ARCHITECTURE

No 196 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a gabled thrust bay and a part width return skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with a decorative valance board. The gable bay features half timbering, a louvred vent and casement windows under a sunhood. There is a central door flanked by casement windows and a corner suite. The roofscape features several rendered chimneys and finials.

HISTORY

1916 Funeral. The Friends of the late Mrs. Emma Josephine Wadham, relict of the late Mr. William Wadham, M.P., Adelaide, South Australia, and mother of Mr. R. A. Wadham, Fremantle, are respectfully invited to follow her remains to the Fremantle Cemetery. (reference) 

1918 Engagement is announced of Doris May, elder daughter of Mr. R. A. Wadham, of “Ryllon,”(sic?) Canning-road, East Fremantle, to Warrant-Officer W. B. Robinson, D.C.M., only son of Captain and Mrs. W. C. Robinson, district superintendent of Bunbury. (reference)

1922 Marriage on October 14, at St. John's Church, Fremantle, by the Rev. Hyde, George, elder son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Turner, of Ventnor-avenue, West Perth, to Phyllis, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Wadham, of Rhyllon, Canning-road, East Fremantle. (reference)

1930 Funeral. The late Mr. Reginald Arthur Wadham died at his late residence, Rhyllon, 196 Canning-road, East Fremantle, on Monday last. Although he had suffered indifferent health for sometime, the end came quite unexpectedly. Since February of this year his health has not permitted him to take an active part in business… (reference)

1933 Death on February 24, at East Fremantle, Horace Russell, beloved husband of Gladys Jones, of 196 Canning-road, East Fremantle, and father of Jack, Lola, Donald and Betty Jones; aged 50 years. (reference)

1938 The 10 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs C. S. Coats(see right), of Canning road, East Fremantle, who was awarded a Grade IV exhibition in pianoforte and also gained 90 marks in Junior Grade at the Trinity College examinations last August.
