Federation Free Classical

The Town Hall & Chambers is located at 135 Canning Highway and is part of several Public Buildings in East Fremantle, built between 1899 - 1902.

The Town Hall has a fine façade rendered in the federation free classical style. The place is a two-storey building constructed in limestone and rendered-brick with a hipped corrugated-iron roof. The ground floor elevation features arched-head, timber-panelled doors, flanked by pairs of low-arched head windows set over a rendered plinth.

HISTORY

The funeral of the late Mr. John Taaffe, employee of the East Fremantle Council, took place yesterday afternoon, and was very largely attended. The cortege left his late residence. Duke-street, East Fremantle, for the Fremantle Cemetery, where the re-mains were interred in the Roman Catholic portion. The chief mourners were Mrs. Taaffe (widow), Kathleen Taaffe (daughter), Mrs. James (sister-in-law), Mrs. Purcell (mother-in-law). and Messrs. D. James and J. Purcell. The pall-bearers were Messrs. R Thompson (Mayor), H. Parker (Town Clerk), C. Glasson (Health Inspector), J. Doyle. M. Fahey, and A. Corish. The coffin bearers were his fellow-employees, Messrs. F. Jarvis. J. Grady, E. Ellwood, and P. Rush. (reference)

138 Canning Highway

ARCHITECTURE

No 138 Canning Highway is a single storey residence constructed in rendered brick with a hipped Decramastic tiled roof. The place is an example of the Federation Queen Anne style. It is almost completely masked by a two storey multi residence building at the front of the lot. The multi residential building is an expression of the Post WWII Perth Regional style. The lot spans between Canning Highway and Hillside Road. The Federation Bungalow has undergone numerous changes including the modification of openings, rendering over brickwork, re-roofing and remodelling of the gardens. The place features original timber framed windows including double hung sashes. The roofscape features rendered chimneys. A concrete stair and elevated slab link the two buildings. The place retains its form and some of its details. The original tiled roof has been replaced with the current tiles. There are additions to the rear.

140 Canning Highway

ARCHITECTURE

No 140 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed (c 1984) in rendered brick and masonry house with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is set on a steeply rising site and is a fine example of the Federation Queen Anne style. The lot spans between Canning Highway and Hillside Road. The place is symmetrically composed with a full width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and polygonal bay windows. The bay windows feature double hung sash windows. Each bay window extends above the verandah and features a hipped roof. The roofscape features tall render capped chimneys. There is a broad set of steps leading from the verandah to the garden.

HISTORY

Herbert Baker was a prominent butcher in East Fremantle ( see the history of Glasson Park). His daughter Yvonne Baker lived there from 1934.

Church of the Immaculate Conception

HISTORY

1940 Roman Catholic Church. Tenders are invited for the erection of the first portion of the complete design of a Roman Catholic Church at the corner of Canning-highway and Preston Point-road, East Fremantle. Plans prepared by Messrs. Howard Bonner and Tracey provide for a brick building about 84ft. deep and 48ft. wide, which will include a nave with side aisles, a narthex, and a baptistry, with a choir gallery over the entrance. The church will accommodate 384 worshippers, but the complete design provides for 600. The exterior will be in plain brickwork except the entrance, which will be finished in cream cement. Internally the church will have a cream brick dado 5½ ft. high and plaster above. A flat-pitch asbestos roof will be constructed. (reference)

1940 Church Opening. The new Church of the Immaculate Conception erected at the corner of Canning-highway and Preston Point-road, East Fremantle, will be blessed by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Perth Dr. Prendiville at 9 a.m. tomorrow. His Grace will preside at Solemn High Mass immediately after the Blessing. The new church has been built at a cost of £3500. (reference)

HISTORY

158 Canning Highway was the home of Horace Hill Parker, the first Town Clerk of East Fremantle. Parker lived at this address until his death in 1944. Thereafter, his daughter Dorothea Laura Hill Parker lived at this residence. She was the first West Australian-born woman to practice as a doctor in WA. ARCHITECTURE

No 169 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable decramastic tiled roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width hip roofed verandah. The verandah is set on timber posts. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts and terminates at the gabled thrust bay. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by a side light and double hung sash windows. The half timbered thrust bay features an arched window. The roofscape features a pair of render capped chimneys. The garden has been replaced by a car park.

