ARCHITECTURE

Federation, Domestic Carpenter Skillion Cottage

No. 42 (previously was no. 78) Glyde street is a single-storey cottage built in stages. The place is constructed in timber framing and fibrous cement cladding with a gabled corrugated iron roof. Its style is eclectic. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a part-width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. There is a centrally located front door flanked by windows.

The Matilda was owned, and skippered by Captain O. R. Ohlsson, a brother-in-law of the deceased. The late Mr. Peterson erected the first house in Glyde-street, East Fremantle, and had lived there continuously until the time of his death. Until the advent of trams Mr. Peterson ran a ‘bus service’ to East Fremantle, and for the last 25 years had been in business as a master carrier.  He was a foundation member of the Lumpers' Union and also of Court Robin Hood A.O.F. He was one of the oldest residents of East Fremantle and a highly respected citizen. His kind and charitable disposition won for him the esteem of a wide circle of friends. The chief mourners were Messrs. F. R. and W. E. Peterson (sons), R. J. Louden-Smith and W. E. MacGregor sons-in-law), and Mrs. W. E. Peterson (daughter-in-law). The pall-bearers were Messrs. P. F. C. 1936 Funeral. The funeral of the late Mrs. Marie Sophia Peterson, widow of the late Frank Gustaf Peterson, of 78 Glyde-street, East Fremantle, took place in the Fremantle Cemetery yesterday...Mrs. Peterson was born at Helsingborg, Sweden, and came to Western Australia on the s.s. Port Victor in 1894 to join her husband, who had arrived two years before. For many generations her ancestors had seafaring careers, and her late father and four brothers were owner sea captains. During her 42 years' residence in East Fremantle, Mrs. Peterson endeared herself in all with whom she came in contact, on account of her attractive and kindly personality. She was particularly devoted to her home and family. Mrs. Peterson leaves two sons, five daughters and twelve grandchildren to mourn their loss. The chief mourners were  Messrs. F. R. and W. E. In 1980 Maureen Wright, the Town of East Fremantle's Recreation Officer, sought advice about starting a community centre from Catherine Doherty, her Nedlands counterpart. Doherty suggested that new East Fremantle resident Pam Jones, a former member of Tresillian, be approached to see if she would be interested in the idea of establishing a similar centre in East Fremantle. Maureen Wright and Pam Jones arranged two community meetings. Twelve people came to the second meeting—These women would form the core group of the fledgling community centre. They were Pam Jones, Joan Storer, Ann-Marie (Catton) Medcalf, Robyn Granath, Danielle Hughes, J. Karmelita, Marlene Michelides, Colleen Wallace, Nola Bindon, Sue Strange, Sandy Stock and Maureen Wright.

The Town of East Fremantle agreed with Maureen Wright's suggestion that 42 Glyde Street, originally purchased by the Council in 1978 to extend Glasson Park, would be ideal for a community centre. Once the property was secured the enthusiastic group of women set to work with gusto to transform the house. In 2014 a five year lease with an option of a further five was negotiated and signed by the Town of East Fremantle CEO and the then-Chair of Glyde-In Jono Farmer.

No. 45 (previously was no. 87) Glyde street is one of a pair of residences constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a good example of a Federation Bungalow style duplex half house. The original front elevation is obscured by a brick verandah infill. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a door flanked by small pane windows. The facade features a full-width bullnosed roof verandah supported between flanking parapet walls.

No. 46 (previously was no. 86) Glyde street is a single-storey house constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is an example of a Federation period house. The place was adapted in the immediate Post-World War II period but has since been restored to reflect its former style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features a full-width bullnose roofed verandah supported on timber posts.

It is a fine example of a Federation Bungalow style house. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width bullnose roofed verandah supported on timber posts. The openings are surrounded with brick quoins. 

HISTORY

1904 Fremantle Tramways And Electric Lighting. Election Of The Board. Another page in the history of the Fremantle Municipal Tramway and Electric Lighting Scheme will he recorded today, when the first Board of Management is elected by the ratepayers. It is provided in the Fremantle Tramways and Electric Lighting Act that the Board shall consist of five members, the Mayor for the time being of Fremantle being a member ex officio, while the four other members are to be elected by the rate payers, who, for the purposes of the election, have been divided into two sections-property owners and occupiers. Keen interest has been manifested in the present election, and most of the candidates for office on the Board have conducted vigorous campaigns. The Political Labour Party have entered into the contest, and they are running candidates for each of the seats. There is no lack of aspirants for the four vacancies, there being no less than seventeen candidates nominated: Occupiers' Seat... Walter Francis Wood, East Fremantle.

The place has a hipped decramasitc tiled roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style with later modifications. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The facade features a replacement verandah. The verandah is a full width hip roofed verandah and is supported on masonry piers.

