ARCHITECTURE

No 200 Canning Highway-’Templetonia’ is a single storey house constructed in limestone and brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a very fine expression of the Federation Cottage Ornée style. It is asymmetrically composed with a gabled thrust bay and a part width return bull-nose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with brackets and a lacy carved frieze. The gable bay features a curved head window with double hung sash windows, sidelights and a fanlight. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. Walls are random coursed limestone with brick quoins. The roofscape features tall render capped chimneys.

No 202 Canning Highway ‘Fairfield’ is a single storey house constructed in limestone, brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust gable bay and a full width return bullnose roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts with brackets. A vertical timber balustrade spans between the posts. A broad set of steps descends to the garden from the verandah. The gable bay features a bay window with double hung sash windows. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The roofscape features tall render capped chimneys.

HISTORY

Reginald D’Arcy Streat was born Percy Reginald Streat in Victoria in 1880. his family came to Kalgoorlie in the early 1900s and in 1902 Reg married Emily Lloyd in Subiaco . They had three children Isabella, Patricia and Lyle.

No 205 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in tuck pointed brick and rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is good expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation was symmetrically planned with a full width hip roofed verandah. There is an addition to the west resulting in an asymmetrical elevation. The verandah is set on stop chamfered timber posts with brackets. There is a central door flanked by casement windows. The roofscape features a rendered chimney. Render bands run across the facade.

"This property is very unique as it had been built purposefully as a general practice surgery and Dr’s residence. In its 100 yr old history only 4 medical practitioners have worked and lived here. Dr. Stubbe built the dwelling and was the local medical practitioner for 10 years here. He was followed by Dr. Uther Baker (2 of his 4 children were born here). Dr Baker practiced here for 30 years. He retired from being a general Practitioner and worked for the Red Cross. He was 102 years old when he died. Then Dr. Lindsay Redgrave a surgeon at Fremantle Hospital, worked in this practice as a GP from 1961 to 1973, where he died on the job. He was also the Town’s sporting Dr and medical officer. Dr. David Nelson commenced working and living here in 1974 and continues to practice here as a General Practitioner. (2 of his 3 sons were born here)." (Correspondence with Suzi Nelson 2019)

1961-1973 Dr Lindsay Redgrave married his second wife, a theatre nurse, Leah. He was a surgeon at Fremantle Hospital and worked in this practice as a GP from 1961 to 1973 where he died on the job. No 211 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in rendered brick with a hipped and gable tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style. The front elevation is asymmetrically planned with a thrust gable bay and a part width return hipped roofed verandah. The verandah is set on turned timber posts supported on rendered piers. A rendered balustrade spans between the piers. The thrust bay features a set of casement windows under an awning. The front door is located on the west elevation under the return verandah. The place has sets of casement windows including a corner window suite. The roofscape features a pair of rendered chimneys.

ARCHITECTURE

No 217-219 Canning Highway is a two storey Masonic lodge constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gabled tiled roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Free Classical style. The front entrance is a stylised temple with a plinth, pairs of fluted pilasters, an entablature with metopes and then a tympanum, with the Masonic symbol of set square and dividers in bas-relief. The hall is much simpler with brick walls and high level windows for each floor level. There are additions to the rear. The original landscape has been replaced with a car park. The place is consistent with the building pattern in the Precinct. The place plays an important role in the pattern of development of a middle class suburb.

HISTORY

1933 New Masonic Hall. Construction at East Fremantle. Among the building, activities at East Fremantle is a substantial Masonic hall which is being erected on a site in the Woodside Estate, at the corner of Canning-road and Dalgety-street. The building will probably be completed early in November, and occupied before the end of the year. (reference

1933 New Masonic Temple. Opened at East Fremantle. The East Fremantle Masonic Hall was opened last Monday night with the meeting of the Loyal Westralian Lodge. The attendance, which was estimated at more than 250, was one of the largest to witness a Masonic ceremonial at Fremantle. Twenty-nine Grand Lodge officers and representatives of the District Grand Lodge of Scotland were present, and some brethren had come long distances to attend the ceremony. During the evening, at the request of the Master of the Lodge (Mr. G. Sinclair), the Grand Master of the Western Australian Constitution of Freemasons (Mr. F. A. McMullen) set in position an inscribed stone of Mundaring granite to mark the completion of the edifice. (reference)

‘Tiffie’ Cooke was a prominent and prolific musician, dancer and dance teacher in East Fremantle in the 1920s and 1930s. ( see her story in the Notable People section). In 1921 she went to train at the Melbourne Royal Academy of Dancing- After returning to Perth, she opened her first dance school in the Victoria Hall in Fremantle, teaching ‘up-to-date’ dancing. (reference) Concerts by Tiffie’s dancing girls were then given virtually twice a year until 1941. (reference) Tiffie’s Dance Group performances also featured the singing and dancing talents of her good friend Miss Doris Deary (1900-1983). By 1928 Tiffie and Doris were well known in Perth and Fremantle performing arts circles. Tiffies’ brother Earle and their mother, Elsie, were also involved in the concert performances. The recently renovated and extended Baptist Church on Canning Highway, East Fremantle, opposite the end of Walter Street. The Foundation Stone was laid by G. B. W. Filmer Esq., J.P., on October 30th, 1920. The Reverend F. Shiner was Pastor at that time. (reference)

1928 Baptist Fete. A Christmas Fete held in East Fremantle Baptist Church on December 14th, proved a very happy gathering. Mrs. G. W. Simpson performed the opening ceremony, an in a jolly little speech put everybody in the proper mood for doing full justice to the fete. (reference)

The place is located on a corner lot that addresses both Canning Highway and Stratford Street. It is a fine expression of the Federation Bungalow style with later modifications. It is asymmetrically composed with a gabled thrust bay to the west side of the house and then a part width return hip roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on timber posts. Sections of the verandah have been enclosed with timber framing and fibro sheeting. The entry door is located on the south face of the thrust bay under the verandah. A wide set of stairs goes from the verandah to the street. The roofscape features a tall painted chimney.

