Federation / Gothic Influences

No. 47 (previously was no. 89) Glyde street is one of a pair of residences constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a good example of a Federation Bungalow style duplex half house. Unlike its neighbour at No 45 Glyde Street there is no infill to the verandah. The original front door and hopper light and flanking window have been retained. The facade features a full width bullnose roofed verandah supported between flanking parapet walls.

The facade features a full-width skillion roof verandah supported on timber posts.

No 47 Clayton Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Porch style. The place sits on a corner lot and addresses both Clayton Street and Pier Street. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a hip roofed porch. The porch is supported on Tuscan columns set on rendered piers. A rendered balustrade spans between the piers. The half- timbered gable bay features a set of casement windows. There is a central door flanked by a set of casement windows. The place sits on limestone foundations. Lower walls are face brick and the upper walls are rendered.

No. 47 (previously was no. 115) Duke Street is a single-storey cottage of timber framed and jarrah weatherboard construction. The place has a hipped ‘M’ format corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style.

The place is consistent with the pattern of development in Plympton and plays an important role in the pattern of development of a working class suburb.

1943 Warrant Officer Henry Clarence Herbert, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Herbert, 47 Duke Street, East Fremantle, who has been awarded the D.F.C., is a Mosquito bomber pilot, and served in Malta during the blitz months. (reference)

1943 Mosquito Pilot. Twenty-five-year-old W/O Henry Clarence Herbert, second son of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Herbert of 47 Duke Street, East Fremantle, is a Mosquito bomber pilot operating from England. Before joining the R.A.A.F. in May 1940 he was a clerk in the employ of the Agricultural Department, Perth, and a prominent cyclist. A member of Fremantle Cycling Club, he specialised in motor paced events and holds an important State record. He covered a measured mile behind a motor cycle from a flying start to record a State record rate of 76 m.p.h. He has served in Malta and since returning to England has been allocated to Mosquito bombers. His sister said today that a telegram announcing the immediate award of the D.F.C. was received last Thursday. An elder brother Claude is training as an observer in the R.A.A.F. Herbert's father is an employee of the Water Supply Department, Fremantle. (reference)

Late Inter-War Bungalow Porch House

No. 47 Fortescue Street is a single-storey house constructed in timber framing and fibrous cement cladding, with a hipped and gabled, tiled roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Porch style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central gabled-roof entry porch, supported on Tuscan columns. There is a central door, to which shutters have been added, flanked by casement windows. The roofscape features a brick chimney.
The place retains its basic form and details, however, there are additions to the rear. The lot has been subdivided with a residence built at the rear (this house addresses Fletcher Street). The place is consistent with the building pattern in the Precinct and it plays an important role in the pattern of development of a middle-class suburb.

Early Federation, Cottage w Georgian Influences

No. 47 (previously was no. 107) Sewell street is a single story cottage constructed in rendered masonry with a hopped corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return skillion roofed verandah. There is a central door flanked by double hung sash windows. The house is set deep in the lot. The houses in the immediate context which are set close to the front lot boundary.

HISTORY

1933 Bogus Bus Tickets. Commercial Travellers Lapse. Although Reginald Stuart Pepworth (39), a commercial traveller, pleaded guilty to a charge of false pretences in the Fremantle Police Court yesterday Mr. H. J. Craig did not record a conviction. The charge was that accused obtained a journey on a charabanc of the South Suburban Bus Company by falsely pretending that a document purporting to be a return ticket was made for and issued by the company. A further charge of having uttered a false document purporting to be a return ticket was withdrawn.Detective-Sergeant Lewis said that accused was an employee of a Fremantle printing works, which recently supplied the bus company with 20,000 tickets. The tickets were made up in sheets of 12, afterwards being guillotined into single tickets. Certain of the sheets were printed with duplicate numbers and were placed on the office file as 'spoils.' References from prominent citizens, including a former Attorney-General (Mr. H. Parker), Mr. E. H. Gray, MLC, the Town Clerk of. East Fremantle (Mr. H. H. Parker) and the managing director of the firm by which accused was employed, were read in court... (reference)

Inter-War Bungalow w Federation Influences

No 47 Oakover Street is a single storey house and shop constructed in rendered brick. The shop is classically derived with face brick and rendered walls, rendered parapets and a skillion corrugated iron roof. The house is in the Inter-War Bungalow style with rendered walls and a hipped tiled roof.
The shop is located on the south east lot boundary. It features a canopy that follows the line of the parapet. There is a corner entry flanked by display windows. The parapet is divided by pilasters and articulated with recessed panels.
The residence wraps around the corner shop. The Oakover Street elevation is set back from the street. The Fletcher Street elevation sits on the lot boundary. The front elevation has a full width hip roofed verandah supported on Tuscan columns. There is an offset entry door flanked by sets of casement windows. 

HISTORY

1936 Fremantle House Burgled. Notes and silver to the value of nearly £40 were stolen from the home of Mr. E. J. Kealley, at the corner of Oakover and Fletcher streets, East Fremantle, yesterday. The theft occurred while the house was left unoccupied between 2.45 p.m. and 9.30 p.m., two of the rooms being ransacked. Detective-Sergeant Parker Is making investigations. (reference)