1920 Evidence At Inquest: Gallant Attempt To Rescue Little Girl. At the Fremantle Courthouse this afternoon, the inquiry into the death of Cambridge White, who lost his life while trying to rescue a little girl, who had got into difficulties when swimming in the Swan River, near the North Fremantle railway bridge, on the afternoon of January 2. Alice Irene Hardy, 11 years of age, residing at 19 Bayley-street, North Fremantle, said she was bathing with another little girl and a boy. She could not swim, so put on some cork wings. She got into deep water, and the other little girl called out for help. Witness was not afraid. A man jumped into the water and swam to her. He told her to catch hold of him, which she did, and he started to swim back to shallow water. After going a little distance, however, he told her to let go. She did so, and sank. Mr. Kolby then swam out to her and brought her to the shore. This was the first time she had gone bathing at this spot. Albert Kolby, of 96 Glyde-street, East Fremantle, a lumper, said that at 5 o'clock on the afternoon of January 2, he was going home with deceased. When on the North Fremantle railway bridge they heard cries for assistance, and deceased took his coat and jacket off, and jumped in to assist a girl who was in the water, and who sank once before he reached her. Witness called out, "Are you all right?" and deceased replied "Yes." A little later he called out "Help," and witness went to his assistance. Just before reaching him he heard deceased say very quietly to the girl, "Let go." Then he sank, and did not come up again...The Acting Coroner concurred with the remarks, and drew attention to the fact that Kolby was a returned soldier. (reference)

Federation, Domestic Carpenter Gothic 

No. 55 (previously was no. 101) Glyde street is a single storey cottage constructed in timber framing, weatherboard and fibrous cement cladding with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with an entry porch that is off centre. The facade features a full width bullnosed roofed verandah supported on timber posts with a decorative timber frieze. The front wall has been modified to accommodate a small addition. The front addition is flanked by windows.

The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and windows. The facade features a full width skillion roofed verandah supported on timber posts. The facade has black tuck pointing and decorative render treatment. 
A carport has been added to the south side of the house in front of the verandah.

No. 63 (previously was no. 111) Glyde street is a single storey residence constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a fine example of a Federation Bungalow style house. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width bullnose roofed verandah supported on timber posts over a timber floor. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. The openings have brick quoins. The house is elevated above the garden. A timber framed stair leads from the garden to the verandah.

No. 64 (previously was no. 124) Glyde street is a single storey residence constructed in brickwork and with a hipped gable corrugated iron roof. It is a good example of a Federation Bungalow style house albeit modified around the verandah perimeter. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on concrete Ionic columns. A balustrade runs between the columns. The frontage features a central front door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and single pane double hung sash windows.

1943 Historic Ukulele: This much autographed ukulele which was used wherever a famous West Australian battalion went, until its owner was captured at Ruin Ridge, has been brought back to this State. It was the property of Corporal Harold Smith whose parents reside at 64 Glyde Street, East Fremantle. Corporal Smith was invariably called on to play and sing at camp concerts but it was during the siege of Tobruk that the ukulele and its owner were most in demand. Deciding that the ukulele should be a permanent memento of the battalion, men scratched sketches of three rats at the top of it and then added the words "of Tobruk." From then on members of the unit from officers down to privates inscribed their names back and front of the ukulele until it was fully covered with more than 200 signatures. Ned Ducker, of Spearwood, found the ukulele after Corporal Smith was taken prisoner and recently handed it over to Corporal Smith's parents. (reference)

Federation / Inter War Adapt., Domestic Carpenter

No. 68 (previously was no. 126) Glyde street is a single storey residence constructed in timber framing and weatherboard cladding with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is possibly an example of a Federation period house that has been adapted to reflect an Inter-War Bungalow. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and part width return hipped roof verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. Part of the verandah has been enclosed with timber panels. The frontage features a centrally located front door hopper light flanked by picture and double hung sash windows.

1946 Electric Shock. Wool Scourer in Hospital. Suffering from electric shock, Eric Albert McCallum (28), wool scourer, of 68 Glyde-street, East Fremantle, was admitted to the community ward of the Fremantle Hospital yesterday afternoon for observation. McCallum was operating a degreasing machine at the meat export works at Robbs Jetty, South Fremantle, about 4 p.m. when the power plug pulled out of its socket. He switched the current off and picked up the cable leading to the machine. There was a lot of water in the vicinity at the time, and McCallum received a shock which spun him round and threw him to the floor in a dazed condition. His workmates telephoned for an ambulance, which took him to the hospital. His condition is not regarded as serious. (reference)

No 69 Glyde Street is a single storey residence constructed in brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a fine example of a Federation Bungalow style house. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The façade features a full width bullnose roofed verandah supported on turned timber posts over a timber floor.

No. 72 (previously was no. 134) Glyde street is a single storey residence constructed in rendered brick with a hipped gable corrugated iron roof. It is an example of a Federation period house that has been adapted in both the Post World-War II era and 21st Century. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return hipped roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on Tuscan columns set over a masonry balustrade. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The openings have rendered quoins.

