ARCHITECTURE
No 169 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable decramastic tiled roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width hip roofed verandah. The verandah is set on timber posts. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts and terminates at the gabled thrust bay. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by a side light and double hung sash windows. The half timbered thrust bay features an arched window. The roofscape features a pair of render capped chimneys. The garden has been replaced by a car park.
HISTORY
1920 A One Legged-Soldier And A Motor Car. ...from Mr. W. Boulter, of Canning-road, East Fremantle, who writes: "In reference to a paragraph appearing in your paper of 21st inst, re treatment of a returned soldier by a Fremantle firm. I beg to contradict the statement that it was the firm of Lawton and Boulter, I having severed my connection with that firm over 18 months ago. I trust you will give this publicity in your paper."... 1924 Death On November 24, at Montrose, Canning-road, East Fremantle, Sarah Ann, dearly beloved wife of Harry Samuel Newson, and mother of Ernest and Walter Newson, Horace E. Lindquist, Mrs. W. Chambers, Mrs. C. G. Stuart, and Mrs. Frank Cook. (reference)
1932 Funeral: The Friends of the late Mr. Henry Samuel Newson, of the Distillers' Agency Ltd., Perth, and H. M. Biegel, Bunbury, are respectfully informed that his remains will be interred in the Methodist Cemetery, Fremantle. (reference)
1942 Death LAC John Gordon Nicholson (Wireless Operator, RAAF), at Townsville, Queensland, as result of flying boat accident (previously reported missing), dearly loved only son of Police Inspector and Mrs. Nicholson, and beloved brother of Iima and Patricia (169 Canning-road, East Fremantle); aged 21 years and 11 months.
