Federation, Domestic Carpenter Villa

No 70 (previously known as No 122) Hubble Street is a single story house constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The place is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and full width return skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is a replacement and supported on timber posts. The verandah spans across the thrust bay which is unusual. The thrust bay features a set of three casement windows. There is a central door flanked by a bay window.

Built between 1890 & 1915 in Workers Cottages style

No 71 (previously known as No 131) Hubble Street is a single story cottage constructed in timber framing and rusticated weatherboard cladding with a gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Cottage Ornée style. The place is asymmetrically planned with an offset front door flanked with a single pane double hung sash window. The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah supported square timber posts. A St Andrews cross balustrade spans between the timber posts. The gable wall rises above the verandah and it has an elaborately worked barge. The verandah ends are filled with lattice.

1938 Accident. During Unloading. Two mishaps of a similar nature during unloading from vessels at Fremantle yesterday afternoon resulted in the removal of two lumpers by a St. John ambulance to the Fremantle Hospital. One man, whose thigh was jammed between two large buckets, was subsequently transferred to a private hospital in a satisfactory condition, and the otner, who had fingers crushed between heavy steel plates, was detained at the Fremantle Hospital for treatment. While he was adjusting a hook to a 5cwt. bucket of superphosphate on the Whitford Point at No. 6 North Wharf shortly after 2 o'clock, Harry Thompson (43), of 131 Hubble-street, East Fremantle, was jammed between the bucket and another one which was being lowered by a crane. No 74 Hubble Street (was no 130 pre 1939) is a single-storey house constructed in timber framing and fibrous cement cladding with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The place is asymmetrically planned with a gabled thrust bay and a part-width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on steel posts. There is a central door flanked by replacement aluminium sliding windows. The gable thrust bay features the same windows. The northern section of the verandah has been filled with corrugated sheeting and timber lattice.

HISTORY

1923 Yesterday afternoon the Fremantle police received a report from the Federal Hotel, Fremantle, that a man named Robert Moss (64), had collapsed. He was conveyed to the Fremantle Hospital where life was pronounced extinct. Moss, who lived at Hubble-street, East Fremantle, was a married man, and left a large family. It is understood that he had been in indifferent health for some time. (reference)

1923 Obituary. The funeral of the late Mr. Robert Moss, of 130 Hubble-street, East Fremantle, took place on Thursday morning, November 8...a large and representative gathering of friends were present; to pay their tribute of respect to the deceased, who was well known in the district, having been foreman of- the telephones for the P.M.G. It is a simple restored expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The place is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by side lights and single pane double hung sash windows. The facade features a full-width bullnose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on square timber posts with a simple timber frieze. A vertical timber balustrade is fitted between the posts.

No 77 (previously known as No 137) Hubble Street is a single-storey cottage constructed in tuck-pointed brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by side lights and pairs of double hung sash windows. The facade features a full-width bullnose roofed verandah supported on turned timber posts with a decorate timber frieze. A vertical timber balustrade extends between posts. A set of stairs leads down the garden. 77 Hubble Street (originally 137) was built before 1909. Photos in the Fremantle City Library History Centre show the house in the 1940’s when the verandah was enclosed to make a sleep-out.

The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah supported on steel posts. A vertical steel balustrade spans between the posts.

No 92 (previously known as No 162) Hubble Street is a single-story house constructed in timber framing, weatherboard and fibrous cement sheet cladding with a hipped gabled corrugated iron roof. Some of the styling is derived from the California Bungalow style. The place is asymmetrically planned with a gable thrust bay and a gabled roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on square timber posts. There is a central door flanked by a pair of French doors. The gable bay has a set of three casement windows with a sun hood over it. Walls are clad with weatherboard to sill height and then fibrous cement sheet cladding above. The limestone steps go from the driveway to the raised garden bed and verandah.

No 93 (previously known as No 171) Hubble Street is a single storey house constructed in timber framing and fibrous cement cladding with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a Federation Bungalow that is undergoing restoration works. The place is asymmetrically planned with full width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on square timber posts. The verandah has been partially enclosed with timber framing and glazing. A vertical timber balustrade is fitted between posts on the north facade. The entry door is located along the side of the house. There is a central set of casement windows on the front facade. Rendered steps go from the garden to the verandah.

The place is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and single pane double hung sash windows. The facade features a full-width bullnose roofed verandah supported on stop chamfered timber posts.

1939 Accident. Attempt to Stop Bolting Horses. George Anthony Fossilo (52), driver of a two-horse lorry, sustained injuries to the pelvis when attempting to stop his bolting animals in the railway goods yards, Fremantle, yesterday. Shortly before noon, Mr. Fossilo, who resides at 94 Hubble-street, East Fremantle, and is employed by Thomas H. Smith, cartage contractor, of King-street, East Fremantle, arrived at the yards with 10 drums of tar for trucking. He had pulled up his horses in order to complete the consignment note at the checking office, and while he was inside, the animals took fright and bolted. Turning sharply past the structure, they swung round wildly towards the gateway. Mr. Fossilo dashed out to stop them, but was caught between the front of the lorry and the checking office, which was shifted from its supporting sleepers by about 12 inches...He remained conscious and in considerable pain, and soon afterwards was taken by a St. John ambulance to the Fremantle Hospital. His condition last night was reported as fairly satisfactory. (reference)
