (reference)

No 68 (previously known as No 120) Hubble Street is a single-story house constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The place is asymmetrically planned with an offset front door flanked with a single pane double hung sash window. The facade features a full-width bullnose roofed verandah supported on square timber posts.

HISTORY

1936 Leighton Beach Rape Case. On the night of December 27 a 17 year old girl was raped by four men on Leighton Beach…. One of the Crown witness’s was Alice May Greer, of 120 Hubble-street, East Fremantle who went to Leighton beach with the other girl on the night... (reference) The four men were convicted. 1941 Shortly before he was reported missing, presumably in Crete, Private Ernest Wright (second from left) sent this happy group photograph to his wife. Private Wright was mining at Coolgardie before he enlisted in September 1939. No. 68 Allen Street is a single storey house constructed in painted brick and rendered bands with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with thrust gable bay and a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is set on timber posts. An elaborate wrought iron balustrade spans between the posts. The thrust bay features a set of three casement windows. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a set of three casement windows. A set of concrete stairs leads from the verandah to the garden. The roofscape features a pair of chimneys.

The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and part width return hipped roof verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. Part of the verandah has been enclosed with timber panels. The frontage features a centrally located front door hopper light flanked by picture and double hung sash windows.

1946 Electric Shock. Wool Scourer in Hospital. Suffering from electric shock, Eric Albert McCallum (28), wool scourer, of 68 Glyde-street, East Fremantle, was admitted to the community ward of the Fremantle Hospital yesterday afternoon for observation. McCallum was operating a degreasing machine at the meat export works at Robbs Jetty, South Fremantle, about 4 p.m. when the power plug pulled out of its socket. He switched the current off and picked up the cable leading to the machine. There was a lot of water in the vicinity at the time, and McCallum received a shock which spun him round and threw him to the floor in a dazed condition. His workmates telephoned for an ambulance, which took him to the hospital. His condition is not regarded as serious. (reference)
