ARCHITECTURE

Federation / Gable Domestic Carpenter

No 32 (previously known as No 60) Hubble Street is a single storey house constructed in timber framing and corrugated iron cladding with a gabled corrugated iron roof. It is an unusual expression of the Federation Bungalow style. There have been numerous modifications to the place. The place was asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width curved skillion roofed verandah. The verandah was supported on square timber posts. Part of the verandah was enclosed with fibrous cement sheet walling. The gable bay features a single pane double hung sash window with a curved sunhood. The second gable, verandah and zincalume cladding were later modifications (1990).

White from Alice Wright via vendor sale.  From other documents that I have it appears that Mr and Mrs White were renting the house prior to purchase (from at least 1953).  The house remained in the White family until 1990 when Mrs White passed away”. No 33 (previously known as No 69) Hubble Street is a single story house constructed in brick with a hipped tiled roof. The place was originally an expression of the Federation Bungalow style but has been adapted in the Post-World War II style. It is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by windows. The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah supported on brick piers. Between the brick piers is a brick wall. Almost all openings have been re-worked to include casement and picture windows. The original brickwork and render bands remain.

No 34 (previously known as No 64) Hubble Street is a single story cottage constructed in limestone and rendered brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a fine and simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah supported by timber posts over a timber floor. All reveals have rendered brick architraves.

HISTORY

1930 Accident. Volunteer Cadet Shot. Rifle shooting practice at the Swanbourne Rifle Range had a dramatic sequel at Fremantle yesterday afternoon, when a member of the cadet volunteer forces, Thomas Robinson (16), of Glyde-street, East Fremantle. was accidentally shot in the side by a companion. The victim was hurriedly removed to the Fremantle Hospital by the St. John ambulance. It was found that the bullet had passed through his body. It was reported to the Fremantle police that Robinson was returning home from Swanbourne in company with Leonard James Nicholl (16), of, Hubble-street, East Fremantle, and Gordon McAlphine (17), of Wood-street, East Fremantle. The boys were carrying .303 military rifles, which they had used during the day at the range. While walking along Point street, Robinson found a £1 note, and as he picked it up, Nicholl took his gun from his shoulder and playfully pointed it at Robinson, demanding that he give him the money. The gun then exploded, and Robinson dropped to the ground, the bullet having entered his right side.. (reference)

No 35-37 (previously know as No 71) Hubble Street is a duplex pair of single story cottages constructed in limestone and brickwork with gabled corrugated iron roofs and decorative gables. They are a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The pair is symmetrically planned with a full width bullnose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts on rendered masonry piers. Between the piers is a rendered masonry balustrade. Front doors are set either side of the party wall and are flanked by pairs of double hung sash windows. A parapet wall divides the pair.

No 36 (previously known as No 68) Hubble Street is a single story house constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped corrugated iron roof. The place is asymmetrically planned with a full width return bullnose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on square timber posts. The verandah stops at an extension to the north. The extension has French doors to the verandah. There is a central door flanked by double hung sash windows.

HISTORY

1912 Witness: Neil Michelson, a shunter, spoke to meeting the woman and McPhie, and the woman asked him to direct her to the Railway Hotel, as a man was following her, and had threatened to rob her. He did not take much notice of the woman at the time, as she appeared excited. When she asked to be shown the way to the Railway Hotel she went on ahead of him along Eleanor-street. He was cutting off the corner near De Fratuas` boardinghouse, and the woman was then at the intersection of Eleanor-street and Forrest-street. He shouted to her to turn round there. He had got ahead, and looking behind him saw a man coming round the corner. The man caught up to the woman near the Public Buildings, and witness heard something like a cry, a blow, and a fall. He then saw the woman on the ground and the man running away. Going up to the woman he asked her what was wrong, and she said the man had taken her hand bag and her ticket to Day Dawn... (reference)

Simple Porch House w Queen Anne / Austerity Influences

No 38 (previously known as No 70) Hubble Street is a single story cottage constructed in rendered masonry with a hipped tiled roof. The place is an example of a Federation Bungalow adapted in the Post-World War II period. It is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and part width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. The entrance has been relocated to the side of the thrust bay. The thrust bay features a sliding window. Almost all openings have been re-worked to include casement and picture windows.

