ARCHITECTURE

Late Victorian / Early Federation / Georgian Influences

No. 54 (previously was no. 82) East street is a single storey house constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by windows. The facade features a skillion roofed verandah on timber posts over a concrete floor.

HISTORY

1931 Funeral. The Friends of Mr. Edwin Jones, of the Fremantle Harbour Trust, and of 82 East-street, East Fremantle, are respectfully invited to follow the remains of his late dearly beloved wife, Florence Emma, to the place of interment, the Baptist Cemetery, Fremantle. (reference)

1931 Obituary. The late Mrs. Florence Emma Jones, wife of Mr Edwin Jones, of 82 East-street, East Fremantle, died on Saturday last. The deceased was born at Adelaide, South Australia, and came to Western Australia 37 years ago. She lived at North Fremantle for many years, and for the last 12 years had resided at East Fremantle. The late Mrs. Jones had always been an earnest church worker, and was a member of the Baptist churches at South and East Fremantle. She was of bright and cheerful disposition, charitable and always considerate for others. She leaves a husband, one son and three daughters, a mother, brother and four sisters to mourn their loss. In 1933 John Payne moved with his family from the house next door at 56 (ex 84) where he lived from 1928. In 1928 his six year old daughter Betty died. From 1926-1927 he lived next door again at no 58 (no 86)

1938 Engagement. Mr. and Mrs. J. Payne, of 82 East street, East Fremantle, wish to announce the engagement of their eldest daughter Molly, to Raymond Willis, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Bicker, of 7 Bindaring-par, Cottesloe. (reference)

1942 Collision at Fremantle. Young Woman Killed. Perth, Jan. 27.  When a motor cycle carrying three people and a car collided at the corner of High and East streets, Fremantle, about 7.45 last night, a young woman was killed and two other people were injured. 1942 Death on January 26, at Fremantle, suddenly, Dolly Gloria Enid, dearly beloved daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Payne, of 54 East-street, East Fremantle, beloved sister of Molly (Mrs. Bicker), Jack and Nancy; aged 22 years. (reference)

1945 Marriage on December 9 at St Patrick's Church, Guildford, NSW, Mervyn Jack, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Payne (54 East-street, Fremantle), to Phyllis Rae second daughter of Mrs and the late Alderman Tamplin (Craigalee, Guildford, Sydney). (reference)
