ARCHITECTURE

No 169 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable decramastic tiled roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width hip roofed verandah. The verandah is set on timber posts. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts and terminates at the gabled thrust bay. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by a side light and double hung sash windows. The half timbered thrust bay features an arched window. The roofscape features a pair of render capped chimneys. The garden has been replaced by a car park.

ARCHITECTURE

No 162-172 Canning Highway is a set of single storey shops constructed in rendered masonry with skillion metal deck roofs. The roofs are skillion roofs behind a rendered parapet wall. It is a good example of the Federation Free Classical style. The place is a set of six shops with a full width, return skillion roofed awning. The awning is suspended off the front facade. A parapet wall extends above the awning. Parts of the parapets are treated with classical entablatures. All shops retain stall boards and some retain ingoes indented entries. The majority of the shopfronts have authentic metal-framed windows and highlights.

1931 Butter Substitute. Sold As Dairy Butter. While a customer was making a purchase of what she believed to be butter, at the shop of Adelaide Hobson... an inspector walked in and wished to buy a packet of the mixture. "Oh, no; that's not for you," said the vendor, but the inspector had wide powers under the Act and he seized upon the so-called butter which had been handed to the customer. It was a result of this incident that Adelaide Hobson was the defendant in the Fremantle Police Court, on Saturday morning when she was summoned for selling a food which was not of the quality and substance demanded... No 182 Canning Highway- Ryhall- is a single storey house constructed in limestone and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a very fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a gabled thrust bay and a part width, return bull nose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with brackets. A broad flight of steps leads down to the garden from the verandah. The gabled bay features a two-pointed arched window with fixed casement windows and hopper lights. There is a central door flanked by French double hung sash windows. Walls are random coursed limestone with rendered quoins.

No 183 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. The place is an expression of the Federation Queen Anne style that has been extensively modified. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width, return hip roofed verandah. The verandah terminates at the diagonal gables and is supported on paired steel posts. The steel posts replace original timber. There is a central door set in an arched alcove flanked by roundel windows. Diagonally oriented bay windows with casement and hopper lights flank the roundel windows. Gables sit above the diagonal windows. Details include string courses and rendered architraves.

W. C. Barrett and family lived at 36 Glyde Street from 1909 until they moved into this house in 1932.

There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and a pair of double hung sash windows. Walls are random coursed limestone with brick quoins. The roofscape features large rendered chimneys.

The gable bay features half timbering, a louvred vent and casement windows under a sunhood. There is a central door flanked by casement windows and a corner suite. The roofscape features several rendered chimneys and finials.

ARCHITECTURE

No 199 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a very fine expression of the Federation Queen Anne style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a pair of gable thrust bays and a full width return bull nosed roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets and a timber frieze. There is a central door flanked by bay windows. The bay windows have elaborately detailed half-timbered gables over them. The roofscape features a pair of render capped chimneys. All openings have quoins.

1928 Safe-Breaker At Work. East Fremantle Report. During last night a grocer's lock-up shop occupied by H. Woodhouse at the corner of East-street and Canning-road, East Fremantle, was entered by thieves, who broke open the office safe. The safe, which weighed about two hundredweight, was removed from the shop to the backyard, where the side was wrenched off. No 200 Canning Highway-’Templetonia’ is a single storey house constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a very fine expression of the Federation Cottage Ornée style. It is asymmetrically composed with a gabled thrust bay and a part width return bull-nose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with brackets and a lacy carved frieze. The gable bay features a curved head window with double hung sash windows, sidelights and a fanlight. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. Walls are random coursed limestone with brick quoins. The roofscape features tall render capped chimneys.

It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a full width return bullnose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with brackets. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. A broad set of steps descends to the garden from the verandah. The gable bay features a bay window with double hung sash windows. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The roofscape features tall render capped chimneys.

Reginald D’Arcy Streat was born Percy Reginald Streat in Victoria in 1880. his family came to Kalgoorlie in the early 1900s and in 1902 Reg married Emily Lloyd in Subiaco . They had three children Isabella, Patricia and Lyle.

No 205 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in tuck pointed brick and rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is good expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation was symmetrically planned with a full width hip roofed verandah. There is an addition to the west resulting in an asymmetrical elevation. The verandah is set on stop chamfered timber posts with brackets. There is a central door flanked by casement windows. The roofscape features a rendered chimney. Render bands run across the facade.

"This property is very unique as it had been built purposefully as a general practice surgery and Dr’s residence. In its 100 yr old history only 4 medical practitioners have worked and lived here. Dr. Stubbe built the dwelling and was the local medical practitioner for 10 years here. He was followed by Dr. Uther Baker (2 of his 4 children were born here). Dr Baker practiced here for 30 years. He retired from being a general Practitioner and worked for the Red Cross. He was 102 years old when he died. Then Dr. Lindsay Redgrave a surgeon at Fremantle Hospital, worked in this practice as a GP from 1961 to 1973, where he died on the job. He was also the Town’s sporting Dr and medical officer. Dr. David Nelson commenced working and living here in 1974 and continues to practice here as a General Practitioner. (2 of his 3 sons were born here)." (Correspondence with Suzi Nelson 2019)

No 211 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width return hipped roofed verandah. The verandah is set on turned timber posts supported on rendered piers. A rendered balustrade spans between the piers. The thrust bay features a set of casement windows under an awning. The front door is located on the west elevation under the return verandah. The place has sets of casement windows including a corner window suite. The roofscape features a pair of rendered chimneys.

