Federation, Skillion Domestic Carpenter

No. 82 (previously was no. 118) East street is a house constructed in timber framing and jarrah weatherboard cladding with skillion corrugated iron roofs. It is a complex example of a simple timber residence. There have been several additions over a number of occasions. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with 'picture' windows to the north and a small veranda to the south. The house steps back in numerous layers.

HISTORY

1893 Fatal Building Catastrophe At Fremantle, A Brewery Collapses-Two Men Buried Alive In The Ruins. On Saturday one of the most deplorable building accidents of recent years in this colony occurred at Fremantle...The building under notice is situated on the east bank of the Swan river, about 400 yards from the railway bridge. It was four stories high, with a tower, and had two wings, each two stories. The names of the men employed on the building on Saturday were as follows: G. H. Ibberson and Sydney Gray, carpenters; Edward Mell, bricklayer; Peter Carson and W. Tregawney, plasterers; A. Ball, M. Hall, and J. Rollinson, masons; and J. Carson, S. King, G. Ramsay, A. Westwood, and J. Costigan, labourers. Of these only the two latter were inside the building, and were in fact engaged on the basement in the act of sending up supplies when the building collapsed upon them…In the minor casualties Ramsay had a portion of his nether lip torn off, a gash on his forehead, and an arm severely bruised. 1924 Fremantle court. Obscene Language.—Roy Black was fined £2 on the charge of having, on the previous day used obscene language in East Fremantle. (reference)
1929 McCorkindale. On July 7, 1929, at Palmyra, George B. McCorkindale, late of Bruce Rock and formerly of Fremantle, and dearly beloved husband of Helen, and fond father of Duncan, Bessie, Agnes, Malcolm, and Nellie; aged 46 years. At rest. (reference)
1932 Death on July 15, Martha Brennan...loving mother of Mary (Mrs. G. Ramsay, Fremantle); aged 65 years (reference)
1932 A Big Haul In Closed Waters, William Woods and Roy Black were fishing on the south side of Preston Point Bank East Fremantle, when Fisheries Inspector Brown captured them with their boat, net and 800 mullet. The pair were summoned for fishing in closed waters and in court on Monday the inspector said that he sent the fish to the Salvation Army Home. Woods said that he had been out of work for two years and went fishing to earn a few shillings… (reference)
1943 The engagement is announced of Helen Law, youngest daughter of the late Mr. G. B. McCorkindale, and of Mrs. H. McCorkindale, Bruce Rock, to Ronald William only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Beresford, of Bassendean. (reference)