1940 Funeral of the late Mr. Henry Frederick Miles… who was born at London, England, in 1868, came to Australia when 19 years of age and settled in Victoria for a few years, during which time he was clerk of scales to the Victorian Racing Club. He arrived in Western Australia fifty years ago, and will be remembered by older residents as manager of Mr. Charles Allen's aerated water factory in Fremantle, which position he occupied for many years. After his retirement he had resided with his son, Mr. Elvin Miles, at Nungarin. Mr. Miles was a very old member and a Past Chief Ranger of Court Unity No. 8254 A.O.F. He was very well known and highly respected by a wide circle of friends… (reference)

1940 Funeral of the late Mr. James Johnston Macdonald, J.P., late of 171 Canning road, East Fremantle… Mr. Macdonald was an accountant at the York Flour Mills for some years, and left to open his own business as a general agent, principally for Elder. Smith and Co., Ltd., H. V. McKay, and the Winterbottom Motor Co., Ltd. Several years later he sold out and retired for a while, but soon sought fresh activity, and joined the Public Works Department. After striking the rear of a car travelling in an easterly direction in Canning-highway, East Fremantle, about 7.20 p.m. on Friday, Margaret Kathleen Shanahan (17), probationer nurse, of 171 Canning highway, East Fremantle, was thrown from her bicycle on to the road. The car was driven by Walter Andrew Cornish, of 11 Walter street, East Fremantle. The accident happened at the corner of Osborne road opposite a doctor's surgery. After receiving medical attention from the doctor Miss Shanahan was taken to the Fremantle Hospital with possible back injuries. Her condition was later reported as satisfactory. (reference)

ARCHITECTURE

No 162-172 Canning Highway is a set of single storey shops constructed in rendered masonry with skillion metal deck roofs. The roofs are skillion roofs behind a rendered parapet wall. It is a good example of the Federation Free Classical style. The place is a set of six shops with a full width, return skillion roofed awning. The awning is suspended off the front facade. A parapet wall extends above the awning. Parts of the parapets are treated with classical entablatures. All shops retain stall boards and some retain ingoes indented entries. The majority of the shopfronts have authentic metal-framed windows and highlights.

No 177 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in painted and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War California Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a part width, timbered, gabled verandah. The verandah is the dominant feature of the place. The verandah is supported on paired timber posts set on battered limestone piers. A rendered balustrade spans between the piers. Steps go from the driveway up to the verandah. The roofscape features a brick chimney and finials. The central entry is a pair of glazed doors flanked to the west by a further pair. To the east there is a bay window with casement lights.

It is a very fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a gabled thrust bay and a part width, return bull nose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with brackets. A broad flight of steps leads down to the garden from the verandah. The gabled bay features a two-pointed arched window with fixed casement windows and hopper lights. There is a central door flanked by French double hung sash windows. Walls are random coursed limestone with rendered quoins.

The place is an expression of the Federation Queen Anne style that has been extensively modified. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width, return hip roofed verandah. The verandah terminates at the diagonal gables and is supported on paired steel posts. The steel posts replace original timber. There is a central door set in an arched alcove flanked by roundel windows. Diagonally oriented bay windows with casement and hopper lights flank the roundel windows. Gables sit above the diagonal windows. Details include string courses and rendered architraves.

ARCHITECTURE

No 199 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a very fine expression of the Federation Queen Anne style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a pair of gable thrust bays and a full width return bull nosed roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets and a timber frieze. There is a central door flanked by bay windows. The bay windows have elaborately detailed half-timbered gables over them. The roofscape features a pair of render capped chimneys. All openings have quoins.

1928 Safe-Breaker At Work. East Fremantle Report. During last night a grocer's lock-up shop occupied by H. Woodhouse at the corner of East-street and Canning-road, East Fremantle, was entered by thieves, who broke open the office safe. The safe, which weighed about two hundredweight, was removed from the shop to the backyard, where the side was wrenched off.
