ARCHITECTURE

Inter-War / Bungalow w/ Federation Influences

No 66 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in tuck pointed brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a very fine expression of the Federation Queen Anne style. The front facade is symmetrically planned with a full width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with a curved valance board. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. The entrance addresses the street and is located under the return verandah to the south. There are spayed bay windows at the verandah ends. The bay windows feature casement lights. Gabled roofs sit over these. The roofscape features rendered chimneys and finials.

The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a full width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts on masonry piers. A curved valance board and balustrade span between posts. The entrance is on the north elevation under the return verandah. There are single pane double hung sash windows across the front facade. The roofscape features rendered chimneys.

Rodriguez) in the Fremantle Courthouse yesterday at an Inquest into the death of Agnes Russell Strathearn (70) single…She died from injuries received when she was knocked over by a utility driven by Arthur Steven Johns of Battle-street, Mosman Park, in Stirling highway Cottesloe, at about 11.30 a.m. on August 4. Evidence was given that the deceased was crossing the road when she was called by a friend. She stopped and turned in the middle of the road and in so doing was struck by the utility. (reference)

No 70 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Arts and Crafts style. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a full width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with post brackets. The entrance is on the south elevation under the return verandah. There are multi-pane windows across the front façade and all quoins are brick. 

HISTORY

1920 Sergeant Trumpeter Victor Edwards, of the original 10th Light Horse Regiment, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs Horace J. G. Edwards, of Cottesloe, has received from the Base Records, Melbourne, word of his having been mentioned in despatches by the commander in the field. He has also received two oak leaves as emblems to be worn after four and a half years' active service. (reference)

Victor  H Edwards married Jean Knox in Fremantle in 1922. A son Ross was born in 1923.

1929 Birth on August 20, to Mr. and Mrs. V. H. Edwards, of 70 Dalgety-street, East Fremantle—a daughter. (reference)

1933 Funerals. The funeral of the late Mr. Horace J. Gomez Edwards, Printing Instructor of the Fremantle Prison, and of 22 Keane-street, Peppermint Grove, took place yesterday afternoon in the Presbyterian portion of the Karrakatta Cemetery... Born at Perth, the late Mr. Edwards was 60 years of age, and had always resided in this State. He learnt the printing trade at the City Press, Perth, later joining the Government Printing Office. After being there eight years he was transferred as Printing Instructor to the Fremantle Prison, where he had been up to the time of his death, a period of 23 years. He was the second son of the late Mrs. Margaret Glanville (formerly Dore), a well-known pioneer of this State. Joining the Volunteer Artillery he was Sergeant in No. 1 Battery and in 1897 was presented to Queen Victoria at her Diamond Jubilee. The deceased was one of the oldest and best known oarsmen of the State, commencing his rowing career in 1890 and winning his first race in 1891, the Swan River Trial Fours. He held the title of champion sculler of this State for 1900, 1901, 1903 and 1904. He took part in interstate racing in eights and sculls, and was the coach in 1910 and 1911 and joint coach in 1914, and has been honorary coach of the Fremantle Rowing Club for the past 15 years. In 1904 he won the only race that was ever rowed at Guildford, winning the Padbury Diamond Sculls. His loss will be keenly felt, especially in rowing circles, as his genial personality had won him many friends. The late Mr. Edwards is survived by a widow, two daughters and six sons. The chief mourners were Mrs. Edwards (widow), Mesdames S. Weatherall and S. Henderson (daughters), Victor, Herbert, Glanville, Edmund, Gomez and Louis (sons)... (reference)

1939 Jammed By Truck. Youth's Fatal Injuries. From internal injuries received when he was jammed between the wall of a lane and the side of a motor truck in Fremantle yesterday, a youth died shortly after admission to the Fremantle Hospital. Bungalow Porch House w / Arts & Crafts Influences

No 73 Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gabled decramastic tiled roof. It is a fair expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a prominent gable bay and part width skillion roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on masonry columns. The gable bay features a bay window with double hung sash windows and an arched porch. The porch was later extended south. There is a central door flanked by casement windows.

1936 Truck’s Plunge Down Bank. Driver Killed Instantly. A verdict of accidental death was returned by the Acting-Coroner at an inquest held at the Fremantle Courthouse yesterday concerning the death of Rupert Alexander Pink (35). Pink was the driver of a motor truck which plunged down an embankment and overturned in the Fremantle road,  Palmyra... The truck had overturned on the northern side of the road, and was lying at the bottom of a nine-foot embankment...Thomas W. Bowles, a rabbit trapper, of Preston Point-road, Bicton, said that he was travelling with Pink to Fremantle from Beverley. Deceased had slept at his camp the previous night at Beverley. On the day of the accident they picked up rabbits at various points along the road, and at York loaded 300 pairs. Deceased had several drinks along the road, but was not affected by them... No 74A Dalgety Street is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a gabled thrust bay and part width hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on twin posts resting on masonry piers. Part of the verandah has been enclosed in brickwork. The half-timbered, gable bay features a set of casement windows under a sunhood. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by casement windows. The roofscape features a rendered chimney. A render band runs across the facade.

The entry door has been relocated to the addition at the rear. The roofscape features rendered chimneys.
