ARCHITECTURE

Late Victorian / Early Federation , Regency Influences

No. 66 (previously was no. 98) East street is a single storey house constructed in timber framing and rusticated weatherboard with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a rich expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a polygonal bay window in a thrust bay to the north. The front door is setback and there are French doors to the south. The facade features a skillion roofed verandah on timber posts. The verandah follows the plan of the house and extends over full frontage. A particular feature of the eaves is their corbel brackets.

No. 68 (previously was no. 100) East street-’Craignair’ is a single storey house constructed in limestone and rendered brick with a hipped ‘M’ format iron roof. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by windows and sidelights. The facade features a bullnose verandah supported on timber posts with a decorative frieze set over a concrete floor.

1906 A farewell social was tendered to Mrs. Hughan, who has been on a visit to her daughter, Mrs. Coss of 'Craignair', East-street, Fremantle, at the High-street East Wesley Hall on Thursday evening… The Rev. Francis Mason proposed the health of Mr. and Mrs. Coss, and in doing so spoke of their value as workers in the church. Mr. Netherway, in a few appropriate remarks, supported the toast, which wras drunk with musical honors. 'Mrs. Hughan,' proposed by an old friend of the family, Mr. W. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door flanked by windows. There is a gabled roof facing onto the street and hipped roofs over the remainder of the house. The facade features is a full width skillion roofed verandah that extends across the front elevation and is supported on turned timber posts.

No. 76 (previously was no. 112) East street is a single storey house constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped corrugated iron roof. It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The facade features a full width bullnose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with decorative brackets. A vertical baluster pattern balustrade spans between the posts. There is a long timber framed stair leading down to the garden. All openings have brick quoins.

It is a simple expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a skillion roofed front verandah. Entry doors are equally offset from the party wall. The doors are flanked by windows. Tapered masonry walls extend from the duplex to the boundary. These walls enclose the front yard and divide the dwellings.

1930 Tale. A Cheering Prospect.The writer of an old book of travel, relating his experiences on being shipwrecked on an unknown shore, concludes: "After having walked eleven hours without having traced the print of a human foot, to my great comfort and delight I saw a man hanging upon a gibbet. Alexander Dow Cowan (1890 - 1929) (Neptune Oil) A brilliant businessman A.D.Cowan could see the potential to build the Neptune Oil Company in Fremantle. He joined the company at 18 and was Manager by the age of 22. He oversaw the growth of the business despite a massive fire which destroyed its yards in 1928. Sadly this was also the year he died- a life cut short at 38 years old. Alex, at 21, married Ethel Maria Pettersen in 1911, and fathered two sons Alexander ‘Lex” Dow Cowan (1912-1965) and John ‘’Jack’’ (1915) From 1918-1925 they lived at 116 East St. before moving to 7 Irwin St. (Read more of his story in Notable People)

Federation, Skillion Domestic Carpenter

No. 82 (previously was no. 118) East street is a house constructed in timber framing and jarrah weatherboard cladding with skillion corrugated iron roofs. It is a complex example of a simple timber residence. There have been several additions over a number of occasions. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with 'picture' windows to the north and a small veranda to the south. The house steps back in numerous layers.

HISTORY

1893 Fatal Building Catastrophe At Fremantle, A Brewery Collapses-Two Men Buried Alive In The Ruins. On Saturday one of the most deplorable building accidents of recent years in this colony occurred at Fremantle...The building under notice is situated on the east bank of the Swan river, about 400 yards from the railway bridge. It was four stories high, with a tower, and had two wings, each two stories. The names of the men employed on the building on Saturday were as follows: G. H. Ibberson and Sydney Gray, carpenters; Edward Mell, bricklayer; Peter Carson and W. Tregawney, plasterers; A. Ball, M. Hall, and J. Rollinson, masons; and J. Carson, S. King, G. Ramsay, A. Westwood, and J. Costigan, labourers. Of these only the two latter were inside the building, and were in fact engaged on the basement in the act of sending up supplies when the building collapsed upon them…In the minor casualties Ramsay had a portion of his nether lip torn off, a gash on his forehead, and an arm severely bruised. 1932 A Big Haul In Closed Waters, William Woods and Roy Black were fishing on the south side of Preston Point Bank East Fremantle, when Fisheries Inspector Brown  captured them with their boat, net and 800 mullet. The pair were summoned for fishing in closed waters and in court on Monday the inspector said that he sent the fish to the Salvation Army Home. Woods said that he had been out of work for two years and went fishing to earn a few shillings… (reference)