No 240 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped tiled roof. It is an expression of the Federation Bungalow style. It is asymmetrically composed with a full width return broken back roofed verandah. The verandah is supported on masonry piers. A painted brick balustrade spans between the posts. The masonry elements have replaced the original timber detailing. There is a central door and hopper light flanked by sidelights and double hung sash windows. The original walls remain tuck-pointed brick. A broad set of steps lead from the verandah to the front yard. The roofscape features a tall brick chimney.

In the Criminal Court Yesterday, before Mr. Justice Burnevide, William Jackson Sumpton was charged with the manslaughter of Leah Eunice Saunders (20), whose death occurred at Woodside Hospital on January 26 following an accident in which she was struck by a motorcycle driven by the accused along Canning-road East Fremantle… The motor cycle swerved to the right and struck Miss Saunders, who was carried along some distance in front of the machine to a spot almost opposite the gate of Albert Mattingley's residence. It is asymmetrically composed with a thrust bay and a flat roofed porch. The porch is supported on rendered masonry columns. A masonry balustrade spans between the columns. The thrust bay features a set of casement windows under a sunhood. There is a central door flanked by sets of casement windows. Lower walls are face brick and the upper walls are rendered. The roofscape features a tall brick chimney and finials.

1936 Witnesses Wanted. The traffic police at Fremantle are trying to get in touch with witnesses of an accident at the Victoria Quay end of the James-street bridge on May 21, when Fader Miller (about 40), of McKimmie street, Palmyra, received spinal injuries. Miller was riding his motor cycle over the bridge, following three cyclists and a motor car driven by Ronald M. Fisher, of Canning-road, East Fremantle. When Fisher had crossed the bridge and was turning to his right on to the wharf, Miller swerved to avoid a collision with the car, and in doing so skidded and was thrown from his cycle. 1930 Miss Maisie Campbell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Campbell, Canning-road, East Fremantle, was the recipient of an untold number of congratulations last Friday when it was officially announced that she had gained the distinction of becoming Western Australia’s third woman dentist. Miss Campbell, Dip., D.S., was a student at the Perth Dental Hospital, and her work there was of such a nature that she gained unstinted praise from the leaders of the profession. It is understood that after Miss Campbell enjoys a quiet rest in the country that she will practise in East Fremantle. (reference)

No 250 Canning Highway is a single storey house constructed in brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gabled corrugated iron roof. It is a fine expression of the Inter-War Bungalow style. The place is located on a corner lot that addresses both Canning Highway and Clayton Street. The front elevation is symmetrically planned with a central flat roofed porch flanked by gable bays. The porch is supported on masonry piers. A masonry balustrade with rendered and decorative brick motifs spans between the piers. Stairs from the porch to the garden flank both sides of the porch. The half timbered, gable bays feature flat roofed sunhoods over sets of casement windows. There is a central door under the porch. Lower walls are face brick and the upper walls rendered. The roofscape features render capped chimneys but the original tiled roof has been replaced with corrugated iron sheeting.

PHYSICAL SETTING

The residence is situated on a sloping site with a low rendered wall and close boarded timber fence on the lot boundary.

Between 7.15 and 11.30 p.m. on Saturday several articles of jewellery and £1 in cash were stolen from the residence of William Charles Angwin, of 249 Canning-highway, East Fremantle. Jewellery was also stolen from the house next door—the residence of Justus Angwin, of 251 Canning-highway—between the same times. Inquiries are being made by the Fremantle detective office. 1941 Fremantle Notes New Labor Councilor. At the close of nominations for the annual municipal elections on Saturday last, East Fremantle...Owing to the retiring councillor, Mr. C. H. Smith, not seeking re-election, Mr. Justus Angwin, the endorsed Labor candidate, was declared elected as representative of the West Ward by the returning officer, Cr. E. Lee. Mr. J. Angwin is known to Fremantle Labor circles as the cofounder of the original Fremantle Young Men's Labor League and as a member of the East Fremantle A.L.P. branch, of which he was foundation President. No 256 Canning Highway is a single-storey shop and attached house constructed in limestone, painted brick and rendered brick with a hipped and gable corrugated iron roof. It is a representative expression of the Inter-War Free Classical style. The place sits on a corner lot that addresses both Canning Highway and Petra Street. The styling of the shop is stripped back to the essential pier and panel parapet treatments. There is a corner entry and this is flanked by two windows on Canning Highway and a single window on Petra Street. A hip roofed awning follows the line of the building. The awning is supported on timber posts. Walls are rendered. The house can be entered through the shop or from the rear. The place sits on limestone foundations. Lower walls are painted brick and the upper walls are rendered. The windows are sets of casements with iron grilles.

Stirling Bridge / Landscaping

ARCHITECTURE

The bridge has a precast segmental twin prestressed concrete box super structure supported on concrete filled driven steel piles. The bridge is 65m long, costing $2.5 million and was completed in 1974.

This elegant bridge forms part of the Fremantle eastern bypass and is a beautiful landmark nestling unobtrusively in the environment.