ARCHITECTURE

No 217-219 Canning Highway is a two storey Masonic lodge constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Free Classical style. The front entrance is a stylised temple with a plinth, pairs of fluted pilasters, an entablature with metopes and then a tympanum, with the Masonic symbol of set square and dividers in bas-relief. The hall is much simpler with brick walls and high level windows for each floor level. There are additions to the rear. The original landscape has been replaced with a car park. The place is consistent with the building pattern in the Precinct. The place plays an important role in the pattern of development of a middle class suburb.

HISTORY

1933 New Masonic Hall. Construction at East Fremantle. Among the building, activities at East Fremantle is a substantial Masonic hall which is being erected on a site in the Woodside Estate, at the corner of Canning-road and Dalgety-street. The building will probably be completed early in November, and occupied before the end of the year. (reference

1933 New Masonic Temple. Opened at East Fremantle. The East Fremantle Masonic Hall was opened last Monday night with the meeting of the Loyal Westralian Lodge. The attendance, which was estimated at more than 250, was one of the largest to witness a Masonic ceremonial at Fremantle. Twenty-nine Grand Lodge officers and representatives of the District Grand Lodge of Scotland were present, and some brethren had come long distances to attend the ceremony. During the evening, at the request of the Master of the Lodge (Mr. G. Sinclair), the Grand Master of the Western Australian Constitution of Freemasons (Mr. F. A. McMullen) set in position an inscribed stone of Mundaring granite to mark the completion of the edifice. (reference)

‘Tiffie’ Cooke was a prominent and prolific musician, dancer and dance teacher in East Fremantle in the 1920s and 1930s. ( see her story in the Notable People section). In 1921 she went to train at the Melbourne Royal Academy of Dancing- After returning to Perth, she opened her first dance school in the Victoria Hall in Fremantle, teaching ‘up-to-date’ dancing. (reference) Concerts by Tiffie’s dancing girls were then given virtually twice a year until 1941. (reference) Tiffie’s Dance Group performances also featured the singing and dancing talents of her good friend Miss Doris Deary (1900-1983). By 1928 Tiffie and Doris were well known in Perth and Fremantle performing arts circles. Tiffies’ brother Earle and their mother, Elsie, were also involved in the concert performances. The roofscape features render capped chimneys.

1928 Baptist Fete. A Christmas Fete held in East Fremantle Baptist Church on December 14th, proved a very happy gathering. Mrs. G. W. Simpson performed the opening ceremony, an in a jolly little speech put everybody in the proper mood for doing full justice to the fete. (reference)

1932 Arranged by the East Fremantle branch of the Returned Soldiers' League, a service was held in the morning at the Fremantle cemetery. Following an address by the Rev. W. J. ARCHITECTURE

No 238 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. The place is located on a corner lot that addresses both Canning Highway and Stratford Street. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style with later modifications. It is asymmetrically composed with a gabled thrust bay to the west side of the house and then a part width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. Sections of the verandah have been enclosed with timber framing and fibro sheeting. The entry door is located on the south face of the thrust bay under the verandah. A wide set of stairs goes from the verandah to the street. The roofscape features a tall painted chimney.

ARCHITECTURE

No 240 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is an expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on masonry piers. A painted brick balustrade spans between the posts. The masonry elements have replaced the original timber detailing. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The original walls remain tuck-pointed brick. A broad set of steps lead from the verandah to the front yard. The roofscape features a tall brick chimney.

1927 Sequel to Road Fatality. Charge of Manslaughter Fails. In the Criminal Court Yesterday, before Mr. Justice Burnevide, William Jackson Sumpton was charged with the manslaughter of Leah Eunice Saunders (20), whose death occurred at Woodside Hospital on January 26 following an accident in which she was struck by a motorcycle driven by the accused along Canning-road East Fremantle… The motor cycle swerved to the right and struck Miss Saunders, who was carried along some distance in front of the machine to a spot almost opposite the gate of Albert Mattingley's residence. The motor cycle went further on and stopped near the boundary of Mattingley's property, the rider landing a short distance away… (reference)

ARCHITECTURE

No 242A Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Porch style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust bay and a flat roofed porch. The porch is supported on rendered masonry columns. A masonry balustrade spans between the columns. The thrust bay features a set of casement windows under a sunhood. There is a central door flanked by sets of casement windows. Lower walls are face brick and the upper walls are rendered. The roofscape features a tall brick chimney and finials.

HISTORY

1933 Death on October 24, at Fremantle, David Richardson, dearly beloved husband of Elizabeth Travis Richardson, of 242 Canning-road, East Fremantle, and loving father of Donald and Marjorie; aged 63 years. (reference)

1936 Witnesses Wanted. The traffic police at Fremantle are trying to get in touch with witnesses of an accident at the Victoria Quay end of the James-street bridge on May 21, when Fader Miller (about 40), of McKimmie street, Palmyra, received spinal injuries. Miller was riding his motor cycle over the bridge, following three cyclists and a motor car driven by Ronald M. Fisher, of Canning-road, East Fremantle. When Fisher had crossed the bridge and was turning to his right on to the wharf, Miller swerved to avoid a collision with the car, and in doing so skidded and was thrown from his cycle. Miller's condition is reported to be unchanged. (reference)