1917 Death of Arthur Victor Humphries, dearly beloved husband of May Humphries, and father of Victor and William, and step-father of Charles, Reginald, and Irene, of 70 Hubble-street, East Fremantle. (reference)

1919 Influenza. There was a substantial rise in the number of new cases of influenza reported to the health authorities yesterday, the total being 17, compared with 11 on the  previous day. The deaths, on the other hand, fell from eight to three. Eliza M. Humphrys, of 70 Hubble-street, East Fremantle, died at the Alma-road hospital, while a lady resident of Mt. Lawley, and John Woodthorpe, of 403 Oxford-street Leederville, died at the Perth Public Hospital. Of the new cases 17 came from various parts of the municipality of Perth, six from Fremantle, and one each from Maylands, Midland Junction, Subiaco and Osborne Park. (reference)

No 40 (previously known as No 72) Hubble Street- ‘Ecclefechan’- is a single story house constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is an eclectic expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The place is asymmetrically planned with a thrust bay and a part width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on turned timber posts with lacework frieze panels. The verandah has been modified with a small gable to the northern side.

Federation Gable Domestic Carpenter with Gothic Influences

HISTORY

1898 Matilda Drummond was a resourceful and enterprising woman. She started her own store at 44 Hubble St. in 1898, took on a partner George Lacey in 1901, and then, after his death in 1909, moved to this corner store at 48 George Street (diagonally across the road) before retiring in 1919, handing on the business to her nephew Alfred James Marie. 1909 The funeral of the late Mr. George Lacey, grocer, of Hubble-street. East Fremantle took place on Friday afternoon last in the Presbyterian portion of the Fremantle Cemetery, and was largely attended. The chief mourners were Mr. James Stevens, Mr. Fred. C. Hawkins, and Mr. E. L. Marie. The pall-bearers were Messrs. F. Eardley, M. Brown. J. D. McLean, H. H. Wood, M. C. Bradbury, and Mr. Henning. Among those present were members of the Free Gardeners' Friendly Society. The Rev. Robt. Hanlin officiated at the grave, and the funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Donald J. Chipper. 1930 The corner of Hubble and George streets. East Fremantle, was the scene of an accident last Wednesday, when a motor cycle ridden by David Carlyle (19), of 35 Malcolm street, East Fremantle, and carrying John Duffield (17) of Sewell-street, East Fremantle on the pillion came Into collision with a motor car. Both cyclists were thrown to the ground. Duffield receiving internal injuries and Carlyle lacerations to the scalp and a fractured collarbone. The motor car was driven by Henry William Denford, of 772 Beaufort-street. (reference)

Julie Patterson: ‘‘My Nanna and Pop, Ernie & Thelma Smith used to live and run the butcher shop here when I was a child. I don't know the actual years. I was born in 1961 so I'd say they were there during 50's, 60's and early 70's. Maybe earlier. There was a stable out the back as well. Great memories of visiting as a child.”

HISTORY

AIF 1914, Joseph Kitson (Regimental number 1014) Occupation Boundary rider, 86 Hubble Street, East Fremantle, Single, Age at embarkation 22. Next of kin Mrs. J. Sumpton NAA Record  AIF Record 

1925 George Arthur Morris (1896-1970), from the Morris Family (see Notable people) enlisted in November 1915 and embarked on the HMAT Miltiades (A28) on 12 Feb 1916 from Fremantle with the 11th Battalion. He returned in 1917 after he was wounded and became deaf. He married Doris Hopetown Pridmore in June 1922, and had two sons. They lived here for a year in 1925.

1918 First prize is awarded to Mrs. Webster, 84 Hubble-street, East Fremantle. (reference)

1918...in the Fremantle Police Court yesterday, two prosecutions were taken against persons who witnessed claim cards for enrollment on the West Province Legislative Council rolls, without first satisfying themselves that the information on the cards was correct. (reference) Constable Thompson, of East Fremantle said that "T. Harwood," the signature of the claim card, was not the householder at No 84 Hubble-street, as indicated on the claim card.

1932 Mr. Angus Ross and Family, of 84 Hubble-street, East Fremantle, desire to express their sincere and heartfelt thanks to all friends for kind acts, beautiful floral tributes, and written and verbal communications of sympathy during their recent sad bereavement.
