ARCHITECTURE

No 11 Angwin Street ‘Swanville’ is a two storey limestone and brick house with a hipped, gabled and ‘M’ format corrugated iron roof. It is a very fine expression of the Federation Queen Anne style and is one of the finest and largest historic houses in East Fremantle. Constructed c. 1896. The residence is situated on a steeply sloping site and features a tennis court, a gazebo, retaining walls and well groomed gardens.

It is asymmetrically composed with an irregular plan. The front elevation features a thrust gable bay, corner gable bay and a wrapping curved roof verandah. The verandah terminates at thrust bays at both ends. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts with post brackets. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. There are many roof forms, bay windows, diagonal bays and other features.

Samuel Titus Mitchell (1824 - 1877), and his wife Susanna, arrived Fremantle in 1852 on the Will Watch, with only son John Elijah Mitchell (b 1847) and settled in Perth where they established Mitchell & Son (cnr William St and St George's Terrace), Bakers and Confectioners. 1897-1899 Eldest son Ernest C. Mitchell worked with his father in Mitchell and Sons- 105 (now 85) High St, Fremantle, confectioners and bakers. J. T. Mitchell and his father had brought with him from England the first lollie making machinery ever exported from England. Ernest was educated at Fremantle Grammar School. His early years were spent in the North-West as a jackeroo on Rotton's station, Gascoyne River, where he became an expert in the native dialect… Despite his family connections Ernest ran as a Labor candidate for Toodyay in 1911: “He always supported and voted for Labor, having a keen sympathy for the under dog.” (reference)

13 Jul 1916 death of Sarah at ‘Swanville’, Bellevue Road, East Fremantle:

Mrs. Mitchell was a daughter of that hardy pioneer and ship-builder, the late Mr. John Charles Mews, who came to this State in 1829 in the ship Rockingham. The spot where they landed was called after the ship. The blacks disputed their landing, and they found it necessary to entrench themselves to fight the aborigines. It might be interesting to mention that the Rockingham was careened on an adjacent bank, from which she slipped off and was lost. The bay in the vicinity, was named after the incident, Careening Bay. (Mackay, Queensland), and Harold Mitchell (Bunbury), Mrs. W. Rumble (Katoomba, NSW), Mrs. P. Hawkins (Maylands), and Mrs. N. Milne (Wagin); aged 79 years.

“The late John Elijah was the only descendant of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Titus Mitchell, whose well-kept confectionery shop, on Dyer's corner (now Elder, Smith and Co.), will be remembered by residents of Perth of a generation ago. Samuel Titus Mitchell established Perth's first ice factory in 1860, and John Elijah was the State's first manufacturer of jam upon an extensive scale. The Mitchell family had among their employees in the jam factory two highly intelligent natives, named Geordie and Chum-Chum, who were useful yachtsmen in assisting John Elijah when he conveyed large quantities of figs from Freshwater Bay (now Claremont) and from Smith brothers' orchard near Dalkeith (now Nedlands). Mitchell's ice and raspberry jam of the 60's made famous the wares of Samuel Titus and John Elijah throughout the length and breadth of the land… (reference)

1930 East Fremantle Win Again. With 4.6 to spare East Fremantle, last year's premiers, won their second league match of the season when they defeated Subiaco on Saturday. B. Digglns (Subiaco) is seen in hot pursuit of J. Brown (East Fremantle), who is about to pick up the ball. (reference)

1947 Mr. L. J. Brown, former East Fremantle wingman, died last night after a long illness. Mr. Brown was a life member of the W.A.N.F.L as well as the East Fremantle club, of which he was secretary for many years. He was particularly well known for his fostering of junior football and the club owes no small part of its success to his enthusiastic scouring of the Fremantle districts for prospective players. He gave the Brown Medal for the "best and fairest" player in the Fremantle Ex-scholars' Association. He… was a keen supporter of junior tennis. At a meeting of the WA. National Football League last night the president (Mr. W. Stooke) informed members of the death of Mr. Brown and they stood in silence for two minutes. The funeral will take place at the Fremantle cemetery tomorrow morning. (reference)

The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gable bay and a full-width return bull-nosed roof verandah. The verandah spans both storeys and is supported on timber posts. On the first floor there is a cast metal balustrade and timber handrail. The gable features decorative timber treatment and a circular vent. The place has an irregular plan and the mass features a rich roofscape that includes gables and render-capped chimneys.

HISTORY

The Boat Builders House, now the Left Bank

Thomas and Fanny Carroll purchased the land in 1889 and from there ran a boat building business. Thomas William Whiteley, built the home as well as other historical buildings in Fremantle – the house became colloquially known as ‘The Boat Builder’s House’.

In 1940, Alan Harry Sargent and his sister Dorrie purchased the house from the Carroll family. Dorrie Sergeant later married newspaper editor Ted Driver and they took up residence in the stately Federation home.

Ownership went to the Metropolitan Regional Planning Authority in the 1970’s for $104,000 to make way for changes to Riverside Road. Local residents considered ‘The Boat Builder’s House’ an important landmark in the area. The East Fremantle Town Council submitted petitions to the MRPA to lease the old building which, by now, had fallen into a sad state of neglect.

The East Fremantle Town Council took over the property and in 1981 called for tenders for the restoration of the home, for use by the public. Clough Engineering Group were successful with a proposed Bar, Cafe and Restaurant. The Left Bank Bar, Cafe and Restaurant opened in 1990.
