(Late) Inter-War Porch house Bungalow w Arts & Crafts Influence

No 11 Walter Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is an expression of the Inter-War Porch style with some modifications. There is a later addition to the north in the same style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a skillion roofed porch. The porch is supported on Tuscan columns sheltering a pair of entrance doors. The gable bay is rendered with a face brick band in the window zone. There is a herringbone brick pattern in an arch above the window. To the north of the porch is an addition in a near marching style. The place sits on limestone foundations.

HISTORY

1950 Betting Place Raided. 30 Men Before Court. State revenue benefited to the extent of £141 yesterday as a result of a raid by plainclothes-constables on a gaming house being used for betting at South-terrace, Fremantle, on Saturday. It was the first raid of its kind at Fremantle for some years. The Fremantle Police Court was crowded when charges against 30 men arrested in the raid were dealt with by Mr. K. J. Dougall, S.M. All the men pleaded guilty...Walter Corish (48), clerk, of Walter-street, East Fremantle...fined £20 with 2/6 costs. Charged with having obstructed Plainclothes-Constables… (reference)