No. 73 (previously was no. 129) Glyde street is a two storey residence constructed in brick with a gabled corrugated iron roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by double hung sash windows. The door has a sidelight to one side. The front façade features a full width skillion roofed verandah supported on timber posts. The roof has been re-pitched to allow additional floor space to be built within the roof space. A pair of French doors and a small balcony overlooks the street.

1922 Perth Prattle Pars. Mrs. Archibald Harper, late of South Fremantle, who returned by the Karoola after eight months' sojourn in South Australia, is now staying at her son's residence, 129 Glyde-street, East Fremantle. (reference)

1930 Two-Up Raid. Thirty Men in House—Details of a police raid on a two-up school at a house at 129 Glyde-street, East Fremantle, last Friday night, were given in the Fremantle Police Court this morning, when thirty-one men were charged with having been found in a common gaming house. P.C.C. Herrick said that with P.C.C. Mitchell and Detective Nisbet he went to the rear of the premises about 10.30 p.m. Witness burst the door open. The house was in total darkness, but with the aid of torches men were found hiding in different parts of the house. The floor of one room was covered by bags and a carpet, and a blanket was affixed over the window. An electric cell and batteries were found in the room and wires from the batteries were traced through the window, outside the premises onto the verandah. There was no electric meter on the house, and the wires had been illegally connected. The accused were brought into the room individually and questioned as to why they were on the premises. Some of the men admitted they were playing two-up. Others gave various reasons: one man said he was there for a Bible Class meeting… (reference)

1930 Two-Up School Raided. Arising from a raid on a two-up school at Glyde-street, East Fremantle, on July 4, 31 men appeared in the Fremantle Police Court yesterday morning to answer charges of having taken part in an unlawful game. The accused were Albert Patterson, Geo. Rochford, Basil Plummer, Stanley Hope, Percival Reading, John Houlahan, Chas. James Woods, John Barrett, Henry Bolton, Albert Hodd, James Munsie, William Rogers. Thomas Horrigan, Thomas Holding, Stanley Fisher, Jack Malloch, Lewis Bock, William Brenton, Reginald Hocking, Eric Harley, Robert Young, Thomas Rice, Edgar Olsen, Samuel Pigeon, Frances Murphy, Charles Cox, James Olsen, Alexander Hicks, Thomas Ephriam Frayzier, Percy West and an aboriginal called "Charlie."  Read the full account of the raid... 1930 Two-Up In House. Occupier Fined. A sequel to the police raid on a two-up school being conducted in a house at 129 Glyde-street, East Fremantle, on July 4, was heard in the Fremantle Police Court this morning. Thomas Eric Rice was charged before Mr. H. J. Craig, R.M., with having permitted the house to be used for gaming. Mr. W. E. Slattery appeared for the defendant and pleaded guilty. He said this was Rice's first offence. Sergeant Tuohy, prosecuting, stated that defendant had rented the house from a Fremantle land agent. The magistrate imposed a fine of £9 with 12s 6d costs. 1934 Funeral. The funeral of the late Mrs. Sarah Bennett, wife of Mr. Charles Bennett, of 129 Glyde-street, East Fremantle, took place in the Fremantle Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The late Mrs. Bennett was born at Leicester, England, and had resided in Fremantle for the past 15 years. She was of quiet disposition and particularly devoted to her home and family. To remove match marks from a painted kitchen wall rub first with a piece of cut lemon and then with a clean cloth dipped in whiting. Finally wash the surface with warm soap and water, and wipe with a clean cloth. (reference)

Always keep a slate hanging at some handy spot in the kitchen, and on this jot down all the stores as you run out of them; then, when the shopping time comes, you do not have to open all the tins and jars in the larder before starting on your errands. 1915 Honorable Mention. Economy in Bread-making. Now flour is dearer, use rice instead of so much flour. Boil 2lb. of whole rice until tender in enough water to cover. Strain off the water and mix while warm into 3lb.of flour; add 1oz. Of yeast and set to rise. Knead and make into loaves, and bake to a golden brown. The bread will be lighter and cost less. Mrs. H. 1925 Conspicuous Bravery. Royal Humane Society Awards. The Commissioner of Police has been notified that the Royal Humane Society of Australia has decided to recognise the following acts of conspicuous bravery performed in Western Australia during the past 12 months: Robert Watson, of Beaconsfield, for the rescue from drowning of John McSkimming, at North Fremantle on June 26, 1924—bronze medal. 1925 A bronze medal was awarded to Robert Watson (41). of Beaconsfield, who, on a dark, stormy night in June, dived from the railway bridge at North Fremantle into the river, a distance of 21ft. in an attempt to save John McSkimming from drowning. McSkimming had been working on the bridge and had fallen through, striking his head on a beam in his descent. Although handicapped by a racing tide, Watson held McSkimming above water until help arrived… (reference)
