Federation Terrace w Georgian / Regency Influences

Nos 29-31 Staton Street are a pair of single storey houses constructed in limestone and brick with an ‘M’ format corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The place has been restored. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width return curved roof verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. There are front doors either side of the party wall. The doors are flanked by single pane double hung sash windows. The roofscape features tall rendered chimneys. The walls are limestone with brick quoins.

HISTORY

1922 Damage estimated at £50, was caused to a motor lorry which was in collision with a tramcar in High-street Fremantle, on Thursday. The motor lorry was being driven from the premises of the Western Iron Works and the driver (George McCorkindale) was unable to stop it before a collision with a passing tram occurred. (reference)

1924 Traffic Prosecutions. Nine persons were charged with having committed various breaches of the Traffic Act, and fines ranging from 10s. to £1 were imposed. Municipal prosecution. Douglas J. Emery was charged with having commenced to erect a building before plans and specifications of the same had been approved of by the East Fremantle Municipal Council. He was fined. (reference)

1941 Stolen Brandy. Two soldiers, James Barnard and Arthur Stiles, who admitted to having stolen two bottles of brandy worth £1/7/, the property of Joseph Mcmullan, were each fined £2. (reference)

1944 The engagement has been announced of Kathleen, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. McMullan, 31 Staton road, East Fremantle, to Alastair (Sgt., R.A.A.F.), only son of Sgt. (A.LF.) and Mrs. R. Salmond, 36 Hampton road, Fremantle, formerly of Bourke-street, Kalgoorlie. (reference)
